The history of inguinal herniorrhaphy certainly presents some peculiar aspects. Until the 18th century this disease was studied with interest and found a place in the books of several important authors, but in practice it was treated by empiricists and barbers. We must recognize however that some of their surgical methods are still effective--mostly methods tending to preserve the spermatic cord. The 18th century brought forth new surgical treatments and surgeons like the Saxon Richter and Antonio Scarpa began to intervene in the matter. The latter illustrated this surgical and anatomical prob

Johannes Fatio was probably the first surgeon who systematically studied and treated surgical condition of children. Born in Basle in 1649, he never studied medicine at the university there but became a member of the barber's guild. Later he studied medicine and became a doctor of the University of Valence. He returned to Basle to practice surgery, midwifery and paediatric surgery. He wrote a number of medical books, but only one, The Helvetic Reasonable Midwife, still exists. In it he devotes a whole section to surgical afflictions of children. He describes ingenuous operations for such condi

Idiopathic clubfoot is one of the most common problems in paediatric orthopaedics. The treatment is controversial and continues to be one of the challenges in paediatric orthopaedics. The aim of this review is to assess the different methods of clubfoot treatment used over the years in light of the documentation present in the literature and art paintings from the antiquity to the end of the 19th century. The aim of this paper is to review all treatment methods of the clubfoot over the years that were proposed to provide patients a functional, pain-free, normal-looking foot, with good mobility

During the 1536 siege of Turin in northern Italy, a young French barber-surgeon abandoned the conventional treatment of battle-inflicted wounds, launching a revolution in military medicine and surgical techniques. Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) was born into a working-class Huguenot family in Laval, France, during an era when surgery was not considered a respectable profession. He rose from humble origins as a barber-surgeon, a low-ranked occupation in the French medical hierarchy, to become a royal surgeon (chirurgien ordinaire du Roi) serving 4 consecutive French monarchs. His innovative ideas an

From the late 15th century onwards, cutting for stones in patients' heads to cure mental illness was depicted in European art. The earliest and most famous painting of this kind is The Cure of Folly, painted by Jheronimus Bosch around the turn of the 15th to the 16th century. In general, these depictions are thought to relate to surgical as well as mental health practices of that time. However, it can be questioned whether barber surgeons or quacks cut for stones in patients' heads, and if they did not, what the meaning of Bosch's and other artists' paintings might be. Paintings from the 15th

Lithotomy, i.e. the surgical method of cutting for stone in the bladder, belongs to the oldest and, due to the high risk, most notorious operating techniques. Records of stone-cuttings date as far back as Ancient Greece. The first detailed description of the procedure and instrumentation of lithotomy is to be found by Celsus (1. century AD). The patient in the lithotomy position, the neck of the bladder is approached by a median incision of the perineum. Celsus is also the first to mention special stone-hooking instruments ("uncus") to aid in extracting the bladder-stones. Medico-historical de

Christian Wisbech (1801-1869) was medical superintendent of "Bergen civile Sygehus" during the period 1825-1848. Some of his annual reports have been published. The hospital had 56 beds. The permanent staff included one "spisemester" (caterer) and two "sygeopvartersker" (nurses). Christian Wisbech's medicine was based on strict scientific principles and pathological anatomy. A post-mortem was performed on the deceased. Other current trends in medical practice at that time were foreign to him. It is assumed that he was inspired by Giovanni Morgagni (1682-1771) and John Hunter (1728-1793). His t

What is the place of health practitioners at sea? What role does this officer occupy, straddling the fields of dietetics, prevention and minor traumatology? Four printed books (little used in the history of medicine and medical anthropology) will serve as guides: Letters from a surgeon to Mr. … shipowner on the subject of the plant-based diet proposed for seafarers (M. Poissonnier des Perrières, 1773), Advice to seafarers on their health (G. Mauran, 1786), Lessons on asphyxia or instructions on the assistance to be given to drowned persons and others asphyxiated (L.S.C. Sauvé, 1841) and Treati

Ancient cultures were as preoccupied with the aesthetics of appearance as individuals are today. Dermabrasion for skin resurfacing has been performed with salt, pumice, ground grains, bone, and horn. Chemical peels have been performed with acids, metals, botanical extracts, or animal fats. Tattoos, ear piercing, makeup, skin treatments, and massages have existed for the past 5000 years. According to history, when the rise of more complex societies brought an ever-increasing demand for cosmesis, perfumers, cosmetologists, barbers, and gentlewomen became pioneers, undertaking and developing the

