[Avalanche rescue 2024-Current recommendations].

Avalanche accidents in which winter sports enthusiasts are involved have significantly increased but the number of deaths remains stable due to better prevention and rescue. Avalanche accidents are frequent in mountainous regions and there are around 100 fatalities each year in Europe. The chances of survival are mainly determined by the degree and duration of avalanche burial, a possible airway obstruction, the presence of an air pocket, the snow characteristics and possible severe injuries. The most frequent cause of death is asphyxia, followed by trauma. Hypothermia accounts for only a mino

Power-law properties of nocturnal arrhythmia avalanches: A novel marker for incident cardiovascular events.

BACKGROUND: Bursting nonsustained cardiac arrhythmia events are a common observation during sleep. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that nocturnal arrhythmia episode durations could follow a power law, whose exponent could predict long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: We defined "nocturnal arrhythmia avalanche" (NAA) as any instance of a drop in electrocardiographic (ECG) template-matched R-R intervals ≥30% of R-R baseline, followed by a return to 90% of baseline. We studied NAA in ECG recordings obtained from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), Osteop

Dissection Propagation via Avalanches in Human Descending Thoracic Aorta: Effect of Aging.

Understanding of the risk factors and underlying mechanisms of aortic dissection (AD) is critical for improved clinical management of the disease. How aging, a prominent risk factor for AD, impairs the dissection resistance capabilities of the aorta has not been elucidated. This study integrated mechanical testing, multiphoton imaging and finite element (FE) modeling to investigate the multiscale dissection behavior of human descending thoracic aortas (DTAs) from a wide range of ages. Mechanical testing demonstrated that aging diminishes bonding between the lamellar layers within the media of

Bridging Neuronal Avalanches and Crucial Events: Evidence for Temporal Criticality in EEG.

Neuronal avalanches (NA) are widely studied as manifestations of self-organized criticality (SOC) in neural systems, yet their relationship to crucial events (CE), a hallmark of self-organized temporal criticality (SOTC), remains unexplored. This study provides empirical evidence that NA exhibit CE characteristics through power-law scaling and renewal properties. EEG data from 109 healthy participants, 11 TBI patients, and 47 subjects performing cognitive tasks revealed that inter-avalanche intervals follow an inverse power-law (IPL) distribution (τ), validating the NA-CE link. Power-law fits

Effects of Climate Change on Avalanche Accidents and Survival.

Avalanches are major natural hazards in snow-covered mountains, threatening people and infrastructure. With ongoing climate change, the frequency and types of snow avalanches may change, affecting the rates of avalanche burial and survival. With a wetter and warmer snow climate, consequences of burial may become more severe. In this review, we assess the potential effects of climate change on the frequency and characteristics of avalanches. We then discuss how these changes might affect the survival rates of subjects buried by avalanches and might influence the responses of search and rescue (

Comparison of avalanche survival patterns in Canada and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Current recommendations for rescue and resuscitation of people buried in avalanches are based on Swiss avalanche survival data. We analyzed Canadian survival patterns and compared them with those from Switzerland. METHODS: We extracted relevant data for survivors and nonsurvivors of complete avalanche burials from Oct. 1, 1980, to Sept. 30, 2005, from Canadian and Swiss databases. We calculated survival curves for Canada with and without trauma-related deaths as well as for different outdoor activities and snow climates. We compared these curves with the Swiss survival curve. Enhancing the detection capabilities of nano-avalanches via data-driven classification of acoustic emission signals.

Acoustic emission (AE) is a powerful experimental method for studying discrete and impulsive events termed avalanches that occur in a wide variety of materials and physical phenomena. A particular challenge is the detection of small-scale avalanches, whose associated acoustic signals are at the noise level of the experimental setup. The conventional detection approach is based on setting a threshold significantly larger than this level, ignoring "false" events with low AE amplitudes that originate from noise. At the same time, this approach overlooks small-scale events that might be true and i

Crack Propagation by Activated Avalanches during Creep and Fatigue from Elastic Interface Theory.

The growth of cracks combines materials science, fracture mechanics, and statistical physics. The importance of fluctuations in the crack velocity is fundamental since it signals that the crack overcomes local barriers such as tough spots by avalanches. In ductile materials the omnipresent plasticity close to the crack tip influences the growth by history effects, which we here study in polymethylmetacrylate by various fatigue and creep protocols. We show how the crack tip local history may be encompassed in a time- and protocol-dependent length scale, which allows us to apply a statistical fr

Modeling crack propagation in heterogeneous materials: Griffith's law, intrinsic crack resistance, and avalanches.

Various kinds of heterogeneity in solids, including atomistic discreteness, affect the fracture strength as well as the failure dynamics remarkably. Here we study the effects of an initial crack in a discrete model for fracture in heterogeneous materials, known as the fiber bundle model. We find three distinct regimes for fracture dynamics depending on the initial crack size. If the initial crack is smaller than a certain value, it does not affect the rupture dynamics and the critical stress, while for a larger initial crack, the growth of the crack leads to breakdown of the entire system, and

Posttraumatic stress and other health consequences of catastrophic avalanches: A 16-year follow-up of survivors.

To date, no study has investigated the effects of avalanches on survivor's health beyond the first years. The aim of this study was to examine long-term health status 16 years after exposure to avalanches using a matched cohort design. Mental health, sleep quality and somatic symptoms among avalanche survivors (n=286) and non-exposed controls (n=357) were examined. Results showed that 16% of survivors currently experience avalanche-specific PTSD symptoms (PDS score>14). In addition, survivors presented with increased risk of PTSD hyperarousal symptoms (>85th percentile) (aRR=1.83; 98.3% CI [1.

Emergency care for avalanche buried patients - a narrative review.

Avalanches claim the lives of around 160 winter recreationists and workers in hazardous snow-covered mountain regions worldwide. These fatalities result from asphyxia, trauma, and hypothermia. Survival for critically buried subjects relies on the speed of extrication, absence of trauma, presence of a patent airway and air pocket, immediate field treatment, and rapid transport to the most appropriate hospital by organized search and rescue (SAR) and emergency medical services (EMS). Survival may be improved with helicopter EMS, advancements in safety and rescue equipment technology, early deplo

Avalanche precursor behavior during cyclic-tilting experiments.

Multicycle experiments performed by slowly tilting granular packings in the range ±θ_{M} are analyzed for θ_{M}=21, 22, 23, and 23.5^{∘}. Based on optical measurements of the free surface activity, a method is developed to detect numerous bead rearrangements associated to almost regular peaks of activity: on average, 1800 events are detected during an experiment. Occurring 11^{∘} after the beginning of the inclination, precursors represent 75% of these events and the interprecursor angle tends to decrease when the surface activity increases. The evolution of the cumulative activity with the ha

Application of Ultraviolet Light in Dental Identification of Avalanche Victims.

In any disaster, it becomes important to identify the deceased for ethical, social and legal causes.Out of the numerous methods of identification, dental comparison is considered to be one of the scientific methods in a Disaster Victim Identification process. The two victims of avalanche in Nepal were identified using dental comparison. The two bodies brought for examination were unidentifiable visually. To aid identification of tooth coloured restorations, ultraviolet light was used. The ultraviolet light made the tooth coloured restorations appear distinct from the adjacent tooth structure i
