George E. Palade memorial lecture: My life in pancreatic research-unexpected results may open the door.

The Palade Prize is the most distinguished award of the IAP for achievement in pancreatic research. It is named after George E. Palade, who in 1974 was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on protein trafficking in pancreatic acinar cells. It is a great honor to be awarded the 2016 Palade Prize. While I was in graduate school, I was conducting research on hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis; after finishing graduate school, I began research on amylase isoenzymes. This was the first step of my pancreatic research. Once I discovered that there are close relationships among blood glucose levels, a

The continuum of insulin development viewed in the context of a collaborative process toward leveraging science to save lives: Following the trail of publications and patents one century after insulin's first use in humans.

Nearly 100 years ago, diabetes, a disease expected to reach global prevalence of at least 10% within the decade, was a fatal diagnosis. This year of 2022 marks a century since insulin, a lifesaving treatment for those living with diabetes, was purified, tested in humans, and brought to the bedside through widespread commercial production, thus saving countless lives. Insulin's arrival to the world stage was acknowledged with the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for "the discovery of insulin", the first among several Prizes awarded to honor scientific work on insulin. This initial awa

T-regulatory cells-Triumph of perseverance: The Crafoord Prize for Polyarthritis in 2017.

The Crafoord Prize in Polyarthritis ranks as one of the most prestigious prizes and can be awarded only if the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decides the likelihood of prize worthy progress in the field, and at most every 4th year. This has happened only four times since 1982. This year the 5th Laureates were Shimon Sakaguchi, Fred Ramsdell, and Alexander Rudensky with the motivation "for their discoveries relating to regulatory T cells, which counteract harmful immune reactions in arthritis and other autoimmune diseases". Here I review the history of their contributions and its impact in r

[From the Scrapie syndrome of sheep and goat to the mad cow disease - the history of the discovery of prion].

Since the discovery of Scrapie Syndrome in sheep and goats in 1730, there emerged a series of diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru disease and mad cow disease etc. In the research of kuru disease, the American scientist D. Carlteton Gajdusek found a new virus without the characteristic of DNA and RNA, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology in 1976. Since then another American scientist, Stanley B. Prusiner, found a new virus-prion, taking protein as the genetic medium, which was awarded the Nobel prize in physiology and medicine in 1997. The discovery of prion is a great l

Scandinavia and the replacement of in vivo toxicity tests: Some personal reflections. The 2015 Bjorn Ekwall Memorial Award Lecture.

A personal, and therefore unavoidably biased, review is given, of the significance of the contributions made by selected Scandinavian individuals, organisations and events, to the development of in vitro toxicology procedures as potential replacements for toxicity tests in laboratory animals. In addition to their wider significance, these contributions had a profound effect on whatever contributions I have been able to make, myself. Nevertheless, while there has been much progress in the last 35 years or so, and many lessons have been learned, there is still much to be done, especially as anim
