The paper describes an atypical case of simultaneous airborne and direct contact dermatitis in a beekeeper from the Małopolska region. This is the third such case described in a beekeeper in the world and the first in Poland. I suggest that propolis should be regarded as both a direct and airborne contact allergen in beekeepers.

We compared the history of sting reactions with venom skin prick test (SPT) and CAP RAST reactions in beekeepers in order to assess the value of structured questions and symptom backgrounds. The study population consisted of 102 beekeepers, who were 25-75 years of age. Bee and wasp venom SPT was performed with concentrations of 10, 100, and 300 micrograms/ml. The CAP Phadiatop test was used in the screening of IgE antibodies against common inhalant allergens. Forty-two beekeepers had never experienced large local or systemic reactions after a bee sting. Of the 31 subjects with a history of sys

BACKGROUND: Bee venom (BV) hypersensitivity can be severe and potentially life-threatening. Beekeepers heavily exposed to bee stings and are thus at a high-risk group. The data on bee sting reactions among beekeepers in Thailand is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, clinical and immunological characteristics, and the knowledge of BV hypersensitivity in Thai beekeepers.
METHODS: A self-reported questionnaire survey about BV reactions in beekeepers were conducted. Further blood test for immunological parameters: serum BV-specific IgE (BV sIgE), phospholipase A2-specific IgE (Api

Seventy-eight Brazilian beekeepers who had been stung on average six times per month were studied. Sixty-eight beekeepers (87.1%) showed restricted local clinical reactions; nine individuals (11.5%) had extensive local reactions, and only one (1.2%) suffered anaphylactic shock. The humoral immunologic pattern of these individuals were studied by using immunoenzymatic methods to determine the serum titles of specific IgE and specific IgG4. Three groups of beekeepers presenting different humoral immunologic patterns were identified, in which the predominant pattern was the absence of specific Ig

The four honeybee species native to Cambodia-Apis dorsata, Apis cerana, Apis florea, and Apis andreniformis-play a vital role in ecosystem health and agricultural productivity through their pollination activities. Beekeeping in Cambodia has primarily developed around the introduced species Apis mellifera. However, it remains underdeveloped compared to neighboring countries, with wild honey collection continuing to play a significant role. Although native bees are not at immediate risk of extinction, their crucial ecological and socio-economic roles, coupled with the threats to their population

Beekeepers are at increased risk for honeybee (Hb) venom allergy and they represent a unique population for Hymenoptera venom studies. The aim of this was to prospectively examine the pattern of Hb venom sensitization over a 5-year period in new beekeepers and define possible predisposing factors. Thirty-five beekeepers were tested every 6 months for 5 years with in vivo and in vitro methods to detect the possible development of sensitization to Hb and common wasp (Cw) venom. Inclusion criteria included the lack of previous beekeeping activity and absence of sensitization or reported reaction

The pesticide residues in beeswax pose a risk to bee health and hive productivity. This study analyzed 25 beeswax samples from apiaries across five regions in Extremadura, a key beekeeping area in Spain. Foundation wax samples were also sourced from three common suppliers to evaluate contamination at the origin. A multi-residue of 560 substances was performed using QuEChERS extraction, LC-MS, and GC-MS methods. The results revealed 18 insecticides, 7 fungicides, and 4 herbicides, including banned substances such as endrin (up to 218.57 µg/kg) and chlorfenvinphos (15-16 µg/kg). Acrinathrin (5.2

The native honey bee of the Arabian Peninsula, Apis mellifera jemenitica, is well adapted to live in arid environments, but could potentially remain vulnerable to pathogens and parasites. We present a molecular report of Nosema and viral infections from eleven commercial apiaries across Southwestern Saudi Arabia. We confirmed that all Nosema-positive samples belonged to N. ceranae, with infection levels varying by location. The average spore count via microscopy was 3.43 × 107 spores per bee across all locations, with the highest being 3.39 × 108 spores per bee. No spores were detected in thre

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although exposure to stings has been identified as the leading risk factor for anaphylaxis due to Hymenoptera venom allergy, professional beekeepers receive hundreds of stings yearly without developing systemic reactions. This study aims to analyze the mechanisms underlying bee venom tolerance in beekeepers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Participants were recruited and classified into 3 groups: allergic patients (APs), who experienced systemic reactions after bee stings, with a positive intradermal test and specific IgE (sIgE) to Apis mellifera ven

A survey on 5115 beekeepers and 121 patients treated with bee venom by an apitherapy clinic in the Hubei province, the epicenter of COVID-19 in China, reported that none of the beekeepers developed symptoms associated with COVID-19, the new and devastating pandemic. The hypothesis that immunity to bee venom could have a preventive effect was expressed and the authors of the Chinese survey suggested that the next step should be animal experiments on monkeys. We believed that before starting such studies, a second independent survey should verify the findings and define the hypothesis more clear

Honey bees are important pollinators of agricultural crops. Pathogens and other factors have been implicated in high annual losses of honey bee colonies in North America and some European countries. To further investigate the relationship between multiple factors, including pathogen prevalence and abundance and colony health, we monitored commercially managed migratory honey bee colonies involved in California almond pollination in 2014. At each sampling event, honey bee colony health was assessed, using colony population size as a proxy for health, and the prevalence and abundance of seven ho

Beekeepers (Bks) represent a high allergic risk population against Hymenoptera because of their frequent exposure to bee stings. Most published studies show different percentage of sensitization and systemic reactions with to another groups of population. With the aim to know the prevalence and type of allergic reaction in Bks from the Canary Islands, 246 subjects were studied prospectively. A questionnaire was developed and skin test and specific IgE determination against Apis mellifera, Vespula and Polistes venom were performed. One hundred and twenty eight subjects had presented at least on

A 2-year field experiment was performed to test lithium chloride, LiCl, application in a normal beekeeping management system. The effect of LiCl on bee larval mortality, beehive weight (honey production) and Varroa mite mortality were tested. Spectrometric quantification of Li on honey and the larval body were made to test the effectiveness of the presence of LiCl. Li was detected in bee larval bodies and in honey over 2 years, from 2018 to 2019. According to the results, no effect of LiCl on mite mortality or bee larval mortality was detected in the first year of application. By assessing the

Histamine is the principal mediator released in the skin during immediate bee venom allergy but the significance of cysteinyl leukotrienes in these reactions is not known. We measured skin histamine and cysteinyl leukotriene release induced by bee venom in six sensitized beekeepers with the skin microdialysis technique. The skin was dialyzed for 2 h after skin prick test with bee venom, and the release of histamine and leukotriene C4 (LTC4) into the microdialysis fractions was measured. Leukotriene E4 (LTE) and methylhistamine excretion into the urine was assayed and whole blood histamine rele

INTRODUCTION: The parasitic mite Varroa destructor remains a major threat to Apis mellifera globally, contributing significantly to high colony losses despite various control interventions. Understanding the range of Varroa control strategies employed by beekeepers is crucial for mitigating these losses and improving honey bee health.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the diverse Varroa destructor control strategies implemented by beekeepers across Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia, and to evaluate their association with winter honey bee colony mortality. Our primar

Propolis is a resinous material collected by honeybees from the exudates and buds of plants. It has been widely used as a remedy by humans since ancient times, as well as for dietary supplements and cosmetics. European legislation recently focused on the quality and hygiene standards of foods, including beehive products, and extensive efforts have been made to avoid the presence of chemical contaminants, whilst in contrast few studies have investigated the magnitude of contamination by physical ones. We conducted a filth-test survey to evaluate the contamination of ethanolic extract of propoli
