Baccharis dracunculifolia is the most important botanical source of Southeastern Brazilian propolis, known as green propolis for its colour. In a previous study, we described the gastric protective effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Brazilian green propolis. We therefore wanted to investigate the possibility of using B. dracunculifolia extract for antiulcer treatment. This study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-ulcerogenic property of hydroalcoholic extract of B. dracunculifolia aerial parts. The HPLC analysis of the chemical composition of B. dracunculifolia extract used in this study

In this study, the antiulcerogenic effect of essential oil from Baccharis dracunculifolia was evaluated using the model of acute gastric lesions induced by ethanol. The ulcerative lesion index (ULI) was significantly reduced by oral administration of the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia at doses of 50, 250 and 500 mg/kg which reduced the lesions by 42.79, 45.70 and 61.61%, respectively. The analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oil from B. dracunculifolia by GC showed that this was composed mainly of mono- and sesquiterpenes and the majority compound was nerolidol. Therefore

In the course of selection of new bioactive compounds from Brazilian flora, the crude MeOH extract from the leaves of Baccharis retusa DC. (Asteraceae) showed potential against Leishmania sp. and Trypanosoma cruzi. Chromatographic fractionation of the dichloromethane phase from MeOH extract yielded great amounts of the bioactive derivative, which was characterized as 5,6,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyflavanone. The structure of this compound was established on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis, mainly nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry.

Baccharis genus Asteraceae is widely used in traditional treatment against fever, headache, hepatobiliary disorders, skin ulcers, diabetes, and rheumatism, as well as an antispasmodic and diuretic. Its phytochemistry mainly shows the presence of flavonoids and terpenoids such as monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, and triterpenes. Some of them have been evaluated for biological activities presenting allelopathic, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and anti-inflammatory properties. In this paper, our research group reported the isolation, characterization, and antifungal evaluation of several mole

Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease caused by the trematode species Schistosoma mansoni. Chemotherapy is the only immediate recourse to minimize the prevalence and incidence of this disease worldwide. At present, praziquantel (PZQ) is the drug of choice for the treatment of all forms of schistosomiasis. However, dependence on a single drug is concern because some strains can become resistant. In this context, medicinal plants become potential candidates as sources of new drug prototypes. This study provides findings on the schistosomicidal activity of the essential oil of Baccharis

The hepatoprotective effects of B. dracunculifolia (HEBD) and BGP (HEGP) hydroalcoholic extracts were assessed in this study. Mice given oral 30% ethanol and LPS (2 mg/kg, i.p.) were administered either vehicle, silymarin (200 mg/kg), HEBD, or HEGP (30-300 mg/kg, p.o.) for 10 days. While both extracts decreased GPT serum levels at all doses, HEBD and HEGP (30 mg/kg) decreased GOT serum levels. While ethanol/LPS decreased GSH, GST, and CAT activities and increased liver MDA twice, HEBD or HEGP attenuated these changes. Additionally, MPO and NAG activities, as well as IL-6 and IL-10 levels, were

Antioxidants are considered as a potential therapeutic to reduce the risk of chronic diseases related to oxidative stress, one of them is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), characterized by an increase in intracellular lipid content. We conducted a central composite rotatable design, using Citrus sinensis (CS) leaves, to optimize aqueous infusion conditions to obtain maximum antioxidant capacity (30 mg leaves/mL, incubated at 70 °C for 14 min). We also developed this approach to Baccharis articulate (BA) aerial parts, a native Argentine shrub with traditional med

Baccharis dracunculifolia (DC) is an important botanical source of Brazilian green propolis and have many compounds with potential antihypertensive activity. However, little is known about the specific antihypertensive properties of DC, or the mechanisms involved. Here we aimed to chemically characterise an ethanolic DC extract (eDC), test its antihypertensive properties and the involvement of neurogenic mechanisms using an animal model of salt-dependent hypertension. The chemical analysis of the eDC revealed the presence of many antihypertensive compounds. Administering the eDC in a nanoemuls

The p-coumaric acid is a phenolic compound present in large quantities in the extract of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC, a Brazilian medicinal plant used to treat gastric ulcer. Given the necessity for finding new chemical components capable of accelerating gastric healing, in this study, the effects of the p-coumaric acid were evaluated in the acetic acid-induced ulcer model in rats, where histological, inflammatory, and oxidative parameters were analyzed. The healing property was also evaluated in the scratch assay on fibroblast cells (L929) and the cytotoxicity of p-coumaric acid was assessed

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of deaths worldwide. Complementary therapies, such as medicinal plants, have become increasingly common among treatment options. We propose to investigate the cardioprotective effects of the ethanol-soluble fraction obtained from the aerial parts of Baccharis milleflora in hypertensive rats. Cladodes of B. milleflora were collected, and the aqueous extract was obtained by infusion. The infusion was then treated with ethanol, resulting in the ethanol-soluble fraction of B. milleflora, which was analyzed by LC-DAD-MS. The MS and MS/MS data obtained
