Echolocation in Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris).

Here we use sound and movement recording tags to study how deep-diving Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) use echolocation to forage in their natural mesopelagic habitat. These whales ensonify thousands of organisms per dive but select only about 25 prey for capture. They negotiate their cluttered environment by radiating sound in a narrow 20° field of view which they sample with 1.5-3 clicks per metre travelled requiring only some 60 clicks to locate, select and approach each prey. Sampling rates do not appear to be defined by the range to individual targets, but rather by t

NOMOS Peacock IMRT utilizing the Beak post collimation device.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), an exciting recent development in the field of radiation therapy, is widely anticipated by many to make possible significant improvements in the quality of radiation treatments delivered to patients. The NOMOS Peacock method of delivery, often referred to as serial tomotherapy because of its "slice-wise" treatment of a tumor, has been used since 1994 to treat some 8000+ patients worldwide. This slice-wise method of treatment is known to produce extremely conformal dose distributions due to its ability to specifically match the dose distribution on

Prevention of the parrot beak deformity in fingertip injuries.

The nail is supported by the dorsal tuft of the terminal phalanx. Following distal fingertip trauma, varying amounts of nail support may be lost resulting in the nail curving palmarwards. This curvature is dependent upon the degree of bony loss, the amount of remaining nail bed and the degree of scar contracture at the hyponychial-pulp interface. The parrot beak or hooked nail deformity is most commonly caused by tight closure of a fingertip amputation and excessive palmar tension at the hyponychial-pulp suture line. A simple technique using a hypodermic needle, that eliminates tension from th

Histopathology of the palmar beak ligament in trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis.

Eighteen cadaver hands were studied to investigate the relationship between degeneration of the palmar beak ligament and articular disease of the trapeziometacarpal joint. Eight of 18 joints had chondromalacia alone; 10 contained areas of eburnation in the palmar aspect of the joint. Beak ligament degeneration correlated closely with the presence of articular degeneration; all joints with eburnation demonstrated frank detachment of the ligament from its metacarpal insertion site. Histologically, the collagen fibers of the beak ligament were disorganized at the metacarpal attachment. The normal

A new treatment for parrot beak deformity of the toe.

Two cases of congenital parrot beak deformity of the toe were treated by pushing back the nail plate, nailbed, matrix, and proximal skin fold in one piece as a flap. The proximal skin portion of this flap was deepithelialized to facilitate this shift, and thus no dog-ear deformity was produced. The distal skin defect of the pulp was covered by a palmar advancement flap. This method does not require augmentation of the fingertip or toetip and is very useful for correcting parrot beak deformities of the toes.

Analysis of Aortic Arch Hemodynamics With Simulated Bird's Beak Effects.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the flow effects in different degrees of thoracic aortic stent graft protrusion extension by creating bird beak effect simulations using accurate 3D geometry and a realistic, nonlinear, elastic biomechanical model using computer-aided software SolidWorks. METHODS: Segmentation in 3D of an aortic arch from a computed tomography (CT) scan of a real-life patient was performed using SolidWorks. A parametric analysis of three models was performed: (A) Aortic arch with no stent, (B) 3 mm bird-beak configuration, and (C) 6.5 mm bird-beak conf

Battling the Eagle's sharp beak, Eagle syndrome; a case report.

Eagle Syndrome is a pain syndrome of rare and unwonted incidence. Forbearer has an elongated styloid process or a calcified stylohyoid ligament, suppressing glossopharyngeal nerve leading to a mélange of symptoms including sporadic cervicofacial pain, headache, and foreign body sensation. Here we present case of a 65 year old military man of south Asian origin, who presented with complaints of sudden episodes of blackouts for past five years and pain in neck while turning head to left for past two months. Patient's ultrasound Doppler showed marked narrowing of proximal left internal carotid ar

Cryptosporidiosis in four cockatoos with psittacine beak and feather disease.

