Effectiveness of autogenic relaxation training on children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional problems.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of autogenic relaxation training in a mildly disturbed outpatient population of children and adolescents with mostly internalizing symptoms, and/or some aggressive, impulsive, or attention deficit symptoms. METHOD: Fifty children and adolescents from southern Germany (mean age 10.2 years; range 6-15 years; mostly intact middle class family background) participated in a group intervention program. Fifteen patients were randomly assigned to a waiting-list control group. Behavior symptoms (Child Behavior Checklist), psychosomatic complaints (Giessen Co

Autogenic-feedback training exercise is superior to promethazine for control of motion sickness symptoms.

Motion sickness symptoms affect approximately 50% of the crew during space travel and are commonly treated with intramuscular injections of promethazine. The purpose of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of three treatments for motion sickness: intramuscular injections (i.m.) of promethazine, a physiological training method (autogenic-feedback training exercise [AFTE]), and a no-treatment control. An earlier study tested the effects of promethazine on cognitive and psychomotor performance and motion sickness tolerance in a rotating chair. For the present paper, motion sickness toleranc

Reducing motion sickness: a comparison of autogenic-feedback training and an alternative cognitive task.

Eighteen men were randomly assigned to three groups matched for susceptibility to Coriolis motion sickness. All subjects were given six Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI) tests separated by 5-d intervals. Treatment Group I subjects were taught to control their own autonomic responses before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests (6 h total training). Group II subjects were given "sham" training in an alternative cognitive task under conditions otherwise identical to those of Group I. Group III subjects received no treatment. Results showed that Group I subjects could withstand the

Two cases of panic disorder treated with autogenic training and in vivo exposure without medication.

The aim of this study was to use autogenic training in combination with in vivo exposure in the behavioral treatment of panic disorder without medication. Two cases of panic disorder with agoraphobic avoidance were presented. Case 1 was a 33 year old married female who exhibited mild panic symptoms, and case 2 was a 23 year old single male who had severe panic symptoms. Both subjects were successfully treated with the combination of these two techniques. Treatment effects were maintained for 9 years as a follow up in case 1, and for 4 years in case 2.

[Schultz autogenic training and galvanic skin response in the systematic desensitization of a compulsive phobia].

A patient suffering suicidal phobia and resistant to antidepressants as well as electroconvulsive therapy was submitted to Wolpe's systematic desensitization associated with Schult's autogenic training. Ten sessions were sufficient to cure the patient. A follow-up period now extends to one year, without relapse. The concomitent measure of skin galvanic response by an electrodermograph appears a privileged psychophysiological control of such a therapy, i.a. allowing for detection of the avoidance of the anxiogenic evocation by the patient.

[Assessment of the effectiveness of autogenic training in the complex treatment of neurotic and psychopathic states].

An examination of 68 patients with neurotic and psychopathic states detected the existence of significant connections between the method of treatment and reverse development of the symptomatology. The author used sets clinical scales and methods of statistical canonic, regressional and dispersional analysis. The most effective appeared to be autogenic training and aminazine. The effectiveness of aminazine was most distinctly seen in arresting hysterical characterological disturbances. The action of autogenic training in combination with amytriptiline was more effective in the treatment of inso

[Effect of autogenic training with cognitive and symbol therapy on the treatment of patients with primary headache].

BACKGROUND: Only a minor part of headaches are associated with an organic abnormality in the nervous system. In case of migraine and tension headache, the main provoking factor is psychological stress. Furthermore, these syndromes often occur together with depression and anxiety disorders, and when these comorbid conditions are present headache attacks tend to be more frequent, longer and stronger, causing an increase in the consumption of antimigraine agents, and at the same time increase the consumption of antidepressant and anxiolytic agents. Further to drugs, modified versions of Schultz-t

Integrating Ketamine and Autogenic Training for Chronic Pain: A Case Study at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Ketamine has demonstrated efficacy in managing chronic pain and, when combined with psychotherapy, alleviating psychiatric symptoms. However, no published studies have examined the integration of ketamine infusion with autogenic training for chronic pain management. This case study evaluated the feasibility of combining a 24-hour inpatient ketamine infusion with structured autogenic interventions in an active duty service member with neuropathic pain, phantom limb pain, and complex regional pain syndrome following transtibial amputation. The intervention, termed Ketamine and Autogenic Training

Autogenic biofeedback training improves autonomic responses in a participant with cervical motor complete spinal cord injury- case report.

STUDY DESIGN: Single-subject case design OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the Autogenic Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE) on autonomic nervous system responses. INTRODUCTION: AFTE combines specific autogenic exercises with biofeedback of multiple physiological responses. Originally developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), AFTE is used to improve post-flight orthostatic intolerance and motion sickness in astronauts. Individuals with cervical or upper thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) often present symptoms of autonomic dysfunction similar to astronauts. We hypothesize that

Reduced heart rate variability and vagal tone in anxiety: trait versus state, and the effects of autogenic training.

This study investigated heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy volunteers that were selected for extreme scores of trait anxiety (TA), during two opposite psychophysiological conditions of mental stress, and relaxation induced by autogenic training. R-R intervals, HF and LF powers, and LF/HF ratios were derived from short-term electrocardiographic recordings made during mental stress and relaxation by autogenic training, with respiratory rate and skin conductance being controlled for in all the analyses. The main finding was that high TA was associated with reduced R-R intervals and HF power

Effect of autogenic training on drug consumption in patients with primary headache: an 8-month follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of Schultz-type autogenic training on headache-related drug consumption and headache frequency in patients with migraine, tension-type, or mixed (migraine plus tension-type) headache over an 8-month period. BACKGROUND: Behavioral treatments often are used alone or adjunctively for different types of headache. There are, however, only a few studies that have compared the efficacy and durability of the same treatment in different types of primary headache, and the effects of treatment on headache-related drug consumption rarely have been assessed even in these

The effects of a relaxation program featuring aquatic therapy and autogenic training among people with cervical dystonia (a pilot study).

Classic physical interventions for cervical dystonia (CD) have focused on treating motor components or, on motor components and relaxation programs. However, no CD treatment study has focused on a relaxation program alone. We developed a pilot study to assess whether a therapy completely based on a relaxation program could improve the physical and mental symptomatologies of patients with CD. Fifteen persons were included in the experimental group, which received individual sessions of aquatic (Watsu) therapy (WT) and autogenic training (AT). In addition, 12 persons were included in passive con

[Ambulatory short-term therapy of anxiety patients with autogenic training and hypnosis. Results of treatment and 3 months follow-up].

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of a short-term outpatient treatment (6 sessions à 90 minutes) with autogenic training (Schultz 1932) or hypnosis (Erickson and Rossi 1979), concerning patients with anxiety- and panic disorders (according to DSM-III-R and ICD-10-criteria). 27 Outpatients were recruited by newspaper articles. Most of them had not been treated before. Both short-term treatments consisted of 6 weekly group sessions (4-6 patients). Psychological examinations were carried out before and after treatment and at a follow-up after 3 months. Trait anxiety (STAI-X2) and ps

[Instrumental autogenic training of the mechanisms of regulation of the cardiovascular system functions in the treatment of patients with neuroses].

It is advisable that in the treatment of neurotic patients with marked vegetovascular manifestations, instrumental autotraining may be employed. It includes biomonitoring with pulse rate feedback according to the alternating sinusoidal law. The procedure of the autotraining is described in detail. 10 to 13 sessions of the autotraining given to such patients undergoing hospital treatment that also included routine therapy considerably improved the treatment results. The autotraining can thus be considered as a kind of the training of the mechanisms responsible for vegetative function regulation
