The first examination was performed at 4-6 weeks of age, from January 1, 2002 to December 3, 2011. Data were collected on the type and incidence of each of ROP, birth weight, and age. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 1795 premat

Campaign to control genetic blood diseases in Bahrain.

UNLABELLED: Genetic blood diseases are frequent in Bahrain as in all Middle Eastern countries. Previous neonatal screening in 1984-1985 showed that the birth prevalence of sickle cell disease (SCD) was 2.1%, of sickle cell trait 11% and of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency 25%. The Ministry of Health recognized the importance of controlling these diseases. In 1984, the first genetic clinic was established, which started the educational campaigns. Information booklets were prepared and distributed widely in schools and clubs in an attempt to increase awareness about these dise

Trichomoniasis in birds of prey (order Falconiformes) in Bahrain.

Of 5360 falcons examined at the Sulman Falcon Hospital in Bahrain between 1987 and 1993, 1675 (31.2 per cent) had lesions of trichomoniasis. These lesions were commonly found in the oral and nasal cavities, the infraorbital sinuses, the crop and oesophagus and, more rarely, in the coelomic cavity, attached to the wall of the abdominal air sacs, and in the trachea, partially obstructing its lumen. Several therapeutic methods and the results obtained are described.

This patient's dysmorphic features include a prominent forehead, bulbous nasal tip, macroglossia, deep-set eyes, and malar hypoplasia. This patient also showed signs of intellectual disability and behavioral abnormalities such as night terrors. These findings are consistent with tho

Epidemiological Investigation of Peste des Petits Ruminants in Bahrain.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary disease that affects small ruminants and impacts livestock production and trade. This study investigated the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of PPR in sheep, goats, camels, and wild ruminants in Bahrain. A total of 1240 sheep, 1224 goats, 100 camels, and 38 wild ruminants were tested using competitive ELISA. The individual seroprevalence rates were 26% in sheep and 25.5% in goats, with flock/herd-level prevalences of 22.7% and 29.6%, respectively. No antibodies were detected in camels or wild ruminants. The highes

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease in Bahrain: Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes.

Background Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) refers to a group of conditions linked to abnormal growth of trophoblastic tissue following conception. Although uncommon, early detection of GTD is vital due to the potential for progression and serious complications. The prevalence and presentation of GTD vary by region. In Bahrain, there are limited data on GTD, its risk factors, and clinical outcomes within the Bahraini population. Objectives To investigate the frequency, associated risk factors, and clinical outcomes of GTD among women in the Kingdom of Bahrain and to compare the findings

Genetically Confirmed Wilson Disease: A Retrospective Cohort Study From Bahrain.

Introduction Wilson disease (WD) is a rare inherited autosomal recessive disorder caused by a mutation in the ATP7B gene. This mutation affects copper metabolism, leading to the accumulation of copper in the liver, brain, cornea, and other tissues. If not treated, WD can lead to significant morbidities. This study aimed to display the prevalence, clinical presentations, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of WD in Bahrain. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with WD in the Department of Pediatrics, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, from March 2

IgG4-Related Disease, the Malignancy Mimicker: Case Series from Bahrain.

IgG4-related disease is an evolving immune-mediated condition. The hallmark of this condition is IgG4(+) plasma cells infiltration of the affected organs accompanied by a variable degree of fibrosis and occasionally elevated serum IgG4 level. It links many conditions that were once recognized as isolated unrelated idiopathic single organ disorders (e.g., autoimmune pancreatitis, Mikulicz syndrome, and retroperitoneal fibrosis) under one umbrella. It usually presents clinically as tumor-like swelling of the involved organs that can be misdiagnosed as neoplasia. In this case series, we present f

Toward measles elimination in Bahrain--a Middle East country experience.

Measles was a leading cause of infant and child morbidity and mortality in Bahrain before the introduction of measles vaccine in 1974. With the establishment of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in 1981 and the introduction of a second dose of measles vaccine in 1985, coverage for first and second doses of measles vaccine increased to 94% by 1997 and has been sustained >97% since 2001. Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunization campaigns targeting 12-year-old students were conducted annually during 1998-2006 and achieved coverage of >95%. As a result, the incidence of measles in B

Alkaptonuria: Clinical Spectrum of a Diagnosed Case in Bahrain With a Literature Review.

Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare metabolic condition caused by mutations within a gene coding for homogentisate 1,2 dioxygenase enzyme involved in the tyrosine catabolism pathway. This mutation will result in the accumulation of homogentisic acid (HGA) in the body. AKU is a multi-systemic slowly progressing disease. The onset of its clinical presentation may vary based on the extensive disposition of the HGA. Initially, it might be asymptomatic, and symptoms usually appear in the second or third decades due to the formation of HGA, melanin compounds that accumulate in the cartilage leading to ochr