For many years it has been the work of Buschke and Löwenstein that has justified calling the exophytic, locally destructive tumour of the anogenital mucosal surface 'giant condyloma of Buschke and Löwenstein' or GCBL. In order to investigate the early history of this rare disease we examined the writings of the barber-surgeon Wilhelm Fabry (1560-1634) who had a serious interest in dermatological disorders and their treatment. We analysed Fabry's 600 Latin case reports and identified the case of a 'monstrous penile tumour'. We then translated this text into English and compared it point by poin

In ancient India and Persia surgeons were highly respected and their operating skill with nose plastic and catatact couching is documented. In mediaeval Europe surgery was classified as a handicraft profession and belonged to the barbers guild with the soapcup as symbol, much inferior to the academic trained medical doctors. In war surgery leg amputation after shotwounds demanded great rapidity, since no anestetic but alcohol was available. In the 18th century surgeons becamea accepted as medical doctors e.g. John Hunter in London and OlofAcrel in Stockholm. A great step in the development of

UNLABELLED: Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine slow-growing tumors, often asymptomatic, that originate from embryonic neural crest cell. In the head and neck area, the most common location is the carotid body, followed, with decreasing frequency, in jugular, tympanic and vagal sites. Bilateral carotid body tumors are extremely rare.
AIM: To present the most important features of carotid body paragangliomas, illustrating the clinical characteristics, associated with a thorough analysis of the diagnostic imaging elements, but also the current therapeutic strategies, with respective anatomic

Although traditional uvulectomy, a procedure which consists of cutting away a part of the uvula, has been reported in several sub-Saharan African countries, in Maghreb and in Israel, epidemiological and anthropological data on this practice are rare. Severe complications may require hospitalization. The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of this traditional procedure in Niamey, capital of Niger, the incidence of its severe complications and the beliefs and practices related to it. By the age of 5, 19.6% of the children in our survey had undergone uvulectomy. Severe complications o

Berengario da Carpi (Jacopo Barigazzi) was born around 1460 in the small Italian town of Carpi near Modena. Berengario's father, Faustino, was a reputable barber-surgeon who initiated his son early into the art of anatomy and surgery. After his graduation from the University of Bologna in 1489, Berengario rapidly acquired an enviable reputation as a physician and surgeon following the successful treatment of several dignitaries, including Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Urbino who suffered a severe head injury in 1517. While professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Bologna, Berengario

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2019eng
PURPOSE: To compare radiologic bone ingrowth and the clinical outcomes of an open-construct (PEEK) (polyether ether ketone) suture anchor with those of a non-vented biocomposite suture anchor in patients with arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
METHODS: Sixty-nine patients were randomly allocated into 2 groups based on type of suture anchors used for rotator cuff repair; group 1: open-construct PEEK anchor (36 patients), group 2: non-vented biocomposite anchor (33 patients). The status of bone ingrowth into the anchor and the presence of cyst formation were evaluated at 6 months postoperatively

SYRINGES WITH A PISTON AND THEIR USE AS "CLYSTER ORICULARIUS" IN THE ANCIENT ROME: Syringes with a piston were already known in ancient times and have been mentioned as a device for spraying rose water (Philon of Byzantium, about 230 BC), and for fighting fires (Heron of Alexandria about 110 AD). Celsus mentions it several times in his grand opus "De Medicina" (1st century AD) in the treatment of purulent discharge from the ear and for removing foreign bodies from the external ear canal. He always calls it "clyster oricularius", i.e. ear syringe, even when he describes its use in applications

Introduction The role of separation surgery in managing symptomatic spinal metastases has been increasing in recent years, and it represents a crucial part of the definitive management of this condition. Methods We report on a series of seven patients treated at the National Cancer Institute in Mexico using minimally invasive approaches to perform transpedicular corpectomy. The goal was to obtain a margin of tumor-free tissue, enabling the completion of oncological treatment with radiotherapy. Results We collected data from six cases. The mean age was 61.2 years. Surgical outcomes were good in

The surgical management of spinal tumors has grown increasingly complex as treatment algorithms for both primary bone tumors of the spine and metastatic spinal disease have evolved in response to novel surgical techniques, rising complication rates, and additional data concerning adjunct therapies. In this review, we discuss actionable interventions for improved patient safety in the operative care for spinal tumors. Strategies for complication avoidance in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative settings are discussed for approach-related morbidities, intraoperative hemorrhage, wo

Background and Clinical Significance: Advanced pelvic organ prolapse (POP) associated with perineal herniation of pelvic and abdominal organs is a sporadic occurrence in gynaecological practice. Generally, POP affects up to 50% of multiparous women at some point during their lives. Advanced forms (grade III or IV) represent less than 10% of all cases, with severe grade IV prolapse occurring in fewer than 2% of patients. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 48-year-old nulliparous woman with no prior surgical history and no known medical conditions at presentation. The patient presented w
