The impact of bariatric surgery on obesity-related infertility and in vitro fertilization outcomes.

Obesity-related infertility is one of the most common problems of reproductive-age obese women who desire childbearing. The various types of bariatric surgeries have proved effective in controlling excessive weight gain, improving fertility, and preventing certain maternal and fetal complications in these women. This article summarizes the current evidence regarding the impact of bariatric surgery on obesity-related infertility and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. We have also attempted to draw conclusions about maternal and fetal risks and the benefits of bariatric surgery. Laparoscopic

Use of Weight Loss Medications in Patients after Bariatric Surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Weight regain after bariatric surgery is unfortunately a common occurrence. In this article, we have reviewed the data addressing this clinical problem focusing on pharmacological management of weight regain. RECENT FINDINGS: Data from several small, non-randomized, retrospective, and prospective studies provide evidence that a number of pharmacological options, both FDA approved and off-label, are effective in mitigating and managing weight regain after bariatric surgery. There is a suggestion that the optimal time to initiate weight loss medications may be at the time of

Pregnancy after Bariatric Surgery: A Nested Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Small for Gestational Age Babies in AURORA.

Bariatric surgery prior to pregnancy is a significant risk factor for small for gestational age (SGA) babies. This case-control study investigated differences between mothers delivering an SGA baby following bariatric surgery, compared to those delivering an appropriate for gestational age (AGA) baby. Out of 129 babies born to mothers in the AURORA cohort study, 25 were SGA (<10th percentile) and 97 were AGA (10th-90th percentile). Higher gestational weight gain (GWG) was significantly associated with decreased odds of SGA (aOR per kg 0.92, 95% CI 0.85-0.99). According to the Institute of Medi

Orthostatic intolerance and autonomic dysfunction following bariatric surgery: A retrospective study and review of the literature.

The prevalence and costs of the obesity epidemic and obesity-related conditions, including diabetes mellitus, is consistently increasing worldwide. Bariatric medicine is attempting to address this with weight loss and exercise programmes, and with increasing frequency, various forms of bariatric surgery. There has been considerable success reported after bariatric surgery but not without. We describe 14 patients with orthostatic intolerance (OI) post bariatric surgery. We report on OI (postural dizziness, palpitations and fainting), the results of cardiovascular autonomic testing and the assoc

Bariatric surgery in the super-super morbidly obese: outcome analysis of patients with BMI >70 using the ACS-NSQIP database.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery offers patients short- and long-term benefits to their health and quality of life. Currently, we see more patients with superior body mass index (BMI) looking for these benefits. Evidence-based medicine is integral in the evaluation of risks versus benefit; however, data are lacking in this high-risk population. OBJECTIVES: To assess the morbidity and mortality of patients with BMI ≥70 undergoing bariatric surgery. SETTING: University Hospital, Bronx, New York, United States using national database. METHODS: Using the American College of Surgeons-National Surgi

Results of bariatric surgery.

Overweight and obesity are rapidly growing to epidemic proportions in the United States and globally. Since sustainable weight loss is only achieved by bariatric surgery, medicine has seen an explosion in the diversity and number of bariatric procedures performed over the past few years. Systematic studies of postoperative outcomes and investigations into the physiology and biology of weight loss provide a more comprehensive understanding of the sequelae of bariatric surgery. Adipose tissue is the predominant site of fat stores. Increasing obesity results in an overload of lipids within the bo

Long-Term Post-Bariatric Surgical Outcomes for Aeromedical Certification Consideration.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity represents a growing concern in the aviation environment due to its association with cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and obstructive sleep apnea, conditions that may compromise aeromedical certification and long-term medical fitness for flight duties. Although bariatric surgery (BS) effectively reduces obesity-related comorbidities, its long-term implications for pilots remain insufficiently characterized from an aeromedical perspective. This systematic review evaluates long-term health outcomes following BS relevant to flight personnel performance, safety, and

The Experience and Complications of Lipoabdominoplasty for Chinese Post-bariatric Population.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of bariatric surgeries in China has led to a growing number of patients experiencing massive weight loss and abdominal skin laxity. However, there is a scarcity of reports addressing post-bariatric lipoabdominoplasty in these patients. This study aims to present our clinical experiences with lipoabdominoplasty in post-bariatric patients in China. METHODS: We performed lipoabdominoplasty on patients who had abdominal skin laxity following bariatric surgery between March 2018 and October 2023. The procedure encompassed abdominal liposuction, plication of th

Postmortem evaluation of deaths in individuals with a history of bariatric surgery: autopsy and histopathological findings.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery effectively treats morbid obesity, but postoperative deaths may present diagnostic and medicolegal challenges. Determining whether death is related to surgery often requires combined interpretation of autopsy and histopathological findings. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate autopsy and histopathological findings in deaths occurring in individuals with a history of bariatric surgery and to assess their contribution to determining the cause of death and its relationship to bariatric surgery. METHODS: This retrospective autopsy-based case series included medicolega

Short- and long-term surgical follow-up of the postbariatric surgery patient.