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in 4 cockatoos with psittacine beak and feather disease. Three of the birds had cryptosporidiosis confined to the epithelium covering the bursa of Fabricius. One bird had generalized parasitism of the small intestine, large intestine, and bursal epithelium. All of the birds had intermittent to protracted diarrhea before death. Presumably, acquired immunodeficiency from psittacine beak and feather disease promoted establishment of cryptosporidiosis and other secondary diseases including septicemia, peritonitis, chlamydiosis, and mycotic ventriculitis.

Bisphosphonate beak without the bisphosphonate: atypical femoral fracture with denosumab.

Atypical femur fractures (AFFs) are rare complications of antiresorptive therapies like denosumab, resulting from suppressed bone remodelling. These fractures occur with minimal or no trauma and are often preceded by prodromal thigh or groin pain. Radiographically, they present as transverse or short oblique fractures with lateral cortical thickening and minimal comminution. We report a case of an elderly bisphosphonate-naïve patient on denosumab who developed a subtrochanteric AFF. The patient underwent intramedullary nailing, denosumab was discontinued, and a transition to bisphosphonates was

Transsphenoidal retrieval of a needlefish beak remnants from the optic canal.

Penetrating orbital trauma from marine creatures, especially needlefish, should be considered after injuries sustained in open water. Advances in endoscopic sinus surgery have enabled surgeons to remove certain orbital foreign bodies through endoscopic endonasal approaches. 3D segmentation is a valuable pre-operative tool in complex endoscopic orbital cases.

Beak and bumper - Physics forceps: Evaluation of new technique in extraction.

PURPOSE: The history of dentistry is not short; it started from ancient Egypt to ancient Romans and ancient Greeks. When it comes to extraction, all of them have made their own discoveries and progress. The progress they made also helped dentistry to move ahead in evolution of new extraction technique - the Physics Forceps. We have assessed the viability in using the Physics Forceps for routine dental extraction in our study for a period of 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 241 patients indicated for extraction based on our inclusion criteria using Physics Forceps afte

Short beak: a new autosomal recessive semilethal mutation in Japanese quail.

Short break (SBK) is a new semilethal mutation of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The SBK individuals are characterized externally by short breaks, shanks, and digits. The shank is also thicker than the wild type. The shape of the mutant beak does not show a parrotlike appearance, contrasting with that of other poultry chondrodystrophic mutants reported in the literature. Bones in the fore and hind limbs of the SBK mutant are also shorter than the wild types. The humerus and ulna in the wing are significantly thicker than the wild types. Other bones in the wing and leg show approximately t

Upper beak depression instead of elevation dominates cranial kinesis in woodpeckers.

The value of birds' ability to move the upper beak relative to the braincase has been shown in vital tasks like feeding and singing. In woodpeckers, such cranial kinesis has been thought to hinder pecking as delivering forceful blows calls for a head functioning as a rigid unit. Here, we tested whether cranial kinesis is constrained in woodpeckers by comparing upper beak rotation during their daily activities such as food handling, calling and gaping with those from closely related species that also have a largely insectivorous diet but do not peck at wood. Both woodpeckers and non-woodpecker

Beyond the beak: Brain size and allometry in avian craniofacial evolution.

Birds exhibit an enormous variety of beak shapes. Such remarkable variation, however, has distracted research from other important aspects of their skull evolution, the nature of which has been little explored. Key aspects of avian skull variation appear to be qualitatively similar to those of mammals, encompassing variation in the degree of cranial vaulting, cranial base flexure, and the proportions and orientations of the occipital and facial regions. The evolution of these traits has been studied intensively in mammals under the Spatial Packing Hypothesis (SPH), an architectural constraint

Beak and feather dystrophy in wild sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita).

Three flocks of wild sulphur-crested cockatoos in southeastern Australia had a 10-20% prevalence of feather and beak deformities. In affected birds, the crest, tail, contour and down feathers were lost or reduced in length owing to a "pinching off" 0.5-1 cm above the skin. The underlying skin was discolored brown. Flight feathers appeared normal and could sustain flight. In mildly affected birds, only the crest and down feathers were involved. Histological examination of affected feathers showed necrosis of developing cells in their epidermal collars. The epidermis was moderately hyperplastic
