Despite advances in robot-assisted rehabilitation, existing control strategies often lack real-time personalization to account for subject-specific physiological capabilities, limiting the effectiveness of assist-as-needed interventions. Moreover, there is a further need to account for the patient's physiological functional capacity (PFC) in the design of such assistive technology. Here, an attempt has been made to create an Assist-as-Needed (AAN) Controller that works in collaboration with a Smart Avatar. The Smart Avatar mimics the patient's capabilities by learning in real-time and informin

BACKGROUND: Body size estimation-the ability to judge the size and shape of one's own body-is a key perceptual component of body image. However, its neural basis, and the basis for inter-individual differences in accuracy, remain poorly understood, partly due to limitations in existing assessment tools.
METHODS: We developed Somatomap 3D, an interactive fMRI-compatible task allowing participants to manipulate a rotatable 3D avatar by adjusting the size and shape of 26 individual body parts to match their perceived body. Twenty-eight healthy male and female adults completed the task during fMR

Gait guidance systems that synchronize the gait rhythm with an avatar in a mixed reality (MR) environment are attracting attention owing to their rehabilitation applications. More effective gait guidance can be achieved by changing body sensations for the sense of embodiment (SoE), which refers to the feeling of owning, controlling, and being inside a body in MR. This study investigated full-body synchronous motion between a human and a virtual avatar to enhance the SoE in walking with actual position changes in the real world. The full-body motion and gait rhythm were measured using body-worn

Research on construal level theory suggests that psychological distance enhances creativity, as people tend to be more creative when considering events or objects that are spatially or temporally distant. With immersive technologies, individuals can use different forms of digital representations (or avatars) for work or entertainment in immersive virtual reality (IVR). We hypothesized that embodying an avatar with a dissimilar appearance, compared to a similar one, would induce psychological distance and thus enhance creative thinking and insight problem solving. To test this hypothesis, parti

Virtual reality self-counseling (VR-SC) is considered an effective approach for addressing mental health problems. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of VR-SC using Sigmund Freud's avatar as the counselor. However, considering that virtual reality (VR) enables embodied perspective-taking of another person, VR-SC using the avatar of a person who cares about the participant (an intimate person), such as a family member or friend, is considered effective because it could create warm attitudes toward the participants themselves. In this study, 60 undergraduate and graduate students were

Gaming avatars can influence users' attitudes and behaviors and manifest as the proteus effect. The present study examined proteus effect profiles among 571 gamers and their associations with disordered gaming and physical activity. Latent class analysis identified three profiles: non-influenced gamers, emotion-perception influenced gamers (highest proteus effect), and emotion-behavior influenced gamers (moderate proteus effect). The high proteus effect group exhibited significantly higher gaming disorder symptoms at baseline and 6 months compared to other profiles. Proteus effect profiles did

AVATAR therapy represents an effective new way of working with distressing voices based on face-to-face dialogue between the person and a digital representation (avatar) of their persecutory voice. To date, there has been no complete account of AVATAR therapy delivery. This article presents, for the first time, the full range of therapeutic targets along with information on acceptability and potential side effects. Interest in the approach is growing rapidly and this report acts as a necessary touchstone for future development.

BACKGROUND: Since subjects with Rett syndrome (RTT) focus their attention mainly on the faces of people with whom they interact, in this study the role of a human-like smart interactive agent (an avatar) in enhancing cognitive processes is examined. More in depth, this study aimed to understand if, and to what extent, the use of an avatar can improve attention and memory abilities in subjects with RTT.
METHOD: Thirty-six subjects with RTT participated in the study. All participants performed over-selectivity and memory tasks, for a total of six trials. These trials were randomly presented in

BACKGROUND: Voices are commonly experienced as communication with a personified 'other' with ascribed attitudes, intentionality and personality (their own 'character'). Phenomenological work exploring voice characterisation informs a new wave of relational therapies. To date, no study has investigated the role of characterisation in behavioural engagement with voices or within psychological therapy for distressing voices.
METHODS: Baseline characterisation (the degree to which the voice is an identifiable and characterful entity) of the dominant voice was rated (high, medium or low) using a n

