Bartholin's abscess and cyst account for 2% of all gynaecological visits per annum. This article reviews the anatomy, epidemiology and pathophysiology of the Bartholin's gland. The management of Bartholin's abscess including antibiotic use in the early stage of the condition together with options for surgical intervention are discussed and in so doing the variation of clinical practice in other countries is considered. The use of the word catheter, carbon dioxide laser are compared with traditional surgical techniques of incision and drainage and marsupialisation. The outcomes of treatment par

BACKGROUND: Tumors arising from the Bartholin's gland are very rare; the majority are benign. As most instances of swelling in the Bartholin's gland area represent a duct cyst, clinicians tend to perform incision and drainage, rather than excision of the tumor.
CASE: A young woman with prolonged dyspareunia underwent total excision of the Bartholin's gland because it felt firm and irregular. Histological examination revealed a well-circumscribed lesion containing an increased number of acini with a preserved tubular/acinar ratio - findings were consistent with nodular hyperplasia.
CONCLUSION

BACKGROUND: Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the Bartholin gland is an extremely uncommon gynecologic tumor. Brain metastasis from a malignant gynecologic lesion is rarely encountered and the prognosis for this type of metastasis is quite poor.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a brain metastasis from a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the Bartholin gland that was treated by surgical resection followed by whole-brain radiation therapy and review the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Different treatment options, including resection, stereotactic radiosurgery, and whole-brain radiation

Primary carcinoma of the Bartholin's gland is a very rare malignancy of the vulva. Of the utmost importance in the management of these tumors is the management by specialized gynecological oncologist at referral centres. Gynecologists should always consider these unusual neoplasms as a differential diagnosis of potentially benigns lesions of Bartholin's gland. Treatment modality must be tailored to each patient: each histological type of these unusual neoplasms has their natural history and may require a different level of operative aggressiveness to obtain the optimal outcome. Given the rarit

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) may involve the lower female genital tract, most often as a manifestation of systemic disease and rarely as a primarily localisation.
CASE: A 73-year-old woman, HIV-negative, presented with a 5-month history of a mass in the left Bartholin's gland. The performed biopsy was reported to be a poorly differentiated carcinoma. Therefore, the patient underwent a vulvectomy with superficial groin node dissection. Unexpectedly, the definitive histological diagnosis showed that the tumor was an extranodal diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Bartholin gland cysts and abscesses are common problems in women of reproductive age. Although the cysts are usually asymptomatic, they may become enlarged or infected and cause significant pain. Often the clinician is tempted simply to lance the cyst or abscess, since this technique can be effective for other common abscesses. However, simple lancing of a Bartholin gland cyst or abscess may result in recurrence. More effective treatment methods include use of a Word catheter and marsupialization, both of which can be performed in the office.

Bartholin gland abscesses are typically caused by bacterial agents. Abscesses induced by Enterobius vermicularis are exceptional. We report, here, the case of a 27-year-old woman, whose histopathological examination of the Bartholin gland cyst confirmed the presence of E. vermicularis eggs in the lumen of the cyst.

A 37-year-old woman underwent surgery to remove bilateral vulvar masses. The masses were firm, non-tender, and immobile. Pathologic finding was a well-delineated creamy grayish mass with a homogenous grayish solid surface and mild edema, chronic inflammatory infiltration, and focal dilation of the ducts with squamous metaplasia. The diagnosis was hyperplastic and hypertrophied Bartholin's gland. Hyperplasia is a rare etiology for an enlarged Bartholin's gland. Clinical presentation of Bartholin's gland nodular hyperplasia is rather specific, although inflammatory lesion is the most common caus

The most common pathology of the Bartholin's gland is with its draining duct. Marsupialisation or fistulisation are the most common therapies. In some women, the clinical problem is with the Bartholin's gland itself, being hyperplasia with or without duct rupture in the subcutaneous tissue. Presenting symptoms and signs of nodular hyperplasia are pain and (nodular or diffuse) swelling especially during sexual arousal, or simply a symptomless mass. During surgery, the striking features are subcutaneous free-floating mucus and nodular enlargement 'deep' in the labium majus. The optimal surgical

There are limited reports in the literature about Bartholin's gland leiomyoma, mainly due to its rare occurrence. This case report describes a 56-year-old woman presenting with a lump in her vulva. The initial suspicion was that of a Bartholin's gland carcinoma based on her clinical signs and symptoms. The mass was excised and the histopathology report described a leiomyoma. Differentiating between benign and malignant tumors by inspection alone can pose a diagnostic dilemma. There are no clear management guidelines but some authorities recommend that enlarged Bartholin's gland in postmenopaus

BACKGROUND: Rectovaginal fistula is a rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease, obstetric trauma, pelvic surgery, radiation, and trauma. We present a rectovaginal fistula occurring after an excision of a Bartholin gland.
CASE: A healthy 43-year-old woman presented with flatus per vagina immediately after a Bartholin gland excision. She had a history of recurrent Bartholin abscess and had undergone multiple incision and drainage procedures of this cyst over the past 6 years. On rectovaginal examination, the patient was found to have a rectovaginal fistula and subsequently underwent succ

We report herein a case of Bartholin's gland abscess caused by Brucella melitensis. Clinical microbiology laboratory workers in areas where this disease is endemic should be familiar with the bacteriological features of this organism and consider the possibility of a brucellar etiology in a broad range of clinical settings.

Bartholin's duct cysts and gland abscesses are common problems in women of reproductive age. Bartholin's glands are located bilaterally at the posterior introitus and drain through ducts that empty into the vestibule at approximately the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions. These normally pea-sized glands are palpable only if the duct becomes cystic or a gland abscess develops. The differential diagnosis includes cystic and solid lesions of the vulva, such as epidermal inclusion cyst, Skene's duct cyst, hidradenoma papilliferum, and lipoma. The goal of management is to preserve the gland and its…

Female genital tuberculosis is relatively frequent in developing countries. Most cases occur in young women of childbearing age. The most common locations are the tubes, endometrium, and ovaries. Bartholin gland involvement is rare. The purpose of this report is to present a case of Bartholin gland tuberculosis in a 50 year-old woman and to describe the special epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic features associated with this location. Bartholinitis develops insidiously until spontaneous fistula formation. The lesion then gradually assumes a vegetative appearance that persists despite an

Percutaneous aspirates from intact Bartholin's gland cysts (12) and abscesses (34) were examined for bacteria and genital mycoplasmas. Aspirates from 10 of the 12 patients with Bartholin's gland cysts were sterile. Aspirates from the other two cysts contained organisms that are part of the vaginal microbial flora. Of the 34 abscesses, 24 (70.6 per cent) contained bacteria. Eight abscesses contained gram-negative rods in pure culture and four contained gonococci in pure culture. Twelve abscesses contained one or more vaginal organisms including anaerobic gram-negative rods (eight isolates), ana
