The similar past pain experience evokes both observational contagious pain and consolation in stranger rat observers.

Laboratory rodents have been shown to have an ability to recognize the injury site and negative emotional state of their conspecifics in pain, resulting in empathic consoling behaviors and observational contagious pain (OCP). However, these empathic responses have been shown to be familiarity-dependent. In this report, we further explored whether the past pain experience could evoke empathic response in stranger observers. In our rodent model, two types of empathic response have been identified from naive cagemate observer (COnaive) during and after a priming dyadic social interaction (PDSI) w

Repetitive behaviors in CHARGE syndrome: differential diagnosis and treatment options.

Twenty-nine students with CHARGE syndrome were evaluated using the Compulsive Behavior Checklist (CBC). Most of the students obtained a high score for repetitive behaviors, averaging 11.5 repetitive behaviors per student. Most students' repetitive behaviors significantly interfered with their daily routine. Thirty-four percent of the students responded to redirection with aggression toward themselves or others. Many of these behaviors do not respond well to traditional behavioral techniques. Through observation, definitions, and using functional analysis of behavior, repetitive behaviors were

A Pilot Validation Study of the Newborn Behavioral Observations System: Associations with Salivary Cortisol and Temperament.

OBJECTIVE: There are few standardized neonatal neurobehavioral instruments available for longitudinal child development research. We adapted an established clinical tool, the Newborn Behavioral Observations (NBO) system, for research by standardizing the administration protocol and expanding the 3-point coding scale to 5 points. METHODS: We administered the 5-point NBO to 144 racially/ethnically diverse late preterm or term infants born to low-income women (average age 5 weeks). Cronbach's alphas were calculated to determine internal consistency reliability of Autonomic, Motor, Organization o

Evaluating inter- and intra-rater reliability in assessing upper limb compensatory movements post-stroke: creating a ground truth through video analysis?

BACKGROUND: Compensatory movements frequently emerge in the process of motor recovery after a stroke. Given their potential for unfavorable long-term effects, it is crucial to assess and document compensatory movements throughout rehabilitation. However, clinically applicable assessment tools are currently limited. Deep learning methods have shown promising potential for assessing movement quality and addressing this gap. A crucial prerequisite for developing an accurate measurement tool is ensuring reliability in assessing compensatory movements, which is essential for establishing a valid gr

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for specific phobias with a child demonstrating severe problem behavior and developmental delays.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBTs) are widely used for anxiety disorders in typically developing children; however, there has been no previous attempt to administer CBT for specific phobia (in this case study, one-session treatment) to developmentally or intellectually disabled children. This case study integrates both cognitive-behavioral and behavior analytic assessment techniques in the CBT of water and height phobia in a 7-year-old male with developmental delays and severe behavior problems. Head and Neck Paragangliomas: An Update on Evaluation and Management.

OBJECTIVE: Head and neck paragangliomas are a group of slow-growing hypervascular tumors associated with the paraganglion system. The approach to evaluate and treat these lesions has evolved over the last 2 decades. While radical surgery had been the traditional approach, improvements in diagnostic imaging as well as radiation therapy techniques have led to an emphasis on observation and nonsurgical therapy in many patients. This article reviews the contemporary approach to the workup and management of head and neck paragangliomas. DATA SOURCE: Articles were identified from PubMed. REVIEW ME

A Comparison of Common Hippopotamus (Artiodactyla) and Mysticete (Cetacea) Nostrils: An Open and Shut Case.

Hippos are considered the closest living relatives to cetaceans and they have some similar adaptations for aquatic living, such as a modified respiratory tract. Behavioral observations of male and female common hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) at Disney's Animal Kingdom® and the Adventure Aquarium were conducted to describe and examine movements of the nostrils during respiration (inspiration, expiration, and inter-breath interval). The hippo nostril is a crescent shaped opening with lateral and medial aspects that are mobile and can be adducted and abducted to regulate the nostril opening. Not

Neural basis for brain responses to TV commercials: a high-resolution EEG study.

We investigated brain activity during the observation of TV commercials by tracking the cortical activity and the functional connectivity changes in normal subjects. The aim was to elucidate if the TV commercials that were remembered by the subjects several days after their first observation elicited particular brain activity and connectivity compared with those generated during the observation of TV commercials that were quickly forgotten. High-resolution electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings were performed in a group of healthy subjects and the cortical activity during the observation of TV

Gender differences in depression: an ethological study of nonverbal behavior during interviews.

Previous studies of gender differences in the phenomenology of depression have focused mostly on symptoms as measured by self-report questionnaires or clinician-rated scales. In this study, we examined gender differences in the interpersonal behavior of depressed patients by using ethological techniques which involve direct observation of behavior. The nonverbal behavior of 72 nondepressed volunteers and 68 patients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of nonpsychotic unipolar depression was videorecorded during clinical interviews and scored according to an ethological scoring system including 37 behav

Capturing change in restricted and repetitive behaviour in preschoolers with ASD: A comparison of direct behavioural observation and parent report.

