A computerized test of self-control predicts classroom behavior.

We assessed choices on a computerized test of self-control (CTSC) for a group of children with features of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a group of controls. Thirty boys participated in the study. Fifteen of the children had been rated by their parents as hyperactive and inattentive, and 15 were age- and gender-matched controls in the same classroom. The children were observed in the classroom for three consecutive mornings, and data were collected on their activity levels and attention. The CTSC consisted of two tasks. In the delay condition, children chose to receive th

Impaired inhibitory control of behavior in chronic cocaine users.

This study examined the ability to inhibit and execute behavioral responses in adult cocaine users and in an aged-matched sample with no history of cocaine use. Subjects (n=22) were identified as cocaine users by testing positive for the presence of cocaine or benzoylecgonine in urine-analysis and by self-reported cocaine use. Control subjects (n=22) tested negative in urine-analysis and reported no past cocaine use. Response inhibition and response execution were measured by a stop-signal paradigm using a choice reaction time task that engaged subjects in responding to go-signals when stop-si

Losing control: assaultive behavior as a predictor of impulse control disorders in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Assaultive behaviors are common among young people and have been associated with a range of other unhealthy, impulsive behaviors such as substance use and problem gambling. This study sought to determine the predictive ability of single assaultive incidents for impulse control disorders, an association that has yet to be examined, especially in young adults. METHODS: The authors conducted a university-wide email survey in the spring of 2011 on 6000 university students. The survey examined assaultive behavior and associated mental health variables (using a clinically validated scree

A spinal substrate for modular control of natural behavior.

Natural behavior unfolds as coordinated sequences of body movements. This organization suggests that behavior may be built from discrete motor patterns, yet how such arrangements are implemented by neural circuits remains unknown. Here, we combined kinematic analysis, muscle recordings, genetically identified cell types, and closed-loop optogenetic perturbations to examine the organizational logic of natural gap-crossing jumps in mice. Jumping was characterized by a series of precisely defined phases and their associated modular motor patterns. The core phases, propulsion and flight, exhibited

Control of Eating Behavior Using a Novel Feedback System.

Subjects eat food from a plate that sits on a scale connected to a computer that records the weight loss of the plate during the meal and makes up a curve of food intake, meal duration and rate of eating modeled by a quadratic equation. The purpose of the method is to change eating behavior by providing visual feedback on the computer screen that the subject can adapt to because her/his own rate of eating appears on the screen during the meal. The data generated by the method is automatically analyzed and fitted to the quadratic equation using a custom made algorithm. The method has the advant

Prefrontal cortical control of a brainstem social behavior circuit.

The prefrontal cortex helps adjust an organism's behavior to its environment. In particular, numerous studies have implicated the prefrontal cortex in the control of social behavior, but the neural circuits that mediate these effects remain unknown. Here we investigated behavioral adaptation to social defeat in mice and uncovered a critical contribution of neural projections from the medial prefrontal cortex to the dorsal periaqueductal gray, a brainstem area vital for defensive responses. Social defeat caused a weakening of functional connectivity between these two areas, and selective inhibi

The rise and fall of impulse control behavior disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are psychiatric disorders characterized by the failure to resist an impulse or by the temptation to perform an act that is harmful to oneself or to others. METHODS: ICDs, including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive eating and shopping, can occur as a complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) together with other behavioral disorders, including dopamine dysregulation syndrome. This review is based on a literature search updated to May 2017, focusing on the epidemiology, clinical features, and therapeutic options of ICDs associated wi

Forebrain control of locomotor behaviors.

Activation of different areas in the forebrain evokes different types of goal directed adaptive behaviors. An important component of these different patterns of behavior is the locomotion that brings the animal to or away from a particular location. Here I review the role of projections from forebrain structures to the mesopontine tegmentum of the brainstem where neural mechanisms for initiation of locomotion and regulation of postural muscle tone are located that are activated during locomotor behavior. It is interesting is to understand how signals that converge from the forebrain structures

[Behavioral approaches in tobacco control].

In most Western societies, there is an abundance of information on what needs to be done to control the use of tobacco. This paper presents different strategies for addressing tobacco control. Many of the strategies such as increasing taxes, increasing control over promotion of tobacco, and the restriction of smoking should be made a priority. However, there is still the need to provide help for the smoker to quit. The evidence with regards to effective ways of getting smokers to quit and the effectiveness of different modalities is reviewed. Programs found to be effective include self-help, i

Electronic Control of Emission Behavior in Atomically Precise Copper Nanoclusters.

