Gender composition of spasticity-related clinical practice guideline authorship positions.

BACKGROUND: The authors of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are considered topic experts and specialists. Studies to date have disproportionately found that women are underrepresented in CPG authorship, but no studies have investigated CPGs on spasticity published in the recent literature. OBJECTIVE: To determine the gender composition of author positions on spasticity-related CPGs published from 2014 to 2023. DESIGN: Retrospective review of literature. SETTING: Systematic literature search using PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL databases for spasticity-related CPGs available in English and pu

Gender Authorship Trends Among Craniofacial Publications: A 20-Year Analysis.

This study aims to identify gender disparities within the subspecialty of craniofacial surgery as women surgeons remain underrepresented in academia and leadership, arenas heavily dictated by research productivity. All craniofacial articles published in 3 major research journals from 2000 to 2020 were reviewed and evaluated in 5-year increments. Information regarding author gender, authorship distribution, geographic origin, and publication type was collected. ANOVA, χ2, and logistic regression modeling were used for analysis. In total, there were 3684 articles with 15 206 total authors-3128 (

When Form Intersects with Automation: Ethics, Authorship, and the Future of IMRAD.

Academic dishonesty predates artificial intelligence; fabrication, plagiarism, and ghost authorship largely reflect distorted "publish or perish" incentives rather than technological novelty. We argue that using AI to assist with drafting, linguistic editing, and organizing text, tables, and figures in biology is ethically comparable to established editorial support services, provided its use is transparently disclosed and full accountability remains with human authors. At the same time, exponential growth in publication output is intensifying the peer-review bottleneck and challenging the sus

Gender Authorship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology: Trends and Persistent Seniority Gaps.

Publication leadership shapes academic advancement, yet gender inequity persists in gastroenterology and hepatology. We quantified women's first and last authorship across selected journals. We analyzed PubMed-indexed publications from 14 prespecified gastroenterology and hepatology journals from 2013 through 2025. First and last individual authors were used as proxies for lead and senior authorship. Gender was inferred from first names using Genderize.io with manual adjudication of missing or ambiguous cases. We summarized authorship by journal and year and evaluated first-to-last author gend

Writing as formation: supervising AI use in early-career medical authorship.

International editorial bodies require authors to disclose the use of large language models in manuscript preparation and to retain accountability for the final text. This guidance is appropriate for formed researchers but does not address what trainees should or should not do during the formative phase of a doctoral thesis, a residency case report, or a first-authored paper. I propose a supervisor-led framework for AI use in medical doctoral and early-career scientific writing, grounded in an argument about professional formation rather than compliance alone; the scope is the writing and inte

Co-authorship network analysis in health research: method and potential use.

Scientific collaboration networks are a hallmark of contemporary academic research. Researchers are no longer independent players, but members of teams that bring together complementary skills and multidisciplinary approaches around common goals. Social network analysis and co-authorship networks are increasingly used as powerful tools to assess collaboration trends and to identify leading scientists and organizations. The analysis reveals the social structure of the networks by identifying actors and their connections. This article reviews the method and potential applications of co-authorshi

Credit for Truly Novel Ideas? A Critical Approach to the Intellectual Authorship in Surgery.

The formation of new ideas and techniques in medicine and surgery is crucial to bettering the medical field and the quality of medical care. The transmission of these new ideas is a source of pride and recognition for physicians who devote their lives to patient care. The quality and integrity of the medical literature that results from seminal medical ideas are an essential but unregulated field. From time to time, there are discussions in the medical literature about the authorship of an idea/strategy/technique. In this digital era, where communication works at an unmeasurable speed, the aut

Grammar and lexicon in facilitated communication: a linguistic authorship analysis of a Finnish case.

This case study adds a new dimension to the discourse on the authorship issue in facilitated communication. The linguistic structure produced by a young Finnish man with severe cerebral palsy was examined. Data are based on transcripts he produced from 1993 until 1996 after facilitated communication had been introduced to him. In the data analysis, as explicit criteria for his idiosyncrasies, we used patterns typical of children acquiring Finnish as their first language and those found in normal slips of the tongue, acquired aphasia, and specific language impairment. Based on the analysis (i.e

Gender Representation in Authorship of Original Research Publications in Medical Student Journals.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing proportion of female medical students globally, women remain a minority of authors in mainstream medical journals. Whether similar differences in gender representation extend to medical student journals (MSJs) remains unknown. In this bibliometric analysis, we explored female author representation in student-authored original research articles published in MSJs over the past decade. METHODS: Using a standardized search strategy, we identified English-language MSJs that are currently active and have been continuously operating for ≥10 years. We used a hierarc

Illness experience and authorship of life in a "transplanted person" with Lupus: A DIPEx perspective.

