The autonomic nervous system and inflammation in chronic kidney disease.

The autonomic nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating physiological processes and maintaining homeostasis through its two branches: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Dysregulation of the autonomic system, characterized by increased sympathetic activity and reduced parasympathetic tone, is a common feature in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease. This imbalance contributes to a pro-inflammatory state, exacerbating disease progression and increasing the risk for cardiovascular events. The sympathetic system promotes inflammation b

Autonomic nervous system involvement in sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin producing hemoglobin-S (HbS) and resulting in recurrent severe episodes of pain, organ damage and premature death due to vaso- occlusion. Deoxy HbS polymerizes, causing red cells to become rigid and lodge in the microvasculature if they do not escape into larger vessels before this transformation occurs. The mechanism that triggers this transition from steady state to vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) is not known. Patients state that cold, emotional stress, and pain itself can trigger these events. In spite of the connection between thes

Depression, the autonomic nervous system, and coronary heart disease.

Depression is a risk factor for medical morbidity and mortality in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) may explain why depressed patients are at increased risk. Studies of medically well, depressed psychiatric patients have found elevated levels of plasma catecholamines and other markers of altered ANS function compared with controls. Studies of depressed patients with CHD have also uncovered evidence of ANS dysfunction, including elevated heart rate, low heart rate variability, exaggerated heart rate responses to physical stressors,

[Disturbances of the autonomic nervous system in gastroesophageal reflux disease].

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a common clinical problem, which affects the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. The pathophysiology of GERD is associated with dysfunction of the various mechanisms called "the anti-reflux barrier". Lately, the disturbances of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) have been stressed in the pathogenesis of the different diseases (including GERD). The HRV examination (Heart Rate Variability) seems to be the best non-invasive method to evaluate the disturbances of ANS. The aim of our study was to detect possible ANS disturbances in GERD patients. 23 p

Role of Neuroendocrine, Immune, and Autonomic Nervous System in Anorexia Nervosa-Linked Cardiovascular Diseases.

Anorexia nervosa represents a severe mental disorder associated with food avoidance and malnutrition. In patients suffering from anorexia nervosa, cardiovascular complications are the main reason leading to morbidity and mortality. However, the origin and pathological mechanisms leading to higher cardiovascular risk in anorexia nervosa are still unclear. In this aspect, the issue of exact pathological mechanisms as well as sensitive biomarkers for detection of anorexia nervosa-linked cardiovascular risk are discussed. Therefore, this review synthesised recent evidence of dysfunction in multipl

[Patterns in the change of the evoked skin autonomic potential in nervous system diseases].

The study of sympathetic skin response (SSR) was performed both in 30 healthy volunteers either in rest or after pharmacological preparations administration (reserpine, sydnocarb, gammalone) and in 48 patients with autonomic disfunction, syringomyelia, polyneuropathy. It was determined that two processes were presented in SSR structure, exactly: the first one which included I and III phases and was bound with trophotropic functions and the second process which was presented by II phase only and reflected the activity of ergotropic functions. The latent period of SSR reflected the tonus of the

Vagus nerve stimulation in rheumatic diseases: linking autonomic nervous system regulation, inflammation, and clinical outcomes.

Patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases most often exhibit sympathetic overactivity and dominance at the expense of the parasympathetic system, including the vagus nerve. It leads to dysfunction of the negative feedback mechanism within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, resulting in impaired regulation of cortisol levels, stress responses, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, vagal dysfunction affects the mechanism by which acetylcholine binds to α7 nicotinic receptors on macrophage surfaces, thereby inhibiting the release of TNF-α and other pro-inflammatory cytokines

The autonomic nervous system and bone health in chronic kidney disease.

Besides the well-known role of hormonal factors in mineral and bone metabolism, the sympathetic nervous system participates in this regulation by inhibiting bone formation and promoting bone resorption, primarily via β-adrenergic receptors expressed on osteoblasts. Conversely, the parasympathetic system, through cholinergic signalling, inhibits osteoclast activity, promoting bone formation and maintaining skeletal homeostasis. This review presents the role of the autonomic nervous system, with particular focus on the potential role of β-blockers, especially β1-selective blockers, in modulating

Autonomic nervous system involvement in Behçet's disease: a pupillometric study.