Follow-up of the large numbers of patients undergoing bariatric surgery poses problems for surgical programs and for internists who care for morbidly obese patients. Early surgical follow up is concentrated on the perioperative period to ensure healing and care for any surgical complications. It is especially important to treat persistent vomiting to avoid thiamine deficiency. Subsequently, monitoring weight loss and resolution of comorbidities assumes more importance. Identification and management of nutritional deficiencies and other unwanted consequences of surgery may become the responsibi

Impact of multidisciplinary steatotic liver disease management on bariatric surgery referral and clinical outcomes: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle modifications aimed at weight loss are key to improving metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD); however, achieving substantial and sustained weight loss through non-surgical approaches may be difficult for some patients. Bariatric surgery should be considered as a therapeutic option in select patients with MASLD, but the national referral rate for eligible patients is low (< 1%). AIM: To examine referral rates and one-year outcomes among adults with MASLD in a multidisciplinary clinic integrating hepatology and obesity medicine. METHODS: We per

The impact of bariatric surgery on assisted reproductive technology outcomes: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with obesity are at higher risk of experiencing complications during their pregnancy and may also experience infertility, requiring assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to conceive. The current body of literature demonstrates that bariatric surgery decreases an individual's risk of developing a variety of obesity-related obstetrical conditions during and after pregnancy. However, the effects of bariatric surgery on ART outcomes are not well understood. Therefore, the paucity in the literature warrants a need to determine these effects. METHODS: We will search elect

Improvement of Limb Volumes After Bariatric Surgery in Nine End-Stage Primary, Secondary, and Obesity-Induced Lymphedema Patients: A Multiple Case Report.

Background: Lymphedema (LE) is a chronic condition of swelling due to lymphatic impairment and is characterized by edema and fibro-adipose tissue deposition. LE may be caused by an anomalous development of the lymphatic system, known as primary LE, or may develop secondary to traumatic, infectious, or other external events. Knowledge is increasing about the plural and bidirectional relationship between LE and obesity. The rate of obesity is increasing worldwide, and bariatric surgery offers the most effective and durable treatment, as this surgery exhibits positive effects on many obesity-rela

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty: From whence we came and where we are going.

The most effective and durable treatment for obesity is bariatric surgery. However, less than 2% of eligible patients who fulfill the criteria for bariatric surgery undergo the procedure. As a result, there is a drive to develop less invasive therapies to combat obesity. Endoscopic bariatric therapies (EBT) for weight loss are important since they are more effective than pharmacological treatments and lifestyle changes and present lower adverse event rates compared to bariatric surgery. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive EBT that involves remodeling of the greater cur

Post-bariatric hypoglycaemia: from altered gut physiology to targeted therapies.

Post-bariatric hypoglycaemia (PBH) is an increasingly recognised complication of bariatric and metabolic surgery, which can markedly impair quality of life and jeopardise the long-term benefits of surgery. This review summarises the current evidence on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management of PBH, with a particular focus on mechanism-based treatment strategies. We first point out the limitations of existing epidemiological data and then outline a practical diagnostic framework. We next review the evolving understanding of PBH as a heterogeneous, pathophysiology-driven syndrome aris

"Assessment of Knowledge and Perceptions of Bariatric Surgery and Its Complications Among Physicians Across Medical Specialties: A Questionnaire-Based Study from Palestine ".

BACKGROUND: With rising global obesity rates and an increasing number of bariatric procedures, physician awareness and understanding of bariatric surgery are critical for optimizing patient care and ensuring timely referrals. In Palestine, however, this topic remains underexplored, underscoring the need for context-specific data. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess knowledge and perception gaps regarding Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) and its complications among Palestinian healthcare professionals-including specialists and residents-across both public and private sectors. Bariatric surgery-what the ophthalmologist needs to know.

The incidence of bariatric surgery is increasing due to obesity being one of our top public health challenges. As such, bariatric-related ophthalmic changes are a potentially new clinical area of knowledge, with increasing published evidence on post-bariatric complications experienced by patients and identified by clinicians. We reviewed the available literature and summarised the different complications and potential recommendations. A search strategy was conducted with PubMed, Cochrane, Medline, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine and DH-DATA databases to look for papers answering our
