Bloodstream infection caused by Bacteroides denticanum, a close relative of Bacteroides pyogenes, misidentified by MALDI TOF- mass spectrometry.

Bacteroides pyogenes can cause infections in humans. We describe a case of bloodstream infection caused by Bacteroides denticanum that probably originated from a dog bite. MALDI-TOF MS misidentified this new species as B. pyogenes. Subsequent analysis using the 16S rRNA sequencing approach identified the species as B. denticanum.

Clinical importance of infections due to Bacteroides fragilis and role of antibiotic therapy.

Out of 200 infections due to Bacteroides fragilis occurring over a period of three years 133 were related to the intestinal tract, 55 to the genitourinary tract, and the remainder were in bedsores and ulcers; 56% occurred in patients undergoing major intestinal surgery.B. fragilis was isolated in pure culture from 56% of the infections. In mixed culture it was most commonly associated with Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Other anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 9% of the mixed cultures.Altogether 131 (65.5%) of the patients recovered without antibiotic therapy or further surgery, but 59

Resistance and Virulence Features of Bacteroides spp. Isolated from Abdominal Infections in Romanian Patients.

Anaerobic bacteria are predominant residents of the normal microbiota of the skin and mucous membranes but are also known to be associated with a number of human infections including peritonitis, appendicitis, abscesses, ulcers and wound infections. Herein, we investigate the antibiotic resistance profiles as well as the genetic support of antibiotic resistance and virulence determinants of anaerobic bacteria isolated from intra-abdominal infections. The study was performed on 198 Romanian patients from which different clinical samples were taken intra-operatory and sent for microbiological an

Prolonged Bacteroides pyogenes infection in a patient with multiple lung abscesses.

Bacteroides pyogenes is naturally found in the oral microbiome of cats and dogs and hence exposure, especially bites from these animals, is a major risk factor for human infections. B pyogenes is known to cause infections that persist despite antibiotic treatment and can have serious clinical outcomes. We present a novel case of complex lung abscesses associated with B pyogenes infection. A 55 year old man presents with a 3-month history of productive cough, night sweats, and 5 kg weight loss. An initial chest radiograph revealed mass-like opacities in the right upper lobe (RUL), right middle

Protective immunization against experimental Bacteroides (Porphyromonas) gingivalis infection.

The effects of immunization in modulating the pathogenesis of Bacteroides (Porphyromonas) gingivalis infection in a murine model system were examined. BALB/c mice were immunized by intraperitoneal injection with B. gingivalis ATCC 53977 (one injection per week for 3 weeks), or with a lithium diiodosalicylate (LIS) extract (one injection per week for 3 weeks), or with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; one intravenous or intraperitoneal injection) from this same strain. Two weeks after the final immunization, the mice were challenged by subcutaneous injection of B. gingivalis ATCC 53977. Mice immunized w

High early-life gut Bacteroides links to microbiome stability, resilience, and risk for childhood infections.

Early childhood events, up to the age of two, are critical for the development of the microbiome and balanced immunity later in life. We investigated whether susceptibility to infections and microbiome resilience after antibiotic treatment are associated with key taxa in the early childhood microbiota. Therefore, we performed longitudinal microbiota analysis from stool samples of children within the German LoewenKIDS intensified subcohort. According to the exposure to antibiotic treatment, sample groups were defined as never-treated controls, 45-225 days pre-treatment (pre45-225), 0-30 days pr

Epidemiological characteristics of infections caused by Bacteroides, Prevotella and Fusobacterium species: a prospective observational study.

In order to investigate differences among infections due to Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria (Bacteroides, Prevotella and Fusobacterium spp.), clinical, epidemiological, and microbiological data were collected and evaluated from 206 anaerobic infections. The most frequently isolated species was Bacteroides fragilis. The majority of the cases were intra-abdominal infections (49%) followed by skin and soft tissue infections (24.7%). Logistic regression analysis showed that Bacteroides spp. strains were more often isolated from intra-abdominal infections (p = 0.002), whereas Prevotella spp. were

Hemorrhagic bullae caused by Bacteroides fragilis in a patient with intra-abdominal infection.

Skin manifestations due to intra-abdominal infection are uncommon but could be a warning sign of severe infection. We report a 58-year-old uremic female who had acute cholecystitis and pneumatosis intestinalis. She developed periumbilical hemorrhagic bullae and finally had a fatal outcome with medical therapy. Severe intra-abdominal infection such as pneumatosis intestinalis should be suspected when periumbilical bullae increase in size.

Rupture of a gravid bicornuate uterus in a primigravida associated with clostridial and bacteroides infection.

The case is presented of a primigravid patient with spontaneous rupture of a bicornuate uterus associated with significant anaerobic infection. Thinning of the myometrium at the site of the rupture was noted in the pathologic specimen. The anaerobic infection, primarily contained in the intact amniotic sac, resolved with total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, pelvic drainage and antibiotic therapy.

Description of eight human infections caused by Bacteroides pyogenes in a tertiary hospital of northern Spain.

Bacteroides pyogenes is a Gram-negative obligate anaerobe, saccharolytic, non-motile, non-pigment-producing and non-spore-forming rod. Reports of human infections caused by B. pyogenes are scarce, with approximately 30 cases documented in scientific literature. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of 8 different patients and to study the in vitro antibiotic susceptibility of the strains, as well as to evaluate the in vivo activity of the prescribed treatments. We conducted a descriptive retrospective study by searching all B. pyogenes isolates from January 2010 to

Bloodstream infection caused by Bacteroides caccae in a patient with renal hypertension: a case report.

Bacteroides caccae is an anaerobic bacterium with a reportedly high isolation rate; however, it rarely causes bloodstream infections. Patients with hypertension are at increased risk of developing anaerobic bacterial infection. In this study, we report a case of bacteremia caused by B. caccae in a patient with renal hypertension and gastrointestinal hemorrhage. This study describes the clinical manifestations of bloodstream infection involving B. caccae to provide guidance for laboratory technicians and clinicians. A 42-year-old Chinese man was admitted for gastrointestinal hemorrhage and subs
