Pennella balaenoptera actively select injured cetacean skin as attachment sites, making them potentially useful forensic tags.

Cetaceans harbor multiple epibionts on their external surface, and these attach to particular microhabitats. Understanding what drives the selection of attachment sites is relevant for refining the use of epibionts as indicators of their hosts. We report on about 100 females of the mesoparasitic copepod Pennella balaenoptera attached to a dead Cuvier's beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris stranded in Tunisia (western Mediterranean); the first report of P. balaenoptera in this country. The copepods were exclusively attached to numerous incisive, likely anthropogenic, wounds found on the host's skin

Meningoencephalitis in a common minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata associated with Brucella pinnipedialis and gamma-herpesvirus infection.

Fatal marine Brucella infections with histologic lesions specific to the central nervous system (CNS), known as neurobrucellosis, have been described in 5 species of odontocete cetaceans in the UK: striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, Atlantic white-sided dolphins Lagenorhynchus acutus, short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis, long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas and Sowerby's beaked whale Mesoplodon bidens. To date, these CNS lesions have only been associated with Brucella ceti ST26 and not with B. pinnipedialis, which is rarely isolated from cetaceans and, although commonly f

Distribution of microbiota across different intestinal tract segments of a stranded dwarf minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata.

Marine mammals are an important part of ocean ecosystems, of which, whales play a vital role in the marine food chain. In this study, the mucosa and contents from different intestinal tract segments (ITSs) of a stranded dwarf minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) were analyzed. The gut microbiota were sequenced using high-throughput sequencing technology, based on a 16S rRNA approach. The microbial composition of the intestinal mucosa and its contents were similar in every single ITS. Large intestine microbiota richness and diversity were significantly higher when compared to the duodenum a

Complete mitochondrial genomes of Diplogonoporus balaenopterae and Diplogonoporus grandis (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) and clarification of their taxonomic relationships.

Although the diplogonadic human tapeworm, Diplogonoporus grandis, has long been considered to be a synonym of the whale tapeworm, Diplogonoporus balaenopterae, the identity of the both species at the complete mitochondrial genomes and nuclear DNA levels has been not sufficiently undertaken to date. In the present study, to clarify the taxonomic relationships between D. balaenopterae and D. grandis at the molecular level, the complete mitochondrial genomes of both species were sequenced and compared. In addition, the genetic variation in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (co

Opportunistic Feeding and Parasite Assemblages in Sei Whales (Balaenoptera borealis) From Southern Chile Revealed by DNA Metabarcoding.

Balaenopterid whales are major consumers in pelagic ecosystems and play a fundamental role in marine food webs. The sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) is a broadly generalist species that remains among the least studied baleen whales. In this study, we characterized diet composition and parasite assemblage in five stranded sei whales in southern Chile using DNA metabarcoding of stomach and intestinal contents. Four main prey categories were detected among the five individuals, with marked inter-individual variations. Grimothea spp. occurred in all whales and dominated prey-derived reads in the

Localization of peptide hormones in the placentas of Bryde's (Balaenoptera brydei), sei (B. borealis), and common minke (B. acutorostrata) whales.

In this study, we examined the morphological features of the placentas from 3 species of rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae), namely Bryde's (Balaenoptera brydei), sei (B. borealis), and common minke (B. acutorostrata) whales, and verified the secretion of 2 placental-specific peptide hormones, placental lactogen (PL) and chorionic gonadotropin (CG). The placentas were collected in the second phase of the Japanese Whale Research Program under a special permit in the North Pacific (JARPN II) between 2009 and 2010. For all three species of rorqual whales, as the fetus grew, the interdigitation betw

Raw Whitebait as a Probable Source of Human Diplogonoporus balaenopterae Infection in Non-Coastal Area: A Case Report.

We describe a case of a man in his late 20s who presented with symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal pain, and passage of string-like materials following the consumption of raw whitebait. Stool analysis was negative for eggs and parasites. However, a worm segment corroborated by subsequent genetic sequencing confirmed infection with Diplogonoporus balaenopterae. Treatment with praziquantel led to complete resolution of symptoms without recurrence. This case demonstrates that marine tapeworm infections can occur even in non-coastal regions. This is likely due to the widespread availability of fresh s

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis sp. in the meat of common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata): A case of suspected food poisoning in Japan.

A case of suspected food poisoning related to the consumption of raw meat from a common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) was reported in Tokyo, Japan, in June 2020. Microscopic analysis revealed tissue cysts of Toxoplasma gondii and sarcocysts of Sarcocystis sp. in whale meat. The SAG2 and ITS1 region sequences of T. gondii were detected in the DNA extracted from the meat. Genotyping of the multilocus nested PCR-RFLP using the genetic markers SAG1, SAG2 (5'- SAG2, 3'-SAG2, and alt. SAG2), SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and Apico revealed that the genotype of T. gondii was t

A framework for passive acoustic localization and tracking using a wide-baseline array demonstrated with Rice's whales (Balaenoptera ricei).

Passive acoustic localization and tracking provide valuable information for characterizing the behavior of marine mammals. When using time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) localization on a wide-baseline array, certain factors such as stereotyped vocalizations from multiple callers and sparse array configuration, can make the call association problem challenging. A "track-before-detect" localization and tracking framework is presented in which this challenge is addressed by taking a hard-association approach and performing the tracking in the TDOA domain. The framework is demonstrated on low-frequ

Osteo-pathological analysis provides evidence for a survived historical ship strike in a Southern Hemisphere fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus).

