Probiotics Bacillus licheniformis Improves Intestinal Health of Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis-Challenged Broilers.

Necrotic enteritis infection poses a serious threat to poultry production, and there is an urgent need for searching effective antibiotic alternatives to control it with the global ban on in-feed antibiotics. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary Bacillus licheniformis replacing enramycin on the growth performance and intestinal health of subclinical necrotic enteritis (SNE)-challenged broilers. In total, 504 1-day-old Arbor Acres male chickens were selected and subsequently assigned into three treatments, including PC (basal diet + SNE challenge), PA (basal diet extra

Invited review: Role of Bacillus licheniformis in the dairy industry-Friends or foes?

Bacillus licheniformis is one of the major spore-forming bacteria with great genotypic diversity in raw milk, dairy ingredients, and final dairy products; it is found throughout the dairy-processing continuum. Although being widely used as a probiotic strain, this species also serves as a potential risk in the dairy industry based on its roles in foodborne illness and dairy spoilage. Biofilm formation of B. licheniformis, combined with the heat resistance of its spores, make it impossible to prevent the presence of B. licheniformis in final dairy products by using traditional cleaning and disi

Lichenysin Production by Bacillus licheniformis Food Isolates and Toxicity to Human Cells.

Bacillus licheniformis can cause foodborne intoxication due to the production of the surfactant lichenysin. The aim of this study was to measure the production of lichenysin by food isolates of B. licheniformis in LB medium and skimmed milk and its cytotoxicity for intestinal cells. Out of 11 B. licheniformis isolates tested, most showed robust growth in high salt (1M NaCl), 4% ethanol, at 37 or 55°C, and aerobic and anaerobic conditions. All strains produced lichenysin (in varying amounts), but not all strains were hemolytic. Production of this stable compound by selected strains (high produc

Immobilization of β-galactosidase from Bacillus licheniformis for application in the dairy industry.

The food industry has developed a wide range of products with reduced lactose to allow people with intolerance to consume dairy products. Although β-galactosidase has extensive applications in the food, pharma, and biotechnology industries, the enzymes are high-cost catalysts, and their use makes the process costly. Immobilization is a viable strategy for enzyme retention inside a reactor, allowing its reuse and application in continuous processes. Here, we studied the immobilization of β-galactosidase from Bacillus licheniformis in ion exchange resin. A central composite rotational design (CC

Impact of Bacillus licheniformis from yaks following antibiotic therapy in mouse model.

Gut microorganism (GM) is an integral component of the host microbiome and health system. Abuse of antibiotics disrupts the equilibrium of the microbiome, affecting environmental pathogens and host-associated bacteria alike. However, relatively little research on Bacillus licheniformis alleviates the adverse effects of antibiotics. To test the effect of B. licheniformis as a probiotic supplement against the effects of antibiotics, cefalexin was applied, and the recovery from cefalexin-induced jejunal community disorder and intestinal barrier damage was investigated by pathology, real-time PCR

Bacillus licheniformis bloodstream infections associated with oral probiotic administration: Two case reports.

Bacillus licheniformis is a facultative anaerobe, gram-positive, endogenous, spore-forming bacillus. It is included in a probiotic preparation commonly used in clinical practice and is usually safe for oral administration. In this paper, we report two cases of bloodstream infection resulting from using B. licheniformis probiotic preparations for gastrointestinal bleeding. The results suggest that B. licheniformis should be used with caution in people who are immunocompromised and suffering from severe= damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Characterization of halo-tolerant plant growth promoting endophytic Bacillus licheniformis MHN 12.

BACKGROUND: Endophytic bacteria overlay significant role in plant growth promotion, eliminating phyto-pathogens and combating stress-conditions. In the present study, we aimed to screen high salt tolerant bacteria and study their adaptive response to elevated salt concentrations. A total of 46 endophytic bacterial isolates from Vigna radiata were screened for salt tolerance. The high salt tolerant endophytic isolate was characterized for alteration in morphology, growth rate, protein profiling, and compatible solute concentrations. RESULTS: The isolate MHN12, based upon biochemical characteri

Comparative Evaluation of Spores and Vegetative Forms of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis on Probiotic Functionality In Vitro and In Vivo.

