Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile, commonly known as desert date, is a multipurpose medicinal plant widely used in traditional African and Middle Eastern medicine. Various parts of the plant, particularly the seeds and fruit, are used to treat infections, gastrointestinal disturbances, parasitic diseases, and inflammation. Its rich composition of bioactive compounds suggests a potential role in managing microbial infections in veterinary contexts, including poultry farming. The current study aimed to evaluate the in vitro biological activities and for the first time the in vivo antimicrobial ef

Examination of crude methanol extracts of four Sudanese plants (Azadirachta indica, Acacia nilotica, Balanites aegyptiaca and Allium sativa) revealed that only three species had a considerable in-vitro anti-leishmanial activity on Leishmania major promastigotes. The plants Azadrachta indica, Allium sativa, and Acacia nilotica gave a LC50 of 10.2, 4.94, and 89.38 microg/ml, respectively. Extracts of Balanites aegyptiaca had a moderate biological activity on L major promastigotes.

The surgical management of a patient with 180-degree penile torsion, balanitic hypospadias, and chordee is presented. Complete resolution of the torsion was effected by completely reflecting the penile skin. Correction of the penile curvature was accomplished simultaneously by freeing the corpora spongiosa from the corpora cavernosa.

BACKGROUND: Although there is a wide use of wild edible plants (WEPs) in Ethiopia, very little work has so far been done, particularly, in the Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia, to properly document the associated knowledge. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to document knowledge and analyze data related to the use of wild edible and nutraceutical plants in Raya-Azebo District of Tigray Region. The district was prioritized for the study to avoid the further loss of local knowledge and discontinuation of the associated practices because of the depletion of wild edible plants in the area

The sandfly Phlebotomus orientalis Parrot (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the vector of visceral leishmaniasis in eastern and Upper Nile regions of Sudan, where vector infection rates of over 7% have been reported. Sugars are known to be important for development of the parasite and for increasing the survival and oviposition rates of several species of sandflies. In the present study we have analysed the sugars present in the guts of individuals and groups of male and female P. orientalis and compared these with sugars from several potential local plant sources: Acacia seyal, Balanites aegyptiaca a

Fishing with the aid of poisonous plants was formerly very common in Africa. Today this easy and simple method of fishing is forbidden but still practised in remote areas. The poisonous ingredients are pounded and thrown into a pool or dammed sections of a small river. After a time which varies according to conditions the fish begin to rise to the surface of the water and can readily be taken by hand. In general, the fish can be eaten without problems. 325 fish-poisoning plants, spread among 71 plant families with 183 genera, are presented. The closely related groups of Caesalpiniaceae, Mimosa

The dictum, "There is nothing new in surgery not previously described", is particularly true of hypospadias. The major significance of chordee was fully appreciated by Galen in the second century A. D. and then almost forgotten until Mettauer in 1842, all previous surgeons overstressing the position of the orifice. Mettauer recognised skin shortening as a cause of chordee, a fact not re-discovered until 1967. Urethroplasty from penile skin in situ was well described by Thiersch in 1869 and Duplay in 1874; additional covering skin flaps were developed in 1892 by Lauenstein. The modern enthusias

A literature review is provided on the state of knowledge of the ecology and control of the sand fly vectors of Leishmania donovani in East Africa, with a special emphasis on Phlebotomus orientalis. Visceral leishmaniasis caused by L. donovani is a major health problem in several areas in East Africa. Studies conducted in the past 70 years identified P. orientalis Parrot and P. martini Parrot as the principal vectors of L. donovani in Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya and P. celiae Minter as the secondary vector of the parasite in one focus in Ethiopia. Findings on sand fly fauna and other circumstant

Parasitic diseases such as trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis pose significant health challenges in Africa. The Senegalese Pharmacopoeia, known for its many medicinal plants with anti-infectious properties, can be a source of antiparasitic natural products. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antiparasitic activities of 33 methanolic extracts from 24 ethnopharmacologically selected plants against Trypanosoma brucei brucei (Tbb) and Leishmania mexicana mexicana (Lmm), as well as their cytotoxic activities on WI-38 cells. The most promising plant species were Balanites aegyptiaca, Eucalyptu

The fruit of Bassia scoparia (L.) A. J. Scott [syn. Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad.], commonly known as mountain caviar, are traditionally consumed as both food and medicine. Oral administration of 65% aqueous ethanol mountain caviar extract (MCE, 125-250 mg/kg) significantly suppressed postprandial plasma triglyceride (TG) elevation in olive oil-loaded mice. Among isolated saponins, the principal saponin momordin Ic exhibited significant antihyperlipidemic effect at 20 mg/kg. HPLC quantitative analysis using charged aerosol detector revealed that momordin Ic accounted for 12.6% of the MCE. Mecha

Despite its importance as a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Sudan, the ecology of Phlebotomus orientalis is still poorly understood. The results of a ground-based survey and a geographical-information-system (GIS) study, carried out to investigate the environmental determinants of the distribution of P. orientalis in the wooded areas of the central savannah belt of Sudan, are described here. The survey, carried out in April-June 1996, consisted of a collection of sandflies over two consecutive nights at each of 44 study sites, using three CDC, miniature, light traps at each site. This study focused on documenting and evaluating the cercaricidal activity of medicinal plants used for schistosomiasis treatment in an endemic area in Ghana. Through semistructured questionnaires, personal interviews with herbalists in communities surrounding the Barekese dam in the Atwima-Nwabiagya district, where the disease is endemic, were carried out. Thirty medicinal plants distributed in 19 families were reported to be used for schistosomiasis treatment in the survey. Information on the plants, including scientific names, common names, families, and the used plant part were recorded. T

Schistosomiasis is a human parasitic disease caused by the Schistosoma species and is recognised in public health as second to malaria in terms of its socioeconomic impact on humans. Four local plants native to many tribes in Ghana and known for their medicinal properties against some diseases were assessed for their cercaricidal activity against Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. The plants, namely, Newbouldia laevis stem bark (NLSB), Spathodea campanulata stem bark (SCSB), Momordica charantia leaves (MCL), and Ocimum viride leaves (OVL), were extracted for their active metabolites using methanol
