Bacteriocins have the potential to effectively improve food-borne infections or gastrointestinal diseases and hold promise as viable alternatives to antibiotics. This study aimed to explore the antibacterial activity of three bacteriocins (nisin, enterocin Gr17, and plantaricin RX-8) and their ability to attenuate intestinal barrier dysfunction and inflammatory responses induced by Listeria monocytogenes, respectively. Bacteriocins have shown excellent antibacterial activity against L. monocytogenes without causing any cytotoxicity. Bacteriocins inhibited the adhesion and invasion of L. monocy

Lactobacilli are the most common probiotics used in food and other industries because of their capability of producing bacteriocins. Bacteriocins are compounds that are used to kill pathogenic microorganisms. As most bacteria have become resistant to synthetic antibacterial tools, the importance of using probiotics as antibacterial agents has increased. This work was done to check the bacteriocin effect on some common pathogens and the influence of mutation on the bacteriocin activity of Lactobacilli was also investigated. Four strains were isolated, identified from meat and pickles samples vi

Bacterial biofilms are resilient microbial communities that frequently contaminate food processing environments and show substantial resistance to conventional disinfectants and cleaning strategies. Bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides or proteins produced by bacteria, are increasingly recognized as promising natural interventions for biofilm control in the food industry. This review examines recent bacteriocin research, focusing on classification, structure, purification, stability, antimicrobial activity, applications, and regulatory considerations relevant to food systems. We also review th

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium causing listeriosis, a severe infection responsible for significant morbidity and mortality globally. Its persistence on food processing surfaces via biofilm formation presents a major challenge, as conventional sanitizers and antimicrobials exhibit limited efficacy against biofilm-embedded cells. This study investigates a novel approach combining an engineered polysaccharide-degrading enzyme (CAase) with a bacteriocin (thermophilin 110) produced by Streptococcus thermophilus. Laboratory assays evaluated the effectiveness of this combination

Intestinal microbiota exerts protective effects against the infection of various bacterial pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, a major foodborne pathogen whose infection can lead to a disease (listeriosis) with a high fatality rate. As a strategy to mitigate the action of the intestinal microbiota, pathogens often produce antimicrobial proteinaceous compounds such as bacteriocins. In this review, we summarize the information currently available for the well-characterized L. monocytogenes bacteriocin listeriolysin S, with the emphasis on its intriguing mode of action as a virulence fac

Superficial infections in chronic wounds can prevent the wound healing process by the development of persistent infections and drug-resistant biofilms. Topically applied antimicrobial formulations with stabilized and controlled release offer significant benefits for the effective treatment of wound infections. Bacteriocins are the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) produced by bacteria that are viable alternatives to antibiotics owing to their natural origin and low propensity for resistance development. Herein, we developed a hybrid hydrogel composed of Pluronic F127 (PF127), ethylenediaminetetraa

The hemolysin/bacteriocin produced by some strains of Enterococcus faecalis is active in the lysis of human, rabbit, and horse erythrocytes, but not those from sheep. In this study, we determined that 20% of clinical enterococcal isolates tested in the clinical microbiology laboratory produced hemolysin and that pathogenic human E. faecalis were more likely to be hemolysin-producing isolates. Among the organisms isolated from different anatomic sites, variability in the degree of hemolysin production existed. We used an isogenic pair of E. faecalis organisms to demonstrate that hemolysin produ

UNLABELLED: Bacteria use bacteriocins to kill competitors and shape microbial communities. Many bacteriocins are ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs), a diverse class of natural products and a source of new antimicrobials. The diversity of bacterial RiPPs stems from the combination of genetically encoded precursor peptides and biosynthetic proteins that post-translationally process the peptides. Characterized RiPP pathways involve soluble precursor peptides and biosynthetic proteins that modify them in the bacterial cytoplasm before secretion across the ce

