Development and validation of a patient-reported outcome tool to assess cancer-related financial toxicity in Italy: a protocol.

IntroductionFinancial toxicity (FT) is a well-recognised problem in oncology. US-based studies have shown that: (a) cancer patients have a 2.7 times risk of bankruptcy; (b) patients who declare bankruptcy have a 79% greater hazard of death; (c) financial burden significantly impairs quality of life (QoL) and (d) reduces compliance and adherence to treatment prescriptions. The aim of the project is to develop and validate a patient-reported-outcome (PRO) measure to assess FT of cancer patients in Italy, where, despite the universal health coverage provided by the National Health Service, FT is

Health correlates of recreational gambling in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have found high rates of alcohol use and abuse/dependence, depression, bankruptcy, and incarceration associated with recreational gambling. Despite growing rates of recreational gambling in older adults, little is known regarding its health correlates in this age group. The objective of this study was to identify health and well-being correlates of past-year recreational gambling in adults age 65 years and older, compared to adults age 18-64 years. METHOD: The Gambling Impact and Behavior Study surveyed by telephone a nationally representative sample of 2,417 adults.

Concurrent and predictive validity of the Addiction Severity Index in pathological gamblers.

This study evaluated psychometric properties of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) in 231 pathological gamblers. Internal consistency was similar to that reported in substance abusers, temporal stability was good, and convergent and discriminant validity was established with other indices of patient, collateral, and interviewer-rated reports. Predictive validity of most subscales was excellent when baseline composite scores were used to predict the utilization of relevant services or unemployment, probation/parole status, and bankruptcy one year later. Thus, the ASI may be a useful tool for as

[Gambling disorder in Japan].

Gambling disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent and recurrent problematic gambling behavior, associated with impaired functioning, reduced quality of life, and frequent divorce and bankruptcy. Gambling disorder is reclassified in the category Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the DSM-5 because its clinical features closely resemble those of substance use disorders, and gambling activates the reward system in brain in much the same way drugs do. Prevalence of gambling disorder in Japan is high rate because of slot machines and pachinko game are very popular in

Risk Factors for Gambling Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Gambling disorder is a common and problematic behavioral disorder associated with depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, bankruptcy, and high suicide rates. In the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), pathological gambling was renamed "gambling disorder" and moved to the Substance-Related and Addiction Disorders chapter to acknowledge that research suggests that pathological gambling and alcohol and drug addiction are related. Therefore, this paper provides a systematic review of risk factors for gambling disorder. Systematic searches of

Dynamic impacts of a catastrophic production event: the foot-and-mouth disease case.

In foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) free countries, the occurrence of an FMD outbreak is a rare event with potentially large economic losses. We explore the dynamic effects of an FMD outbreak on market variables and economic surplus taking into account the largely neglected issue of farm bankruptcy. Simulations are performed on a stylized agricultural economy, which is a net exporter before the outbreak. We find complex dynamic market effects when the farm credit market suffers from information imperfections leading to farm closure. Welfare effects are also dramatically altered. Domestic consumers

A display of hypomania in a depressed male in response to fluvoxamine.

The present report describes the behavioural and psychological changes in a 55-year-old depressed male who displayed hypomania after the use of fluvoxamine in addition to other antidepressant medications. The patient experienced his first major depressive episode after the bankruptcy of his company. When fluvoxamine was prescribed at a dose of 50 mg/day in addition to sulpiride at 150 mg/day and a 50 mg dose of trazodone before sleep seven months after admission, grinning and a violation of ward rules occurred repeatedly. The patient became verbally aggressive to the staff and addicted to gamb

The Cost and Financial Burden of Thyroid Cancer on Patients in the US: A Review and Directions for Future Research.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, thyroid cancer has been identified as a cancer type with a high degree of associated financial burden on patients, and survivors of thyroid cancer report higher rates of bankruptcy than those of other cancer types. However, the available literature on the financial burden of thyroid cancer has not yet been described. OBSERVATIONS: Estimates of the out-of-pocket costs of initial thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment range widely ($1425-$17 000) and are influenced by age, surgical treatment type, and health insurance coverage. The rates of patient-reported financial burd

Correlates of Attention in the Cingulate Cortex During Gambling in Humans.

