What do we know about the Balkan endemic nephropathy and the uroepithelial tumors?

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a familial chronic tubulo interstitial disease with a slow progression to terminal renal failure, affects people living in the alluvial plains along the tributaries of the Danube River. One of its most peculiar characteristics is a strong association with upper urothelial cancer. An increased incidence of upper urinary tract (UUT) transitional cell cancer (TCC) was discovered among the inhabitants of endemic settlements and in families affected by BEN. In areas where BEN is endemic, the incidence of upper tract TCC is significantly higher, even 100 times, than

Determination of Aristolochic Acids in Vegetables: Nephrotoxic and Carcinogenic Environmental Pollutants Contaminating a Broad Swath of the Food Supply and Driving Incidence of Balkan Endemic Nephropathy.

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a slowly progressive interstitial fibrotic disease affecting numerous people living along the Danube River in the Balkan Peninsula, of which aristolochic acids (AAs) produced naturally in Aristolochia plants are key etiological agents. However, the exposure biology of the disease remains poorly understood. Initially, the high incidence of BEN in the Balkan Peninsula was thought to occur through ingestion of bread prepared from flour made with wheat grains comingled with the seeds of Aristolochia clematitis L., an AA-containing weed that grows abundantly in t

Penile Skin as a Rare Location of Melanoma in the Balkan Region: A Case Report.

Skin melanoma is very rarely found in the genital region. Additionally, out of all penile skin malignancies, melanoma is one of the rarest, with no cases reported before in the Balkan region. A 68-year-old male presented with atypical and irregular pigmented skin lesions on his left flank and penile shaft. After dermoscopy and radiological work-up, both lesions were completely excised, with pathological examination revealing a high-grade dysplastic nevus with nodular melanoma in the penile location. Wide re-excision was performed one month later, followed by skin reconstruction with a rotation

Let me know your name: a study of chigger mites (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) associated with the edible dormouse (Glis glis) in the Carpathian-Balkan distribution gradient.

Trombiculid mites were collected from the edible dormouse (Glis glis) within the Carpathian-Balkan distribution gradient of host species. Representatives of five genera (Leptotrombidium, Neotrombicula, Brunehaldia, Hirsutiella, Schoutedenichia) and 10 species of chiggers were discovered in the material, based on morphological and/or molecular data. Brunehaldia, new to the fauna of Greece, was recorded for the first time from the edible dormouse. Neotrombicula talmiensis was new to the fauna of Greece and Neotrombicula vulgaris was new to the fauna of North Macedonia. Successful amplification a

The presence of malignant ovine babesiosis in Bosnia and Herzegovina indicates a possible emerging risk for Balkan region.

Malignant ovine babesiosis or ovine babesiosis caused by Babesia ovis is an important hemoprotozoan tick-borne disease of sheep. After 70 years, a study was conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the geographical areas of Podrinje and Eastern Herzegovina, aiming to molecularly identify and determine the presence of B. ovis infection in the sheep population. From 2019-2021, a clinical and molecular study was conducted in 53 flocks, and 192 sheep were examined, divided into two groups: clinically suspected and asymptomatic sheep. The presence of B. ovis was confirmed by PCR in blood samples of

Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms reveal recurrent waves of speciation in niche-pockets, in Europe's most venomous snake.

Within the Balkan Peninsula, topographic and climatic agents have promoted biodiversity and shaped the speciation history of many ectotherms. Here, we targeted an iconic European reptile, the nose-horned viper species-complex (Vipera ammodytes), and explored its spatial and temporal evolution. We (i) utilized genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms to infer genetic structure and build a time-calibrated species-tree, and (ii) applied species distribution modelling with niche-divergence tests among major phylogenomic clades. Geographically structured genetic diversity was found. Cycles of re

Combustion-Derived Pollutants Linked with Kidney Disease in Low-Lying Flood-Affected Areas in the Balkans.

Tens of thousands of people in southern Europe suffer from Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), and four times as many are at risk. Incidental ingestion of aristolochic acids (AAs), stemming from the ubiquitousAristolochia clematitis(birthwort) weed in the region, leads to DNA adduct-induced toxicity in kidney cells, the primary cause of BEN. Numerous cofactors, including toxic organics and metals, have been investigated, but all have shown small contributions to the overall BEN relative to non-BEN village distribution gradients. Here, we reveal that combustion-derived pollutants from wood and co

Limitations and plausibility of the Pliocene lignite hypothesis in explaining the etiology of Balkan endemic nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a chronic, tubulointerstitial renal disease often accompanied by urothelial cancer that has a lethality of nearly 100%. INTRODUCTION: One of the many factors that have been proposed to play an etiological role in BEN is exposure to organic compounds from Pliocene lignite coal deposits via the drinking water in endemic areas. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate the role of the tenets of the Pliocene lignite hypothesis in the etiology of BEN in order to provide an improved understanding of the hypothesis for col

Health support for people on the move: a qualitative exploration of civil society organizations' roles and obstacles along the Balkan route.

BACKGROUND: People on the move (POTM) are individuals in ongoing migration processes, often facing significant health risks and structural barriers to equitable access to essential services despite international frameworks recognizing healthcare rights. Civil society organizations (CSOs) play a key role in addressing these gaps. This study examines CSOs' health support for POTM from the perspective of CSO workers, using the Balkan Route as a case study. METHODS: This qualitative study included CSO staff providing health-related support to POTM along the Balkan Route. Participants were recruit

Evidence for trans-border movement of rabies by wildlife reservoirs between countries in the Balkan Peninsular.

Rabies remains endemic in a number of reservoir species throughout southeast Europe. To investigate the relationship between rabies viruses within this region we have compared rabies virus nucleoprotein sequence data from a diverse panel of rabies samples from Bulgaria with available data from countries in the Balkan Peninsula. This analysis provides a first description of rabies isolates in Bulgaria and suggests that there is evidence for wildlife-mediated movement of rabies with countries to the west of Bulgaria including Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina but no evidence for a link with rabies f

Medical and Social Aspects of Syphilis in the Balkans from the mid-19th Century to the Interwar.

The current study presents some aspects of syphilis in the Balkan Peninsula from the 19th century until the Interwar. Ever since the birth of modern Balkan States (Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey and Serbia), urbanization, poverty and the frequent wars have been considered the major factors conducive to the spread of syphilis. The measures against sex work and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were taken in two aspects, one medical and the other legislative. In this period, numerous hospitals for venereal diseases were established in the Balkan countries. In line with the international diagnostic
