Staphylococcus aureus strains have been continuously evolving resistance to numerous classes of antibiotics including methicillin, vancomycin, daptomycin and linezolid, compounding the enormous healthcare and economic burden of the pathogen. Cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton broth (CA-MHB) is the standard bacteriological media for measuring antibiotic susceptibility in the clinical lab, but the use of media that more closely mimic the physiological state of the patient, e.g. mammalian tissue culture media, can in certain circumstances reveal antibiotic activities that may be more predictive of ef

Biofilms are complex microbial communities that have a critical function in many natural ecosystems, industrial settings as well as in recurrent and chronic infections. Biofilms are highly heterogeneous and dynamic assemblages that display complex responses to varying environmental factors, and those properties present substantial challenges for their study and control. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing improved biofilm models to offer more precise and comprehensive representations of these intricate systems. However, an objective assessment for ascertaining the

A dataset of bacterial diversity found in mites was compiled from 193 publications (from 1964 to January 2015). A total of 143 mite species belonging to the 3 orders (Mesostigmata, Sarcoptiformes and Trombidiformes) were recorded and found to be associated with approximately 150 bacteria species (in 85 genera, 51 families, 25 orders and 7 phyla). From the literature, the intracellular symbiont Cardinium, the scrub typhus agent Orientia, and Wolbachia (the most prevalent symbiont of arthropods) were the dominant mite-associated bacteria, with approximately 30 mite species infected each. Wound colonization by bacteria is not always the same as invasive infection. Furthermore, the classic definition of infection does not always aid the clinician in determining whether a patient is in the process of developing life-threatening sepsis. Although research efforts have focused on identification and quantification of organisms involved, the predictive value of this variable is limited. Other variables, such as the nature of the organism, nature of the wound, and nature of the host's defense mechanisms must also be considered. For instance, large acute wounds have been found to react

In contrast to the universal power-law scaling observed in energy spectra of classical inertial turbulence, previous theoretical and experimental studies have revealed that active matter systems exhibit a pronounced system-specific dependence in their energy spectra. In this study, we experimentally investigate how cellular properties influence the kinetic energy spectra in bacterial monolayer swarms. We mapped a two-dimensional dynamical state diagram of bacterial swarming parameterized by cell area fraction and aspect ratio, with each state exhibiting distinct dynamical features. The scaling

The ability to use vesicles to deliver cargo safely across distance is a valuable strategy that appears to be universal across all life. The ability of prokaryotes to accomplish this is a relatively new idea, but one that is expanding rapidly. In this review, we will describe what bacterial extracellular vesicles (bEVs) are and where they come from. We will also summarize what has been learned about their biogenesis and function through foundational planktonic studies. Using this as a backdrop, we will then contextualize new and exciting discoveries made as the focus of the field has shifted t

The morphology and electron-microscopic anatomy of Leptospirae, the lack of the presence of leptospiral phages (and probably of bacteriocins), and the absence of phagocytosis as a defence mechanism in leptospirosis, indicate the non-bacteriologie character of this genus. Leptospirae form an evolutionary intermediate bridge between the worlds of bacteria and protozoa. In "Bergey's Manual" they are assigned to the world of bacteria for practical reasons; but it seems to be reasonable to stress more largely the "bacteriological" and "protozoologic" markers of Leptospirae, in the subsequent 9th ed

Anaerobic bacteria predominate in the normal human fecal flora, out-numbering aerobes at least 100 to one. The two most prevalent organisms are Bacteroides fragilis and Bifidobacterium. Ileostomy flora is, on the other hand, chiefly aerobic and the total count is lower (10(8) per ml of fluid, compared to 10(10) per gram for feces). In normal people, small bowel bacterial counts are generally 10(5) per ml or less. The upper small bowel consists primarily of Gram-positive aerobes in small numbers. In the terminal ileum, counts are higher and aerobes and anaerobes are present in equal numbers. In

Recent advances in microscopy techniques has uncovered unique aspects of flagella-driven motility in bacteria. A remarkable example is the discovery of flagellar wrapping, a phenomenon whereby a bacterium wraps its flagellum (or flagellar bundle) around its cell body and propels itself like a corkscrew, enabling locomotion in highly viscous or confined environments. For certain bacterial species, this flagellar-wrapping mode is crucial for establishing selective symbiotic relationships with their hosts. The transformation of a flagellum from an extended to a folded (wrapped) state is triggered