BACKGROUND: Restricted and repetitive behaviour (RRB) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be assessed by different measures, which diverge in item quantity, dimensionality or source of information. However, change sensitivity has not been systematically investigated among commonly used measures, albeit its importance for clinical trials and longitudinal studies. METHODS: Longitudinal data resulting from behavioural observation (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2, ADOS-2; Brief Observation of Social Communication Change, BOSCC) and parent report (Restricted Behaviour Scale-Revised, RBS

Acute hunger does not always undermine prosociality.

It has been argued that, when they are acutely hungry, people act in self-protective ways by keeping resources to themselves rather than sharing them. In four studies, using experimental, quasi-experimental, and correlational designs (total N = 795), we examine the effects of acute hunger on prosociality in a wide variety of non-interdependent tasks (e.g. dictator game) and interdependent tasks (e.g. public goods games). While our procedures successfully increase subjective hunger and decrease blood glucose, we do not find significant effects of hunger on prosociality. This is true for both de

[The Play-PAB and its Validation in a Preschool Psychiatric Population].

With community samples, parent behavior can be assessed in standardized mother-child interaction situations with the observational instrument Lab-PAB by Wilson und Durbin (2012) with respect to five dimensions (Involvement, Positive Emotionality, Hostility, Intrusiveness and Discipline). We examined an adaptation of Lab-PAB for non-standardized free-play interaction situations (Play-PAB version) with a preschool psychiatric sample. We examined the internal consistency, interrater reliability and dimensional structure of the Play-PAB and its associations to the clinical relationship assessment

The relationship between stimulant medication and tics.

Clinical evidence supports the observation that stimulant drugs increase the severity of tics in 25% to 50% of patients with TS, and occasionally can precipitate TS in a patient who did not previously manifest symptoms of this disorder. As ADD is frequently associated with TS, the clinician is often faced with a dilemma. A conservative approach to the use of stimulant medication, stringent criteria for its use, adequate counseling of the child and parents, and a thorough cost-benefit analysis before initiating treatment are required. Behavior management and environmental manipulation can be us

Behavioural and emotional profile of children in residential care in Greece.

Previous research has shown the harmful effects that out of home care can have on children. Specifically, institutionalized children experience high rates of developmental and psychological problems, and therefore special attention is needed so that a fast intervention can be achieved and further complications can be prevented. This paper focuses on building the psychological and behavioural profile of children living in four residential care units in western Greece, in respect to gender, age and nationality. 153 children (88 children in residential care and 65 children rearing in their famili

The effects of methylphenidate on a functional analysis of disruptive behavior: a replication and extension.

In the present investigation, a functional analysis of the disruptive behavior of a 18-year-old man who had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and moderate mental retardation was conducted, both when he was taking methylphenidate and when he was not taking the medication. The results of this functional analysis demonstrated that the participant's disruptive behaviors were reinforced by access to attention only when he was not taking methylphenidate.

Identification of Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Second Year of Life at Day-Care Centres by Day-Care Staff: Step One in the Development of a Short Observation List.

Early symptoms of ASD develop through the second year of life, making a stable ASD diagnosis possible at 24 months of age. However, in general, children with ASD have their diagnosis at an older age. This retrospective study, including 30 children with ASD and 30 control children aged 3-6 years, explored the possibility of developing a short observation list to be used in day care settings for children 12-24 months of age. From 73 symptoms selected from published screeners and observation tools, we were able to construct a list of six symptoms that retrospectively differentiated children with

Observing the observation of (vulnerable) road user behaviour and traffic safety: A scoping review.

Behavioural observation studies in road safety research collect naturalistic data of road users that are not informed (beforehand) of their participation in a research project. It enables the observation of behavioural and situational processes that contribute to unsafe traffic events, while possible behavioural adaptations due to the road users' recognition of being observed are minimized. The literature in this field is vast and diverse, with studies dating back to the 1930s. The aim of this paper is to summarize the research efforts in the domain of road user behavioural observation researc

A new look at neurobehavioral development in rhesus monkey neonates (Macaca mulatta).

The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) evaluates a newborn infant's autonomic, motor, state, temperament, and social-attentional systems, which can help to identify infants at risk of developmental problems. Given the prevalence of rhesus monkeys being used as an animal model for human development, here we aimed to validate a standardized test battery modeled after the NBAS for use with nonhuman primates called the Infant Behavioral Assessment Scale (IBAS), employing exploratory structural equation modeling using a large sample of rhesus macaque neonates (n = 1,056). Micro- and nano-structural analyses of damage in bone.

Skeletal fractures represent a significant medical and economic burden for our society. In the US alone, age-related hip, spine, and wrist fractures accounted for more than $17 billion in direct health care costs in 2001. Moreover, skeletal fractures are not limited to the elderly; stress fractures and impact/trauma-related fractures are a significant problem in younger people also. Gaining insight into the mechanisms of fracture and how these mechanisms are modulated by intrinsic as well as extrinsic factors may improve the ability to define fracture risk and develop and assess preventative t

The relationship of age, early motor skills and observable child behaviors in young children with developmental delays.

BACKGROUND: Children with disabilities often experience delays in one or more domains of development including motor skill delays. Delays in motor skill development may put children further behind their peers without disabilities in respect to aspects of early learning. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine how gross motor skills mediated the relationship of age and the observable child behaviors of compliance and adaptive behavior in a group of young children (2-4 years) with developmental disabilities around one time point. METHODS: Children with developmental disabilities (N = 11