People make decisions multiple times on a daily basis. However, some decisions are easier to make than others and perhaps require more attention to ensure a positive outcome. During gambling, one should attempt to compute the expected rewards and risks associated with decisions. Failing to allocate attention and neural resources to estimate these values can be costly, and in some cases can lead to bankruptcy. Alpha-band (8-12 Hz) oscillatory power in the brain is thought to reflect attention, but how this influences financial decision making is not well understood. Using local field potential

Potential impact of the financial crisis on outpatient hospital visits due to otorhinolaryngologic disorders in Crete, Greece.

The public health effect of financial crises has been emphasized in previous studies. In addition, a series of otorhinolaryngologic disorders and manifestations has been related to psychological factors in the literature. Such conditions include temporomandibular joint disorders, laryngopharyngeal reflux, chronic tinnitus, and vertigo. Focusing on the outpatient database records of a large hospital in Crete, Greece, the objective of this retrospective study was to explore possible occurrence variations within the prementioned otorhinolaryngologic morbidity which may be potentially attributed t

Three facts about private equity in the US hospital sector.

INTRODUCTION: Private equity (PE) ownership of US hospitals has grown over the past 25 years, attracting substantial academic and policy attention. Despite this interest, fragmented and incomplete transaction data have made it difficult to establish basic facts critical to an informed debate about PE's effects on hospitals, patients, and payers. METHODS: Using a harmonized, publicly available PE acquisition data set, supplemented with verified exit transactions, we identify PE ownership spells for all short-term acute care hospitals from 2000 to 2024. RESULTS: We identify 3 key facts: (1) PE

Negative decision outcomes are more common among people with lower decision-making competence: an item-level analysis of the Decision Outcome Inventory (DOI).

Most behavioral decision research takes place in carefully controlled laboratory settings, and examination of relationships between performance and specific real-world decision outcomes is rare. One prior study shows that people who perform better on hypothetical decision tasks, assessed using the Adult Decision-Making Competence (A-DMC) measure, also tend to experience better real-world decision outcomes, as reported on the Decision Outcomes Inventory (DOI). The DOI score reflects avoidance of outcomes that could result from poor decisions, ranging from serious (e.g., bankruptcy) to minor (e.

Micro and nanotechnologies: The little formulations that could.

The first publication of micro- and nanotechnology in medicine was in 1798 with the use of the Cowpox virus by Edward Jenner as an attenuated vaccine against Smallpox. Since then, there has been an explosion of micro- and nanotechnologies for medical applications. The breadth of these micro- and nanotechnologies is discussed in this piece, presenting the date of their first report and their latest progression (e.g., clinical trials, FDA approval). This includes successes such as the recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen (

Inequality and the health-care system in the USA.

Widening economic inequality in the USA has been accompanied by increasing disparities in health outcomes. The life expectancy of the wealthiest Americans now exceeds that of the poorest by 10-15 years. This report, part of a Series on health and inequality in the USA, focuses on how the health-care system, which could reduce income-based disparities in health, instead often exacerbates them. Other articles in this Series address population health inequalities, and the health effects of racism, mass incarceration, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Poor Americans have worse access to care than

Mitochondrial homeostasis collapse to cardiac remodeling: From mechanisms to novel targeted therapeutic avenues.

Myocardial remodeling is a common pathological process in various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and represents the heart's adaptive response to pressure or volume overload. However, prolonged myocardial remodeling often leads to a progressive decline in cardiac function, ultimately resulting in heart failure (HF). This process is primarily characterized by myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis, both of which are closely linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. Emerging research uncovers a pivotal orchestrator of this lethal transition: mitochondrial homeostasis. As the powerhouse of cardiomyocytes,