Microbes from diverse types of habitats are continuously exposed to external challenges, which may include acidic, alkaline, and toxic metabolites stress as well as nutrient deficiencies. To promote their own survival, bacteria have to rapidly adapt to external perturbations by inducing particular stress responses that typically involve genetic and/or cellular changes. In addition, pathogenic bacteria need to sense and withstand these environmental stresses within a host to establish and maintain infection. These responses can be, in principle, induced by changes in bacterial cell structure, m

Bacteria use membraneless compartments, or biomolecular condensates, to organize cellular processes in space and time. These condensates assemble and function within a highly constrained physical landscape shaped by a crowded cytoplasm, structured nucleoid, membrane surfaces, and distinct polar zones. In this review, we examine condensates involved in genome maintenance, RNA metabolism, cell division, signaling, and metabolic regulation, focusing on how cellular microenvironments and physiological state shape when and where these condensates form, which molecules they recruit, and the material

Rosacea is a chronic cutaneous disorder characterized by centrofacial persisting erythema, telangiectases, papules, pustules, edema, phymas and ocular involvement. Despite being one of the most common skin disorders, its pathogenesis remains unclear and controversial. Although the disease triggering factors are well recognized, the underlying causes of rosacea have not yet been identified. Several different postulates about its pathogenesis can be found in the medical literature. Abnormalities of the pilosebaceous unit, as well as genetic, vascular, inflammatory, environmental and microbial fa

At the heart of tackling the huge challenge posed by infectious micro-organisms is the overwhelming need to understand their nature. A major question is, why do some species of bacteria rapidly kill their host whilst others are relatively benign? For example, Yersinia pestis, the causative organism of plague, is a highly virulent human pathogen whilst the closely related Yersinia pseudotuberculosis causes a much less severe disease. Using molecular techniques such as mutating certain genes, microbiologists have made significant advances over recent decades in elucidating the mechanisms that go

Antony van Leeuwenhoek first described oral bacteria. However, not until almost 200 years later was the famous Koch postulate introduced. Since then, research has extensively been performed regarding the development and microbiology of dental plaques. In spite of the complexity of the developing flora of supragingival plaque, culture studies have shown a remarkably orderly succession of organisms. Lately, the concept of microbial specificity in the etiology of periodontal diseases has been widely suggested, i.e., that different forms of periodontal disease are associated with qualitatively dis

Foods of non-animal origin (FoNAO) are consumed in a variety of forms, being a major component of almost all meals. These food types have the potential to be associated with large outbreaks as seen in 2011 associated with VTEC O104. In order to identify and rank specific food/pathogen combinations most often linked to human cases originating from FoNAO in the EU, a semi-quantitative model was developed using seven criteria: strength of associations between food and pathogen based on the foodborne outbreak data from EU Zoonoses Monitoring (2007-2011), incidence of illness, burden of disease, do

The emergence of resistance in microorganisms on a global scale has made it necessary to search for new antimicrobial factors. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) seem to meet these expectations. AMPs are produced by bacteria, viruses, plants, and animals, and may be considered as a new class of drugs intended for the prophylaxis and treatment of both systemic and topical infections. The aim of this study is to review the results of studies on the use of peptides to combat infections in vivo. Antimicrobial peptides may be applied topically and systemically. Among the peptides used topically, a very

Bacterial biofilms are implicated in a wide range of implant-based and chronic infections. These infections are often associated with adverse therapeutic outcomes, owing to the decreased antibiotic susceptibility of biofilms compared with their planktonic counterparts. This altered biofilm susceptibility has been attributed to multiple factors, including a reduced antibiotic penetration. Although several studies have addressed the role of penetration barrier in biofilm-associated drug resistance, it remains inconclusive. This study was done to elucidate antibiotic penetration through biofilms

Bacterial persistence, a major clinical challenge in chronic and biofilm-associated infections, is driven by a dormant subpopulation capable of surviving antibiotic treatment without acquiring genetic resistance. This review summarizes recent advances supporting a unifying model in which phase-plastic aggresomes-protein-RNA condensates formed via liquid-liquid phase separation-function as tunable regulators of bacterial dormancy depth. We propose that the material state of aggresomes, ranging from liquid-like to gel-like, governs cellular recovery kinetics by modulating the sequestration and a