The aim of this study was to elucidate whether autonomic nervous system dysfunction exists in patients with Behçet's disease by pupillometric tests. Thirty-one patients with Behçet's disease with a mean age of 41.3 years (range 21-64) and 41 control subjects with a mean age of 39.5 years (range 18-66) were selected for the study. To test the autonomic nervous system, four pupillometric techniques were used: pupil cycle time (PCT), dark-adapted pupil size (DAPS), 0.05% pilocarpine drop test, and 1% phenylephrine drop test. In all four tests, there were significant differences between the patien

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction: implication in sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited hemoglobinopathy caused by a single amino acid substitution in the β chain of hemoglobin that causes the hemoglobin to polymerize in the deoxy state. The resulting rigid, sickle-shaped red cells obstruct blood flow causing hemolytic anemia, tissue damage, and premature death. Hemolysis is continual. However, acute exacerbations of sickling called vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) resulting in severe pain occur, often requiring hospitalization. Blood rheology, adhesion of cellular elements of blood to vascular endothelium, inflammation, and activation of coagulatio

Autonomic Modulation by Electrical Stimulation of the Parasympathetic Nervous System: An Emerging Intervention for Cardiovascular Diseases.

The cardiac autonomic nervous system has been known to play an important role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Autonomic modulation by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which increases the parasympathetic activity and suppresses the sympathetic activity, is emerging as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Here, we review the recent literature on autonomic modulation by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, including vagus nerve stimulation, transcutaneous auricular vagal stimulatio

The Gut-Brain-Immune Axis: Role of Microbiota Dysbiosis and Autonomic Nervous System in Infectious Diseases.

The human gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex microbial ecosystem that plays a fundamental role in maintaining immune balance and defending against infectious diseases. Disruption of this ecosystem, known as dysbiosis, has been increasingly associated with impaired immune responses and heightened susceptibility to infections. Emerging evidence highlights the importance of the gut-brain-immune axis, particularly the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), in regulating these interactions. This systematic review aimed to examine the relationship between gut microbiota dysbiosis and infe

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction in Wilson's disease - A systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: In Wilson's disease (WD), copper accumulation can result in neurological manifestations, particularly extrapyramidal symptoms. There are some data that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) may also be affected, and we aimed to systematically review available studies evaluating ANS dysfunction in WD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature using the PubMed database (up to 31st August 2020), with search terms including "autonomic" and "function" and "Wilson's disease". RESULTS: Fourteen studies, including 297 patients with neurological, hepatic or p

[Intracardial autonomous nervous system in a fatal case of acute Chagas disease].

An analysis of the intracardiac autonomic nervous system (ICANS) has been made in 150 histological sections obtained from atrial fragments of a 74 year-old man who died of cardiac failure, as a consequence of acute Chagas' disease (ACD), probably acquired via digestive tract. Small quantities of mononuclear infiltrate around ganglia and/or nerve branches without significant morphologic alterations of the neurons were found in 10 slides; another slide showed ganglionitis and periganglionitis of moderate intensity associated to neuronal alterations. Focal epicarditis, usually of slight degree, w

Does fatigue in Parkinson's disease correlate with autonomic nervous system dysfunction?

BACKGROUND: Despite its negative impact on quality of life, fatigue in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains an under-recognized issue and the underlying pathology is undetermined. OBJECTIVE: To contribute at understanding the pathogenesis of fatigue in a naturalistic cohort of cognitively intact PD patients. METHODS: In a Caucasian population of PD patients (n = 27), we evaluated to what extent fatigue (quantified as PFS-16 score) is associated with PD duration and with autonomic dysfunction, studied by both MIBG scintigraphy and autonomic nervous system testing. The latter included the head-up
