The role of anaerobic bacteria in tonsillitis.

This review summarizes the information that supports the potential importance of anaerobic bacteria in tonsillitis. Some anaerobic bacteria possess interfering capability with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) and other pathogens. The possible role of anaerobes in the acute inflammatory process in the tonsils is supported by several observations: anaerobes have been isolated from the cores of tonsils of patients with recurrent GABHS and non-GABHS tonsillitis (NST); the recovery of anaerobes as predominant pathogens in abscesses of tonsils, in many cases without any aerobic bacteria;

The consequences of suppression of anaerobic bacteria.

Anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides fragilis, Peptostreptococcus species, and Fusobacterium species, when accompanied by aerobic bacteria or in the presence of dead tissue, can cause severe infections. This article discusses the most common type of anaerobic infection, i.e., infection after colonic contamination of the abdominal cavity and soft tissues. Colonic anaerobes rarely cause infections as solitary pathogens. Mixed infections of aerobes and anaerobes are treated by source control, surgical drainage and debridement, and combination antibiotic therapy. Antimicrobial treatment should c

Pathogenic anaerobic bacteria and the environment.

The distribution of pathogenic anaerobes in the environment and the relationship with diseases in animals are discussed. A distinction between the spore-bearing anaerobes (clostridia) and the Gram-negative non-spore-forming anaerobes is necessary. The main habitat of clostridia is the soil but they are also found in dust, sewage, rivers, lakes, sea water, milk, vegetables, fresh meat, fish, insects and the intestinal tract. The Gram-negative non-spore-forming anaerobic bacteria are also widely distributed among animals, principally on mucous membranes of the alimentary tract. After a general i

Anaerobic bacteria in septicaemia and endocarditis.

Anaerobic septicaemia is often a complication of preexisting anaerobic sepsis which is commonly a complication of surgical interference. The predominant anaerobic bacterial isolate in septicaemia if Bacteroides fragilis. Anaerobic cocci and clostridia are not infrequently found as causes of septicaemia. The incidence of polymicrobial septicaemia varies in the different reports. The clinical features of septicaemia due to anaerobic Gram-negative rods vary little from those due to facultative anaerobic Gram-negative rods. The entry portal of bacteroides and clostridia is the gastrointestinal tra

Beta-lactamase activity in anaerobic bacteria.

A diverse group of anaerobic bacteria representing a spectrum of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics was studied to characterize their beta-lactamase activity and relate it to resistance. The Bacteroides fragilis organisms had moderate resistance and produced a cephalosporinase with low activity. The Clostridium ramosum was intermediate in resistance and had intermediate, inducible beta-lactamase activity. The B. clostridiiformis organism was highly resistant, produced a potent inducible penicillinase, and had a barrier to the penicillin substrates. Only the beta-lactamase of C. ramosum fit

[Anaerobic bacteria in chronic otitis media].

The work shows microbiological findings of the chronic pus inflammations of the middle ear, emphasising anaerobic bacteria. Samples 170 were examined. 38 patients were under 15 years-of age, and others were between 15 and 60 years-old. Aerobic bacteria were identified by using Cowan's and Steel's conventional methods and Manual's and Sutter's methods were used for identification of anaerobic bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria were found in 23.5% of the samples by improving their cultivation. Findings of cholesteatoma and polyp are the factors that damage aeration so the a good conditions for multipl

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteria.

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteria has assumed greater importance in recent years because of (1) an increase in recognition of the clinical significance of anaerobes, (2) a decrease in predictability of susceptibility patterns, (3) the appearance of new antimicrobial agents with variable activity against anaerobes, (4) an increase in use of and demand for susceptibility data by clinicians, and (5) the availability of a standardized reference and practical methods for susceptibility testing of anaerobes. The broth microdilution and broth disk-elution techniques are suita

Interactions between aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Many human infections are caused by a mixture of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, acting in a synergistic manner. In an animal model of intraabdominal sepsis, the coliforms were responsible for acute peritonitis, septicemia, and shock, while the anaerobes, particularly Bacteroides fragilis, caused the late complications of abscess formation. Clinical trials of antimicrobial agents in patients with mixed infections have affirmed the importance of the two microbial components. Effective drug regimens provide activity against both aerobic and anaerobic pathogens.

[Preventive drug therapy against anaerobic bacteria].

Anaerobic organisms can found normally in be normally major i.e. the upper airways, the gastrointestinal tract (beyond the caecum) and the female genital tract. Whereas the first group of microorganisms is usually sensitive to penicillin, the others are sensitive to clindamycin, metronidazole and chloramphenicol. An appropriate prophylactic regimen will have to comply with these microbiological data. Prophylactic antibiotics should be started during operation and should be given for a short period of time; their efficacy has been proved and confirmed, particularly in bowel surgery. Nevertheles

Mechanism of quinolone resistance in anaerobic bacteria.

Several recently developed quinolones have excellent activity against a broad range of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and are thus potential drugs for the treatment of serious anaerobic and mixed infections. Resistance to quinolones is increasing worldwide, but is still relatively infrequent among anaerobes. Two main mechanisms, alteration of target enzymes (gyrase and topoisomerase IV) caused by chromosomal mutations in encoding genes, or reduced intracellular accumulation due to increased efflux of the drug, are associated with quinolone resistance. These mechanisms have also been found in a

[Anaerobic bacteria as the cause of endogenous infections].

Most mucocutaneous surfaces of humans harbor a rich indigenous microbial flora with predominance of anaerobes. Anaerobic infections are usually endogenous indicating that they originate from the host's own flora. Important exceptions are botulism, tetanus, food poisoning by Clostridium perfringens, some cases of gas gangrene and cases of hospital-acquired C. difficile-induced diarrhea. Endogenous anaerobic infections often occur in adjacent to the mucosal surfaces. Other organs are infected by penetration or hematogenous spread. A predisposing condition to anaerobic infections is a low redox p

Bacteremia due to anaerobic bacteria in newborns.

Awareness of the role of anaerobic bacteria in neonatal bacteremia has increased in recent years. The incidence of recovery of anaerobes in neonatal bacteremia varies, according to different studies, between 1.8% and 12.5%. Of the 178 cases reported in the literature, 73 were due to Bacteroides species (69 were the Bacteroides fragilis group), 57 Clostridium species (mostly Clostridium perfringens), 35 Peptostreptococci, 5 Propionibacterium acnes, 3 Veillonella species, 3 Fusobacterium species, and 2 Eubacterium species. Susceptibility of anaerobic bacteria to antimicrobial agents.

The antimicrobial susceptibility of 1,117 clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria was determined by the agar dilution technique. Metronidazole was the most active agent; only Propionibacterium acnes and Actinomyces sp. isolates were resistant. Clindamycin and chloramphenical were the next most effective agents. Beta-lactam antibiotics, with the exception of penicillin, were active against most anaerobes other than the Bacteroides fragilis group. At a breakpoint of 8 mg/l, 25% of Fusobacterium spp. and 30% of the non-fragilis Bacteroides spp. were resistant to penicillin. The highest resistance