Staphylococcus capitis is a member of the human and mammal skin microbiomes and is considered less harmful than Staphylococcus aureus. S. capitis subsp. urealyticus BN2 was isolated from a cat and expressed strong antibacterial activity against a range of Gram-positive species, most notably including S. aureus strains with resistance to methicillin (MRSA) and strains with intermediate resistance to vancomycin (VISA). These latter strains are normally relatively resistant to bacteriocins, due to cell wall and cell membrane modifications. Genomic sequencing showed that the strain harboured at le

The rapid development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has increased the quest of specific alternatives to the traditional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides that are ribosomally synthesized by bacteria under the name bacteria bacteriocins have received a lot of focus as precision antimicrobials because of their narrow spectrum activity, high potency, and lower probability of resistance development. The Lactobacillus species are of special interest among bacteriocin-producing microorganisms due to the lengthy record of safe application and its probiotic features and prominence in the human o

Klebsiella pneumoniae produces several kinds of bacteriocins that have antimicrobial effects against closely related species, but few studies have comprehensively reported bacteriocin distribution among the Klebsiella population. In this study, we identified bacteriocin genes in 180 K. pneumoniae species complex genomes, including 170 hypermucoviscous isolates, and investigated the antibacterial activity against 50 strains, including antimicrobial-resistant organisms, belonging to multiple species, namely, Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp., Enterobacter cl

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a serious health threat throughout the world resulting in reduced efficacy of antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, and antifungal drugs. One of the most promising concepts that may represent a good alternative to antibiotics can be the use of bacteriocins obtained from lactic acid bacteria. The L. rhamnosus BTK 20-12 strain was isolated from traditional Armenian naturally fermented salted cheese. The probiotic potential of the strain was approved. It was shown that strain produced at less two bacteriocins (BCN 1 and BCN 2) with different molecular weight (1427

Multiresistant Gram-negative bacteria are the prime mover of nosocomial infections. Some are naturally resistant to antibiotics, their genetic makes them insensitive to certain families of antibiotics and they transmit these resistors to their offspring. Moreover, when bacteria are subjected to antibiotics, they eventually develop resistance against drugs to which they were previously sensitive. In recent years, many bacteriocins active against gram-negative bacteria have been identified proving their efficacy in treating infections. While further investigation remains necessary before the pos

Enterococci are commensals of human and other animals' gastrointestinal tracts. Only making up a small part of the microbiota, they have not played a significant role in research, until the 1980s. Although the exact year is variable according to different geographical areas, this was the decade when vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were discovered and since then their role as causative agents of human infections has increased. Enterococcus faecium is on the WHO's list of "bacteria for which new antibiotics are urgently needed," and with no new antibiotics in development, the situation is

Chagas disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi represents a significant public health problem in Latin America, affecting around 8 million cases worldwide. Nowadays is urgent the identification of new antichagasic agents as the only therapeutic options available, Nifurtimox and Benznidazole, are in use for >40 years, and present high toxicity, limited efficacy and frequent treatment failures in the chronic phase of the disease. Recently, it has been described the antiparasitic effect of AS-48, a bacteriocin produced by Enterococcus faecalis, against Trypanosoma brucei and Le

Bacteriocins are underexplored yet promising candidates to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and enable targeted therapy due to their natural origin, abundance and narrow spectrum of activity. In this study, we used a collection of engineered DNA devices and cell-free gene expression (CFE) to rapidly produce combinations (cocktails) of bacteriocins comprising both linear and circular proteins. Other cocktails were designed to target a specific bacterial species by leveraging insights into bacteriocin pathways for cell envelope penetration. These tailored combinations eradicated bacteria ef

The use of bacteria as probiotics is in continuous development, thanks to their capacity to maintain or restore a host's natural microbiome by interference with and/or inhibition of other microorganisms mediated by antimicrobial peptide production such as bacteriocins. In the oral cavity, Streptococcus salivarius, a non-pathogenic and predominant oral species, is one of the major bacteriocin producers that is able to coexist in this environment and reduce the frequency of colonization of the main pathogens involved in upper respiratory tract infections. The aim of this study was to screen oral
