UNLABELLED: Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by special facial gestalt, delayed development, and supravalvular aortic stenosis or/and stenosis of the branches of the pulmonary artery. We aim to develop and optimize accurate models of facial recognition to assist in the diagnosis of WBS, and to evaluate their effectiveness by using both five-fold cross-validation and an external test set. We used a total of 954 images from 135 patients with WBS, 124 patients suffering from other genetic disorders, and 183 healthy children. The training set comprised 852 im

Technologies for recognizing facial attributes such as race, gender, age, and emotion from images of human faces have several applications, including personalized advertising, sentiment analysis, and the study of demographic trends and social behaviors. Analyzing face images and facial expressions presents several challenges due to the complexity of human facial attributes and the diversity in representation. While numerous attempts have been made to improve facial attribute classification performance, there remains a strong demand for enhanced accuracy. In this paper, we propose "FaceScanPali

OBJECTIVE: While subjective methods like the Yanagihara system and the House-Brackmann system are standard in evaluating facial paralysis, they are limited by intra- and inter-observer variability. Meanwhile, quantitative objective methods such as electroneurography and electromyography are time-consuming. Our aim was to introduce a swift, objective, and quantitative method for evaluating facial movements.
METHODS: We developed an application software (app) that utilizes the facial recognition functionality of the iPhone (Apple Inc., Cupertino, USA) for facial movement evaluation. This app le

Facial paralysis is a frequently-occurring disease, which causes the loss of the voluntary muscles on one side of the face due to the damages the facial nerve and results in an inability to close the eye and leads to dropping of the angle of the mouth. There have been few objective methods to quantitatively diagnose it and assess this disease for clinically treating the patients so far. The skin temperature distribution of a healthy human body exhibits a contralateral symmetry. Facial paralysis usually causes an alteration of the temperature distribution of body with the disease. This study attempted to assess the reproducibility of 2D and 3D forensic methods for facial depiction from skeletal remains (2D sketch, 3D manual, 3D automated, 3D computer-assisted). In a blind study, thirteen practitioners produced fourteen facial depictions, using the same skull model derived from CT data of a living donor, a biological profile and relevant soft tissue data. The facial depictions were compared to the donor subject using three different evaluation methods: 3D geometric, 2D face recognition ranking and familiar resemblance ratings. Five of the 3D facial depictions (all 3D met

Facial emotion recognition (FER) has traditionally focused on a limited set of basic expressions, often failing to capture the complexity, subtlety, and cultural variability of real-world human emotions. To address these limitations, this paper introduces FER20E, a large-scale facial expression dataset comprising 20 emotion categories, including both basic and fine-grained affective states. The proposed emotion taxonomy is systematically derived by integrating facial action coding system (FACS)-based action units (AUs) with the valence-arousal circumplex model, ensuring both interpretability a

Facial expression recognition (FER) for assistive and telepresence robotics remains challenging under resource-constrained conditions because landmark normalization is often unstable, many datasets have limited variability, and full facial landmark sets introduce redundancy. This paper proposes a lightweight, privacy-preserving FER framework for assistive healthcare robotics based on geometric facial landmarks rather than raw RGB images. The objective is to improve recognition robustness and deployment suitability on low-power edge devices through two complementary contributions: a revised nos

A lack of methods to identify individual animals can be a barrier to zoonoses control. We developed and field-tested facial recognition technology for a mobile phone application to identify dogs, which we used to assess vaccination coverage against rabies in rural Tanzania. Dogs were vaccinated, registered using the application, and microchipped. During subsequent household visits to validate vaccination, dogs were registered using the application and their vaccination status determined by operators using the application to classify dogs as vaccinated (matched) or unvaccinated (unmatched), wit

The primary objective of this paper is to report on the successful implementation of forensic facial approximation in a real case in the forensic context. A three-dimensional (3D) facial approximation protocol of the skull was performed with free software, applying techniques in a virtual environment that have already been consolidated in the literature. The skull was scanned with the photogrammetry technique, the digital replica was imported in the Blender software (Blender Foundation, Amsterdam) and individualized model sketches of the face were traced with the MakeHuman software (MakeHuman

Impaired facial emotion recognition abilities in HIV+ patients are well documented, but little is known about the neural etiology of these difficulties. We examined the relation of facial emotion recognition abilities to regional brain volumes in 44 HIV-positive (HIV+) and 44 HIV-negative control (HC) adults. Volumes of structures implicated in HIV-associated neuropathology and emotion recognition were measured on MRI using an automated segmentation tool. Relative to HC, HIV+ patients demonstrated emotion recognition impairments for fearful expressions, reduced anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)

Facial expression recognition system is an advanced technology that allows machines to recognize human emotions based on their facial expressions. In order to develop a robust prediction model, this research work proposes three distinct architectural models to produce a facial expression prediction system that looks like this: The first model is on using a support vector machine to carry out a classification task. As a follow-up to the second model, an attempt was made to create a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) using the VGG-NET (Visual Geometry Group Network). Following analysis of the resu

Currently, face recognition technology is the most widely used method for verifying an individual's identity. Nevertheless, it has increased in popularity, raising concerns about face presentation attacks, in which a photo or video of an authorized person's face is used to obtain access to services. Based on a combination of background subtraction (BS) and convolutional neural network(s) (CNN), as well as an ensemble of classifiers, we propose an efficient and more robust face presentation attack detection algorithm. This algorithm includes a fully connected (FC) classifier with a majority vot

BACKGROUND: Problems with social-emotional processing are known to be an important contributor to the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). Diminished facial communication of emotion has been frequently reported in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). Less is known about facial expressivity in bulimia nervosa (BN) and in people who have recovered from AN (RecAN). This study aimed to pilot the use of computerised facial expression analysis software to investigate emotion expression across the ED spectrum and recovery in a large sample of participants.

PURPOSE: Hyperspectral imaging is an emerging technology recently introduced in medical applications inasmuch as it provides a powerful tool for noninvasive tissue characterization. In this context, a new system was designed to be easily integrated in the operating room in order to detect anatomical tissues hardly noticed by the surgeon's naked eye.
METHOD: Our LCTF-based spectral imaging system is operative over visible, near- and middle-infrared spectral ranges (400-1700 nm). It is dedicated to enhance critical biological tissues such as the ureter and the facial nerve. We aim to find the b

Currently, predicting a person's facial appearance many years later based on early facial features remains a core technical challenge. In this paper, we propose a cross-age face prediction framework based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). This framework extracts key features from early photos of the target individual and predicts their facial appearance at different ages in the future. Within our framework, we designed a GAN-based image restoration algorithm to enhance image deblurring capabilities and improve the generation of fine details, thereby increasing image resolution. BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, image guidance navigation has been used with increasing frequency as an adjunct during sinus and skull base surgery. These devices commonly utilize surface registration, where varying pressure of the registration probe and loss of contact with the face during the skin tracing process can lead to registration inaccuracies, and the number of registration points incorporated is necessarily limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of novel facial recognition software for image guidance registration.
METHODS: Consecutive adults undergoing endoscopi