BACKGROUND: Organoid technology is an emerging and rapidly growing field that shows promise in studying organ development and screening therapeutic regimens. Although organoids have been proposed for a decade, concerns exist, including batch-to-batch variations, lack of the native microenvironment and clinical applicability.
MAIN BODY: The concept of organoids has derived patient-derived tumour organoids (PDTOs) for personalized drug screening and new drug discovery, mitigating the risks of medication misuse. The greater the similarity between the PDTOs and the primary tumours, the more influ

AVATAR therapy offers a unique therapeutic context that uses virtual reality technology to create a virtual embodiment of the voice-hearing experience, enabling the person to visualize their persecutory voice and engage in real-time "face-to-face" dialogue. The present study explores, for the first time, the contribution of sense of voice presence, together with session-by-session reduction of anxiety and paranoid attributions about the avatar, to changes in primary outcomes following AVATAR therapy. Data from 39 participants, who completed AVATAR therapy and attended a 12-week follow-up asses

Virtual reality (VR) technology provides a way to conduct exposure therapy with patients with social anxiety. However, the primary limitation of current technology is that the operator is limited to pre-programed avatars that cannot be controlled to interact/converse with the patient in real time. The current study piloted new technology allowing the operator to directly control the avatar (including speaking) during VR conversations. Using an incomplete repeated measures (VR vs. in vivo conversation) design and random starting order with rotation counterbalancing, participants (N = 26) provid

BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in developing novel psychological interventions for eating disorders, with an emphasis on targeting maintaining factors. One hypothesized mechanism underlying illness maintenance is the experience of an "inner eating disorder voice," which reinforces maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Preliminary studies suggest that the eating disorder voice is common among patients and is linked to greater illness severity.
OBJECTIVE: This single-arm, mixed methods pilot feasibility study aimed to evaluate a novel virtual reality (VR)-based therapy targeti

In older adults, although gait training using a VR avatar has recently garnered attention, standing implementations entail safety risks and high operational costs. Therefore, we aimed to establish a safe and feasible gait training approach by leveraging rhythm assistance from a VR avatar in a seated posture, and to examine its acute effects on gait performance as a proof-of-concept. We developed a multimodal audiovisual feedback system that presents a walking VR avatar synchronized in real time with the participant's arm swing, and conducted seated gait training for twelve healthy older adults

The premise of personalized medicine is that patients exhibit significant heterogeneity and respond differently to treatments. The best treatment for one patient may not be suitable for another. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian adaptive design for an avatar-driven clinical trial, using mouse or laboratory animal grafts to create personalized tumor models that guide individualized patient treatment while accounting for translational discrepancy between avatars and patients. We jointly model the tumor growth of avatars and the clinical outcomes of patients, including toxicity and progression

The rise in online interactions has introduced multiple challenges, including confusion during virtual meetings and fatigue associated with prolonged video conferencing. To address these issues, this study advocates using computer graphics (CG) avatars in dialogue systems that do not rely on camera feeds. Avatars have the potential to diminish gaze-related misunderstandings and reduce dissatisfaction arising from viewing oneself in video calls. Moreover, fatigue from continuous face-to-face interaction in multi-person conversations can be mitigated by avatar usage. Previous studies indicate th

BACKGROUND: AVATAR therapy is an innovative therapy designed to support people with distressing voices. Voice hearers co-create a digital representation of their voice and engage in dialogue with it. Although it has been successfully tested in a powered randomised controlled trial (ISRCTN65314790), the participants' experience of this therapy has not been yet evaluated. We aimed to explore enablers and barriers to engagement with the therapy and potential for real-world impact on distressing voices.
METHODS: Thirty per cent of those who completed AVATAR therapy (15 people in total) and 5 who