We present a case of a 37 yo woman who underwent a heart and kidney transplantation due to Lupus and has had a 10-year follow-up without significant complications or Lupus recurrence. Her case was part of a DIPEx International project with heart transplant patients, and we discussed, from a DIPEx perspective, the importance of narrative and illness experience to her recovery. She made a video of various stages of her illness period and was able to regain her sense of life purpose through the narrative resources she developed in her rehabilitation period. We also consider the concept of authors

Evidence of Authorship on Messages in Facilitated Communication: A Case Report Using Accelerometry.

Facilitated communication (FC) belongs to augmentative and alternative methods of communication. Currently, FC is very rarely and unofficially used with people suffering from verbal/communicative disorders or neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual deficiency or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). FC consists of physical support exerted by a facilitator at the hand/wrist/forearm/elbow of a patient/participant, aimed at helping him/her to point at pictures/words, and sometimes to type letters/words on a keyboard. Given most of (but not all) validation studies using control procedures fail

Dataset of authorship attribution from short-text multi topic representative in Bahasa Indonesia.

Authorship attribution plays an important role in various applications, including digital forensics, Yauthorship verification, and the analysis of online textual content. While extensive benchmark datasets are available for high-resource languages such as English, publicly accessible datasets for authorship attribution in the Indonesian language remain limited. This limitation restricts systematic experimentation and comparative evaluation across different authorship attribution approaches in bahasa Indonesia. To address this gap, this data article introduces an Indonesian authorship attributi

Liberatory alignment: Integrating agency and self-authorship to foster healing from racial trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Racial trauma poses significant and underaddressed challenges within existing health care systems, where current frameworks often fail to account for the political dimensions of healing or the ways that dominant models can reproduce the dynamics of power they seek to address. This article introduces the liberatory alignment framework, which integrates sociocultural understandings of agency with self-authorship theory to support healing from racial trauma. METHOD: The liberatory alignment framework integrates sociocultural understandings of agency with self-authorship theory, drawin

Emoji fingerprints: topic-independent authorship verification using 20 novel emoji-based stylometric features.

Authorship verification in social media text is a growing challenge in digital forensics, yet existing stylometric approaches rely on textual features that degrade substantially when reference and questioned texts originate from different communicative contexts. This study investigates whether emoji usage patterns-a pervasive but underexplored dimension of digital communication-can serve as viable stylometric markers for forensic authorship verification. We propose 20 novel emoji-based features organized into six thematic categories and evaluate them on a large-scale dataset of 4697 Reddit aut

Authorship and citation inequities in high-impact emergency medicine journals: a bibliometric analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency medicine (EM) is a global discipline; however, marked inequities in authorship representation persist. Disparities between high-income countries (HICs) and lower-and middle-income countries (LMICs) may influence research visibility, access to funding, and scholarly impact. Using recent data, we examined authorship leadership, funding, and citation patterns across national income groups in high-impact EM journals. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of articles published between 2020 and 2024 in the 20 highest-ranked EM journals according to Go

"Protein Shake Brain" and the Alpha Function: Restoring Authorship in Engineered Epistemic Ecologies.

In today’s engineered epistemic ecologies, a new phenomenological marker we argue is emerging: thoughts that are present but not possessed—fluent formulations that are cognitively available yet not subjectively owned. This paper introduces “Protein Shake Brain” (PSB) as a cultural-psychological diagnosis for the loss of symbolic metabolism through the outsourcing of intellectual labor. Drawing on integrative psychodynamic theory (Bion, Winnicott, Bollas), we trace a psychodynamic cascade—a theoretical diagnostic framework—from AI’s position as a “Subject Supposed to Know” into evasive non-thin

The synthetic position: generative artificial intelligence and the suspension of self-authorship in emerging adulthood.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely treated as an instrumental aid to thought, a faster route to information, drafting, and articulate self-description. This article problematizes that framing and argues that, when enlisted for the intimate work of deciding who to become, conversational artificial intelligence alters the structure of emerging adulthood, not only its content. Working within Dialogical Self Theory, which conceives the self as a society of relatively autonomous I-positions integrated by a promoter position, we propose that a large language model in self-format

Authorship, titles and open access as drivers of citation performance in orthopaedics: a scientometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bibliometric analyses are increasingly used to explore how scientific knowledge is created, disseminated, and perceived. In orthopaedics, research output has expanded rapidly over the past decade, yet the factors determining whether an article achieves wide visibility and scholarly impact remain poorly understood. Beyond the inherent quality of a study, elements such as authorship patterns, title construction, and open access (OA) availability may play an essential role in shaping citation performance. However, evidence in this field is still limited and sometimes contradictory, hi
