Biomechanical evaluation of Back injuries during typical snowboarding backward falls.

To prevent spinal and back injuries in snowboarding, back protector devices (BPDs) have been increasingly used. The biomechanical knowledge for the BPD design and evaluation remains to be explored in snowboarding accident conditions. This study aims to evaluate back-to-snow impact conditions and the associated back injury mechanisms in typical snowboarding backward falls. A previously validated snowboarder multi-body model was first used to evaluate the impact zones on the back and the corresponding impact velocities in a total of 324 snowboarding backward falls. The biomechanical responses du

Use of modified Boston brace for back injuries in athletes.

The Boston Brace System was developed to attain functional realignment of the scoliotic spine. This system uses prefabricated thermoplastic pelvic modules which can be rapidly fitted to an individual patient. These modules are available in 20 sizes and designed with a forward flexion of 30 degrees on the anterior margin and 15 degrees on the posterior surface. The resultant antilordotic straightening of the lumbar spine is important in correcting the scoliotic spine and has been found to be therapeutically effective in managing a number of other conditions of the spine, including back injuries

ACC and back injuries: the relevance of pre-existing asymptomatic conditions.

The purpose of the ARCI (1992) and AI (198) Acts is to cover those who suffered from personal injury by accident. This purpose should not be distorted. This review does not aim to suggest that cover be extended to victims of disease. Equally it is inappropriate that imaging be used to detect asymptomatic, age-related change--or reveal asymptomatic abnormalities that do not place the patient at increased risk of symptoms over the general population--so as to unfairly deny coverage to the victims of accidents. This is particularly important to those who suffer personal injury to the lumbar spine

Follow-back study of oldest workers with emergency department-treated injuries.

The aging of the U.S. workforce highlights the need to address issues affecting older workers specifically. Telephone surveys were conducted with injured workers identified through a surveillance system based in a sample of emergency departments in the United States. The 176 interviewed cases correspond to a national estimate of 8,263 (s.e. = 1,258) injuries to workers aged 63 years and older during May 15-September 30, 1993. Five percent reported limitations in the types or amount of work they could perform prior to the injury. Ninety-four percent reported familiarity with the task resulting

Back injuries and pain in adolescents attending a ski high school.

This study compared overuse injuries, small abnormalities, and pain alone in different types of skiing and activity levels. Subjects were 45 ski high school athletes aged 15-19 years. We found the back and knees significantly more prone to activity-related injuries and pain than other body regions. Thirty subjects (67%) had low back pain on the first examination, and 17 had pain caused by overuse of the back. This was more frequent among active, young competitive boys in the cross-country skiing group, with mature height less than 99%, than among noncompetitive boys in the same group or among

New strategies in the management of low back injuries in gymnasts.

Low back pain is an extremely common complaint in competitive gymnasts, and these athletes are at risk for multiple potential structural injuries to the spine. Of particular concern among gymnasts is spondylolysis. Unfortunately, there are no published, controlled trials on the diagnosis or treatment of spondylolysis in adolescent athletes. However, based on the current literature, there would appear to be little role for the use of plain radiography in the diagnosis of symptomatic spondylolysis; nuclear imaging with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) appears to represent the b

The psychosocial implications of back injury at work.

The majority of studies on back injury have been quantitative in nature, focusing on ergonomic or financial implications of back injury problems for trusts and the profession. The psychological and social effects upon the individual suffering the injury have largely been ignored. This qualitative study sought to redress the balance by examining why injuries were occurring. It focuses on the personal cost of back injury to nurses and its effect on their lives and careers. Questionnaires were sent to members of the Work Injured Nurses' Group (WING) which is funded by the Royal College of Nursing

Compensated back injury in New Zealand.

Back injury is one of the commonest claims for accident compensation. A survey carried out over three months in 1984 identified 420 claimants having details of their accidents. Labourers, freezing workers, coal miners and railway workers were at high risk. Over half (54.7%) developed back pain whilst lifting and for almost two-thirds (63.6%) there was a sudden strain. Half had a previous history of back pain and the incidence rose to 70% for those aged 40-59 years. Eighty-two percent returned to work within four weeks. Most were treated by a general practitioner and physiotherapy was increasin

Back injury prevention program on a spinal cord injury unit.