Atomically precise copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) offer a compelling platform for elucidating structure-property relationships in quantum-confined materials, yet isolating ligand-induced electronic effects without altering core geometry remains a fundamental challenge. Herein, we report a systematic study of four compositionally identical Cu11 NCs in which the metal nuclearity and core architecture are strictly preserved, while only the substitution position and electronic nature of the thiolate ligands are varied. By employing methyl- and amino-substituted benzenethiols (ABT) in para and meta c

Serotonin control of thermotaxis memory behavior in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

Caenorhabditis elegans is as an ideal model system for the study of mechanisms underlying learning and memory. In the present study, we employed C. elegans assay system of thermotaxis memory to investigate the possible role of serotonin neurotransmitter in memory control. Our data showed that both mutations of tph-1, bas-1, and cat-4 genes, required for serotonin synthesis, and mutations of mod-5 gene, encoding a serotonin reuptake transporter, resulted in deficits in thermotaxis memory behavior. Exogenous treatment with serotonin effectively recovered the deficits in thermotaxis memory of tph

Bacterial products and the control of ingestive behavior: clinical implications.

Bacterial products such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and muramyl peptides are delivered in the course of infections. They trigger the host's acute phase responses to bacterial infections and are probably involved in the accompanying hypophagia because LPS and muramyl dipeptide (MDP, the minimal immunologically active muramyl peptide) reduce food intake after parenteral administration in animals. LPS and MDP inhibit feeding synergistically through separate but interacting mechanisms. The hypophagic effects of LPS and MDP are presumably mediated by the combined actions of interleukin-1, tumor ne

Oscillatory behavior of control-systems of calcium homeostasis in chickens.

Computer simulation of calcium homeostasis in chicks predicted an oscillatory behavior of bone calcium flow and kidney 25-hydroxyvitamin D3-1-hydroxylase with a periodicity of 56 h and a 9 h phase difference between the two signals. In growing chickens subjected to a light: dark cycle of 22:2 h, and intravenously dosed with 45Ca, the temporal changes in plasma 45Ca could be described by an exponential decline with superimposed diurnal oscillations. The activity of the renal 25-hydroxyvitamin D3-1-hydroxylase in chicks subjected to a 12:12 h light: dark cycle ALSO followed diurnal oscillations,

Behavioral control of medicine compliance.

This study examined the effectiveness of several behavioral techniques on compliance of college students taking vitamin C on q.i.d. regimen. Compliance was assessed by a new technique using a variation of the urine tracer procedure designed specifically for this study. Subjects were provided vitamin C tablets, with three tablets per week containing phenazopyridine, a drug that produces a bright red-orange urine discoloration. Subjects were requested to indicate when urine discolorations occurred, and compliance was assessed by comparing the time of their report to the time predicted on the bas

Dynamical behavior analysis of 2-control strategies on tuberculosis model.

We develop and rigorously analyze a deterministic SEITR (Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Treated-Recovered) model that incorporates distancing and treatment interventions to examine the transmission dynamics of tuberculosis. The basic reproduction number (R0) is computed and decomposed to determine the threshold conditions for disease persistence. We propose a next-generation matrix formulation to determine the stability of the disease-free state and demonstrate that tuberculosis dies out whenever R0 < 1. Numerical implementation is performed using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme and the ba

Financial Literacy, Locus of Control, and Gambling Behavior in Australia.

This study examines whether financial literacy is associated with reduced gambling risk using a large representative sample of the Australian population in the Household, Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. We analyzed four waves of biennial data from 2016 to 2022 that contain financial literacy and gambling modules, covering 13,358 respondents aged 15 and above, corresponding to 21,140 person-year observations. We found that higher financial literacy was associated with lower gambling risk measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). Instrumental variable regress

Rate versus synchrony codes for cerebellar control of motor behavior.

Information transmission between neural populations could occur through either coordinated changes in firing rates or the precise transmission of spike timing. We investigate the code for information transmission from a part of the cerebellar cortex that is crucial for the accurate execution of a quantifiable motor behavior. Simultaneous recordings from Purkinje cell pairs in the cerebellum of rhesus macaques reveal how these cells coordinate their activity to drive smooth pursuit eye movements. Purkinje cells show millisecond-scale coordination of spikes (synchrony), but the level of synchron
