Background: There have been previous reports of enhanced sympathoexcitation in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there has been no formal investigation of autonomic dysfunction in ASD. Also, the joint hypermobile form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hE-DS) that maybe overrepresented in ASD and orthostatic related autonomic dysfunction. This study examined the comorbidity of ASD, autonomic dysfunction and hE-DS in two UK autonomic national referral centers. Proven, documented and globally accepted clinical autonomic investigations were used to assess neuro-cardiovascular autonomic function in

Emily is a 10-year-old girl who is in fifth grade. She has known congenital blindness secondary to septo-optic dysplasia with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia and precocious puberty. Emily was referred to a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics clinic for concerns of academic, social, and language challenges.Emily was born at term gestation after an uncomplicated pregnancy. At 4 months of age, she underwent ophthalmologic evaluation because of nystagmus, reduced visual tracking and response to light, and increased startle response to touch. The concept of "acquired autism" refers to the hypothesis that amongst the massive heterogeneity that encompasses autism spectrum disorder (ASD) there may be several phenotypes that are neither syndromic nor innate. Strong and consistent evidence has linked exposure to various pharmacological and infective agents with an elevated risk of a diagnosis of ASD including maternal valproate use, rubella and herpes encephalitis. Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) describes a group of conditions characterised by the body's immune system mounting an attack on healthy brain cells causing brain inflammation. T

Among the core features of ASD, altered sensitivities in all modalities have been accorded increasing importance. Heightened sensitivity to pain and unusual expressions of and reaction to pain have not hitherto been widely recognised as a presenting feature of ASD in general paediatrics. Failure to recognise ASD as a common cause of pain can lead to late diagnosis, inappropriate treatment, distress, and further disability. Two cases are presented which illustrate the late presentation of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger's Syndrome subtype) with chronic unusual pain. Conclusion. Pain in autis

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms is positively correlated with the level of circulating or stored toxic metals, and that excretion of these heavy metals, brought about by the use of pharmaceutical chelating agents, results in improved symptoms.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the potential benefits and adverse effects of pharmaceutical chelating agents (referred to as chelation therapy throughout this review) for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following databases on 6 November 2014: CENTRAL, Ovid ME

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impaired social interactions, language deficits, as well as restrictive or repetitive behaviors. ASD is clinically heterogeneous with a complex etiopathogenesis which may be conceptualized as a dynamic interplay between heterogeneous environmental cues and predisposing genetic factors involving complex epigenetic mechanisms. Inherited and de novo copy number variants provide novel information regarding genes contributing to ASD. Epigenetic marks are stable, yet potentially reversible, chromatin modifications that

Autism spectrum disorders are of high prevalence and have a potentially complex range of presentations within the core impaired domains of social communication, reciprocal social interaction, imaginary thought and restricted and repetitive behaviours. Paediatricians need to recognise the possibility of these conditions among the high-risk populations of children with whom they work. This includes those presenting in the preschool years to child development clinics with delayed acquisition of language or general development delay or those presenting in the school years with coordination, academ

BACKGROUND: Autism is a severe handicapping disorder of early childhood characterized by a distinct pattern of social and communication impairment with rigid ritualistic interests. In about 10-25% of cases, it is associated with known medical conditions. Population-based studies of autism have found that Klinefelter's syndrome (KS), a common chromosome abnormality, is sometimes associated with autism. However, few detailed case descriptions of patients with KS and autism have not been published.
CASE REPORT: In this paper, we describe the occurrence of autistic features in two cases of Klinef

BACKGROUND: Secretin is a gastro-intestinal hormone which has been presented as an effective treatment for autism based on anecdotal evidence.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if intravenous secretin:1. improves the core features of autism (social interaction, communication and behaviour problems); 2. improves the non-core aspects of behaviour or function such as self injurious behaviour;3. improves the quality of life of affected individuals and their carers; 4. has short term and long term effects on outcome; 5. causes harm.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition with limited treatment options that address its full complexity. This review critically evaluates novel therapeutics across five key domains: behavioral and psychosocial interventions, psychopharmacology, digital and AI-driven tools, neuromodulation, and genetic therapies. The broad heterogeneity of ASD complicates clinical research, often obscuring treatment effects and limiting generalizability. Challenges across domains include identifying reliable biomarkers, defining meaningful outcomes, and ensuring equitable

Persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have other psychiatric conditions that warrant treatment. Symptoms may not be easy to discern from rigidity or irritability that are sometimes considered to be constituent parts of ASD. Pathophysiology that involves hyperexcitable neurons and anomalous connectivity may provide justification for using psychopharmacologic agents, although nonmedical strategies may also be effective. Hyperactivity, irritability, and tantrums with or without aggression may be rational targets for psychopharmacological intervention. The best-studied drug class to date

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In our study, we aimed to evaluate inflammation by measuring serum Adenosine deaminase and dipeptidyl peptidase IV levels of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and to determine its relationship with the Childhood Autism Rating Scale.
METHODS: 37 children aged 2-12 years with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and 27 children aged 2-12 years without any psychiatric disease were included in the study. Psychiatric examination and clinical evaluation according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder were performed on

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of July 11, 2016, the reported average incidence of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was 1 in 68 (1.46%) among 8-year-old children born in 2004 and living within the 11 monitoring sites' surveillance areas in the United States of America (USA) in 2012. ASD is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental disorder that is also considered a hidden disability, as, for the most part; there are no apparent morphological differences between children with ASD and typically developing children. ASD is diag

Family accommodation occurs frequently among families of children with OCD and anxiety disorders, with higher levels of accommodation repeatedly associated with greater symptom severity, lower functioning, and poorer treatment outcomes for children. This is the first examination of family accommodation of restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parents of children with ASD (N = 86) completed questionnaires assessing their children's RRBs and parental accommodation of these symptoms. Most participants (80%) reported engaging in accommodation a

In 2018, one in every 59 children was diagnosed in the United States with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a developmental disability, which is a biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child's social interaction and communication skills. ASD includes repetitive patterns and restrictive behaviors, which could last a lifetime. Limited awareness of disease condition, less effective coping strategies, and inadequate guidance lead to increased stress levels among parents of children with ASD. Parents experience peaks and troughs of social, emotional, and financial chall

Communication deficits are a defining feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), manifest during social interactions. Previous studies investigating communicative deficits have largely focused on the perceptual biases, social motivation, cognitive flexibility, or mentalizing abilities of isolated individuals. By embedding autistic individuals in live non-verbal interactions, we characterized a novel cause for their communication deficits. Adults with ASD matched neurotypical individuals in their ability and propensity to generate and modify intelligible behaviors for a communicative partner. H

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly present for treatment of emotional and behavioral disturbances associated with ASD's "core" symptoms. Psychotropic medications are widely utilized in alleviating associated emotional and behavioral symptoms.
AREAS COVERED: Emotional and behavioral disturbances associated with ASD include irritability/severely disruptive behavior, which comprises the heaviest symptom burden; hyperactivity and other Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD)-type symptoms; repetitive/stereotyped behaviors; and social withdrawal. Auism spectrum disorder (ASD) now affects one in 68 births in the United States and is the fastest growing neurodevelopmental disability worldwide. Alarmingly, for the majority of cases, the causes of ASD are largely unknown, but it is becoming increasingly accepted that ASD is no longer defined simply as a behavioral disorder, but rather as a highly complex and heterogeneous biological disorder. Although research has focused on the identification of genetic abnormalities, emerging studies increasingly suggest that immune dysfunction is a viable risk factor contributing to the neurodevelopment