The probiotic effects of Bacillus are strain-specific and dependent on both spore and vegetative forms, but the distinct contributions of these forms to probiotic functionality are not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the impacts of vegetative forms and spores of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis on probiotic functions in vitro and in vivo. We systematically assessed the anaerobic metabolic capabilities and the potential to enhance the intestinal barrier function of four Bacillus strains, leading to the selection of Bacillus subtilis X22 and Bacillus licheni

Inactivation Effect of Germination Combined with Cold Plasma Treatment on Bacillus licheniformis Spores.

Food spoilage, primarily caused by spore-forming bacteria, has become a critical concern since it results in substantial economic losses within the food industry. Past investigations have successfully identified Bacillus licheniformis as the main bacterium responsible for spoilage in roast chicken. In this study, we screened a new sterilization combination from 16 germinants and 4 cold plasma conditions, respectively. Among them, the combination of "A"GFNa-1 (composed of 60 mmol/L L-alanine, 10 mmol/L D-glucose, 10 mmol/L D-fructose, and 1 g/L NaCl) with cold plasma treatment (packed with 100%

[Isolation, identification and prokaryotic expression of a bacteriocin-like substance from Bacillus licheniformis].

The ban on addition of antibiotics in animal feed in China has made the search for new antibiotics substitutes, e.g. bacteriocin, a hot topic in research. The present study successfully isolated an antibacterial substance producing strain of Bacillus sp. from alpaca feces by agar diffusion method, using Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Micrococcus luteus and Listeria monocytogenes as indicator bacteria. The isolated strain was named as B. licheniformis SXAU06 based on colony morphology, Gram staining and 16S rRNA gene sequence. The antib

Fluorescent CdSe QDs containing Bacillus licheniformis bioprobes for Copper (II) detection in water.

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) that offer valuable functionality for cellular labeling, drug delivery, solar cells and quantum computation. In this study, we reported that CdSe QDs could be bio-synthesized in Bacillus licheniformis. After optimization, the obtained CdSe QDs exhibited a uniform particle size of 3.71±0.04nm with a maximum fluorescence emission wavelength at 550nm and the synthetical positive ratio can reach up to 87%. Spectral properties, constitution, particle sizes and crystalline phases of the CdSe QDs were systematically and integrally investigated.

Bacillus licheniformis septicemia in a very-low-birth-weight neonate: a case report.

Nosocomial infections in neonatal intensive care units are a preoccupying issue. Bacillus sp. can be pathogenic in immuno-compromised hosts, including premature infants. Central catheters and mechanical ventilation are potential sources of infection. We report for the first time a case of Bacillus licheniformis bacteremia in a premature infant. Recovery necessitated treatment with vancomycin and cefotaxime in combination with removal of the central catheter.

Unraveling the ecological interactions between dairy strains Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus cereus during the dual-species biofilm formation.

Bacillus cereus and Bacillus licheniformis are widely presented in dairy products. They can form thick biofilms on surfaces of dairy processing equipment, which may pose serious safety issues and spoilage of final dairy products. However, how ecological interactions between B. cereus and B. licheniformis affect the functions and stability of mixed-species biofilm remains uncovered. In this work, the altered profiles of a dual-species biofilm by dairy-derived B. cereus 121 and B. licheniformis 919 were investigated by RNA-sequencing analysis in combined with phenotype validation (bacterial grow

Crystal structure of the sensor domain of the BlaR penicillin receptor from Bacillus licheniformis.

As in several staphylococci, the synthesis of the Bacillus licheniformis 749/I beta-lactamase is an inducible phenomenon regulated by a signal-transducing membrane protein BlaR. The C-terminal domain of this multimodular protein is an extracellular domain which specifically recognizes beta-lactam antibiotics. When it binds a beta-lactam, a signal is transmitted by the transmembrane region to the intracellular loops. In response, the hydrolytic activity of the BlaR large cytoplasmic L3 loop is induced, and a cascade of reactions is generated, leading to the transcription of the beta-lactamase g

Integrated physiological characteristics and proteomes of Bacillus licheniformis response to 6-month spaceflight.

Bacillus licheniformis (BL) is used for clinical treatment of acute and chronic enteritis and diarrhea. The present study explored the physiological characteristics and proteomes of BL response to 6-month spaceflight aboard the China Space Station. 6-month spaceflight delayed BL lag phase, reduced cell wall thickness, and impaired BL biofilm formation and adhesion capacity to Caco-2 cells. After 6-month spaceflight, activity of β-amylase, alkaline protease and lipase in BL was increased by 21.6%,67.3% and 42.5%. The alkaline resistance of BL at pH 11.0 was increased by 29.6%.