The life history of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) caught during whaling operations in the 1950s was partly reconstructed. 3D surface models of the bones of the skeleton curated at the Zoological Museum of Hamburg were used for an osteopathological analysis. The skeleton revealed multiple healed fractures of ribs and a scapula. Moreover, the processus spinosi of several vertebrae were deformed and arthrosis was found. Together, the pathological findings provide evidence for large blunt trauma and secondary effects arising from it. Reconstruction of the likely cause of events suggests coll

Molecular and morphological characterization of Bolbosoma balaenae (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), a neglected intestinal parasite of the fin whale Balaenoptera physalus.

Post-mortem examination of a fin whale Balaenoptera physalus stranded in the Mediterranean Sea led to the finding of Bolbosoma balaenae for the first time in this basin. In this work, we describe new structural characteristics of this parasite using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy approaches. Moreover, the molecular and phylogenetic data as inferred from both ribosomal RNA 18S-28S and the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 (cox1) for adult specimens of B. balaenae are also reported for the first time. First case of Shewanella indica isolated from a Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) stranded in the northern Beibu Gulf, China.

The purpose of this study was to culture and characterise bacteria from an intact abscess on the skin of a dead Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) which stranded in the northern Beibu Gulf, China. To grow bacteria, samples from the abscess were added to blood agar. After incubation, yellowish mucous colonies were visualized. The bacterium was firstly recognised as Shewanella algae by the VITEK® 2 System. However, by using 16S rRNA gene sequencing the bacterium was finally identified as S. indica. To characterise the bacterium, antibiotic susceptibility and virulence factors, such as hemolysis

Different transformations underlie blowhole and nasal passage development in a toothed whale (Odontoceti: Stenella attenuata) and a baleen whale (Mysticeti: Balaenoptera physalus).

Reorientation of the nasal passage away from the anteroposterior axis has evolved rarely in mammals. Unlike other mammals, cetaceans (e.g., whales, dolphins, and porpoises) have evolved a "blowhole": posteriorly repositioned nares that open dorsad. Accompanying the evolution of the blowhole, the nasal passage has rotated dorsally. Neonatal cetaceans possess a blowhole, but early in development, cetacean embryos exhibit head morphologies that resemble those of other mammals. Previous workers have proposed two developmental models for how the nasal passage reorients during prenatal ontogeny. In

Endoparasitic Insights of Free-Living Fin (Balaenoptera physalus), Humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis) from Eastern Canadian Waters.

PURPOSE: To date, little is still known on parasite infections affecting free-living large whale populations worldwide. Data presented should be considered as a baseline study for future monitoring surveys on endoparasites affecting whales, thereby enhancing investigations on impacts of zoonotic parasitoses not only on vulnerable or endangered baleen whale population health but also on public health. METHODS: The presented study is a first report on gastrointestinal parasites infecting different free-living baleen whales inhabiting East Canadian waters using non-invasive methods. Individual f

Endoparasite survey of free-swimming baleen whales (Balaenoptera musculus, B. physalus, B. borealis) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) using non/minimally invasive methods.

A number of parasitic diseases have gained importance as neozoan opportunistic infections in the marine environment. Here, we report on the gastrointestinal endoparasite fauna of three baleen whale species and one toothed whale: blue (Balaenoptera musculus), fin (Balaenoptera physalus), and sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) from the Azores Islands, Portugal. In total, 17 individual whale fecal samples [n = 10 (B. physalus); n = 4 (P. macrocephalus); n = 2 (B. musculus); n = 1 (B. borealis)] were collected from free-swimming animals as part of ongoing

Molecular diagnosis of diphyllobothriasis in Spain, most presumably acquired via imported fish, or sojourn abroad.

Human diphyllobothriasis is sporadically detected in Spain. Diphyllobothrium latum and Diplogonoporus balaenopterae have been identified. In the study, four cases of presumably imported diphyllobothriasis in Spanish patients were appraised. Molecular diagnosis allowed us to identify 'exotic' fish tapeworms such as Diplogonoporus balaenopterae in one patient and Diphyllobothrium pacificum in the others.

Pathological and serological evidence of Brucella-infection in baleen whales (Mysticeti) in the western North Pacific.

Abnormal testes and uterus were observed in 13 males (33%) and one female (3%) out of 40 common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the western North Pacific. Similar lesions were found in testis and ovary, respectively, in one male (2%) and female (2%) out of 43 Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera edeni) in the western North Pacific. Grossly, granular lesions with caseation and calcification were main pathological signs, and they were restricted to reproductive organs of mature whales. Chronic purulent or granulomatous orchitis was observed by microscopic analysis. Antibodies to Brucella sp

Chromosome-Level Genome Assembly of Eden's Whale Clarifies the Taxonomy and Speciation of Bryde's Whale Complex.

Eden's whale (Balaenoptera edeni), a poorly understood baleen cetacean, has long been shrouded in taxonomic ambiguity due to limited genomic resources, obscuring its distinction from closely related species and its position within the cetacean Tree of Life. In this paper, we present a high-quality chromosomal-level genome of B. edeni and conduct comparative genomic analyses to address long-standing taxonomic confusion and elucidate speciation of balaenopterids. Our phylogenomic analysis and demographic reconstruction reveal that B. edeni is a distinct sister to Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera bryd