A back injury prevention program was developed for the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) nursing staff at the San Diego Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SDVAMC). This preventive program has the following components: 1. All nursing staff are sent to a one hour "back school" in order to learn and practice proper body mechanics. This program is held in the therapy clinic and conducted by a kinesiotherapist. In addition, each nurse must be certified in transfer techniques by our clinical nurse specialist, before performing transfers on patients. 2. All nursing staff participate in 5-10 minutes of stretchin

ACC and back injuries: the relevance of pre-existing asymptomatic conditions revisited.

The application of the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) legislation in the management of patients who sustain back injuries requires a detailed knowledge of the pathogenesis of tissue injury, and the natural history of ageing and related conditions, so that the application of the ACC Act(s) is appropriate. We have reviewed the new information published in the last decade, and updated the previous knowledge basis in these fields, so as to assist the interpretation of the Act(s).

Delayed trunk muscle reflex responses increase the risk of low back injuries.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study with a 2- to 3-year follow-up. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether delayed muscle reflex response to sudden trunk loading is a result of or a risk factor for sustaining a low back injury (LBI). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Differences in motor control have been identified in individuals with chronic low back pain and in athletes with a history of LBI when compared with controls. However, it is not known whether these changes are a risk for or a result of LBI. METHODS: Muscle reflex latencies in response to a quick force release in trunk flexion, ext

Bilateral Back Extensor Exosuit for multidimensional assistance and prevention of spinal injuries.

Lumbar spine injuries resulting from heavy or repetitive lifting remain a prevalent concern in workplaces. Back-support devices have been developed to mitigate these injuries by aiding workers during lifting tasks. However, existing devices often fall short in providing multidimensional force assistance for asymmetric lifting, an essential feature for practical workplace use. In addition, validation of device safety across the entire human spine has been lacking. This paper introduces the Bilateral Back Extensor Exosuit (BBEX), a robotic back-support device designed to address both functionali

Swimming Anatomy and Lower Back Injuries in Competitive Swimmers: A Narrative Review.

CONTEXT: Competitive swimmers are at high risk of overuse musculoskeletal injuries due to their high training volumes. Spine injuries are the second most common musculoskeletal injury in swimmers and are often a result of the combination of improper technique, high loads on the spine in strokes that require hyperextension, and repetitive overuse leading to fatigue of the supporting trunk muscles. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current evidence regarding swimming biomechanics, stroke techniques, and common injuries in the lumbar spine to promote a discussion on the prevention an

Back pack injuries in Indian school children: risk factors and clinical presentations.

The use of backpack increased substantially among the school children. Studies have shown that carrying a backpack cause to develop different symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders among the carrier of the backpack. In India there are fewer studies available in literature which explains the musculoskeletal discomfort among the school children. This study aimed at to find out the prevalence of different musculoskeletal problems among the school children. In a retrospective study data were collected for twenty two students. The main diagnostic criteria were pressure mark (redness or swelling) ove

Factors associated with early opioid prescription among workers with low back injuries.

UNLABELLED: Prescription of opioids for nonmalignant musculoskeletal pain has increased substantially in recent years, but there is little information on the incidence of, or factors associated with, such prescription for work-related back pain. In a prospective cohort study (N = 1,067), we examined associations between worker sociodemographic and other characteristics and opioid prescription within six weeks of the first medical visit for workers' compensation claims for work loss due to back injury. We examined administrative, pharmacy, and worker-reported data. In bivariate logistic regress

Risk indicators for reported over-exertion back injuries among female nursing personnel.

We conducted a case-referent study to identify and quantify work-related and non-work-related risk indicators for reported over-exertion back injuries among nursing personnel. The source population was all nursing personnel employed in the Stockholm County hospitals during a 32-month period. The 240 cases and 614 referents completed questionnaires about occupation, type of clinic, working hours, shift work, patient transfers, perceived exertion, back pain, prior back injury, job strain, body mass index (BMI), smoking, immigrant status, physical training, and self-rated fitness. Low back injuries among home health aides compared with hospital nursing aides.

Data were collected from all incident reports of low back injury during 1984-1986 among nursing aides at one hospital and home health aides at two agencies in the Baltimore-Washington area. Respective rates of injury were 5.9/100 FTE's and 15.4/100 FTE's (p < 0.001). A majority of injuries occurred during patient-related, planned activities and without the use of lifting equipment. Forty percent of the events occurred at the bedside. Eighty-eight percent of home health aides were working alone compared with 39 percent of NAs.
