The subcategorization of nonpsychotic depression in behavioral and nonbehavioral research.

In terms of the traditional dichotomy it has been relatively easy to make assured diagnoses of endogenous depression, but not of neurotic depression. In consequence, some have suggested that the diagnosis of neurotic depression be dropped and that the cases previously so categorized be recognized as heterogeneous nonpsychotic depressions. Nevertheless, numerous behavioral outcome studies have treated groups of nonpsychotic depressions as homogeneous. The present investigation compared the incidence of this usage in behavioral and nonbehavioral studies. It was found that behavioral workers are

Bridging Intervention and Implementation Research for More Personalized Behavioral Health.

Despite advances in behavioral health research, the burden of behavioral health disorders continues to grow. One explanation for the persistent challenges to improved behavioral health outcomes is the misalignment between behavioral health research and the diverse and complex needs of individuals served in real-world settings. Reimagining how interventions are developed, tested, and implemented to be more personalized could result in better alignment with the unique biopsychosocial mechanisms, contextual circumstances, and treatment goals of individuals. We outline four shifts to advance more

Research ethics for all: Development of a social-behavioral research ethics education program for community research partners with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with developmental disabilities make important contributions to research. However, inaccessible research ethics trainings present a barrier to them taking on some research roles. OBJECTIVES: We developed a social-behavioral research ethics training that leads to certification tailored to the accessibility needs and roles of community research partners with developmental disabilities. METHODS: We collaborated with diverse partners (people with developmental disabilities, a disability service provider, health researchers, human research participant protections experts) to de

A modularity design approach to behavioral research with immersive virtual reality: A SkyrimVR-based behavioral experimental framework.

Virtual reality (VR) has been shown to be a potential research tool, yet the gap between traditional and VR behavioral experiment systems poses a challenge for many behavioral researchers. To address the challenge posed, the present study first adopted a modularity design strategy and proposed a five-module architectural framework for a VR behavioral experiment system that aimed to reduce complexity and costs of development. Applying the five-module architectural framework, the present study developed the SkyrimVR-based behavioral experimental framework (SkyBXF) module, a basic experimental fr

"Micropersonality" traits and their implications for behavioral and movement ecology research.

Many animal personality traits have implicit movement-based definitions and can directly or indirectly influence ecological and evolutionary processes. It has therefore been proposed that animal movement studies could benefit from acknowledging and studying consistent interindividual differences (personality), and, conversely, animal personality studies could adopt a more quantitative representation of movement patterns.Using high-resolution tracking data of three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus), we examined the repeatability of four movement parameters commonly used in the an

Modeling menopause: The utility of rodents in translational behavioral endocrinology research.

The human menopause transition and aging are each associated with an increase in a variety of health risk factors including, but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, stroke, sexual dysfunction, affective disorders, sleep disturbances, and cognitive decline. It is challenging to systematically evaluate the biological underpinnings associated with the menopause transition in the human population. For this reason, rodent models have been invaluable tools for studying the impact of gonadal hormone fluctuations and eventual decline on a variety of body systems. Wh

Maternal predictors of behavioral disturbance in preschool children: a research note.

The effects of maternal mental health and familial stress on child behavior were evaluated in a community sample of 691 preschoolers. Presence of behavior problems was determined using the Behavior Screening Questionnaire (BSQ) at age 3, and using the Conners Parent Rating Scale at age 4. In multivariate analyses, the development of disturbance was predicted by higher BSQ score, maternal role competition and maternal hostility assessed at both interviews; persistence was predicted by initial BSQ score and initial maternal hostility only. These results underscore the complexity of the relations

Current Advances in Behavioral Addictions: From Fundamental Research to Clinical Practice.

Gambling disorder is the only behavioral addiction recognized as a clinical disorder in DSM-5, and Internet gaming disorder is included as a condition requiring further research. ICD-11 categorizes gambling and gaming disorders as disorders due to addictive behaviors. Additional behavioral addictions may include compulsive sexual behavior disorder, compulsive buying-shopping disorder, and problematic use of social media. This narrative review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding these five (potential) disorders due to addictive behaviors. All five (potential) disorders are clini

Behind Bars: Experiences Conducting Behavioral Addictions Research in a County Jail.

Individuals who are incarcerated experience disparities in mental health, warranting study by nurse researchers. However, nurse researchers' unfamiliarity with the jail environment may pose a barrier to conducting research with this vulnerable population. The current article presents an account of the planning and implementation needed to study perceived health and gambling behavior in county jail inmates. The challenges and rewards of research that aim to better understand the mental health issues affecting this population are also identified. Developing relationships with jail personnel and

Motorcycling safety research: a review of the social and behavioral literature.

The literature on motorcycling safety research is reviewed, and it is argued that there have been two main periods. The first, spanning the 1970's, was based on accident analysis, and the main objective was to identify and control factors that contribute to the severity of motorcycling accidents. The main concerns were to reduce head and brain injuries through safety helmets, to reduce multi-vehicle collisions through daytime use of headlamps, and to reduce drink-riding. The second period, the 1980's shifted the emphasis of research to what might be called 'riding analysis'--that is, analysis

Longitudinal research on the behavioral characteristics of children with learning disabilities.

This paper summarizes a program of research on the behavioral characteristics of children with learning disabilities (LD) compared to average achievers. Longitudinal studies over a 3-year period beginning in the first and second grades showed that children with LD, as a heterogeneous group, displayed a persistent pattern of maladaptive classroom behavior that distinguished them from average achieving peers and that was associated with continued underachievement over time. Subsequently, children with LD in the longitudinal sample were clustered into seven different subtypes that represented att

Neuroscience and appetitive behavior research: 25 years.

Neuroscience techniques have made major contributions to the understanding of appetitive behavior. Highlights in six areas are summarized to illustrate progress during the 25 years of the Columbia Appetitive Behavior Seminar: (1) discovery of angiotensin and aldosterone in the control of thirst and salt appetite; (2) electrophysiological decoding of chemoreceptive information in the brain; (3) a new foundation in the hypothalamus built on peptides, such as neuropeptide Y and galanin, interacting with monoamines and steroids in the control of appetite for macronutrients; (4) discovery of numero

Continuous glucose monitoring: a review for behavioral researchers.

OBJECTIVE: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems collect and store glucose data in an ongoing fashion for several days at a time. The main advantage of CGM is that it can help identify fluctuations and trends that would otherwise go unnoticed with other glucose measures. Here, we provide a review of CGM for behavioral researchers. METHODS: We begin with a brief review of diabetes and glucose measurement and then describe what CGM is and reference the commercial CGM systems currently available. We discuss the challenges involved in using CGM in behavioral research. We then present a broa

Methodological issues in behavioral addictions' research: A call for an unbiased analysis of excessive behaviors.

In the psychological literature, there has been a proliferation of new behavioral addictions, often biased by an aprioristic and confirmatory approach that applied the addiction framework without adequately considering other potential explanations of excessive behaviors. This position paper further extends the critiques previously pointed out in the literature by highlighting the methodological issues underlying the current behavioral addiction research and the need for future studies to avoid a confirmatory and aprioristic approach (whatever the etiological hypothesis). Analyzing repetitive b

Biomedical, socio-behavioral, and implementation science gaps in multipurpose prevention technology research.

There is strong global need for the development of Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) that prevent HIV, pregnancy, and/or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, despite decades of research focused on the development of MPTs, numerous research gaps remain, contributing to reproductive health disparities. This commentary will highlight biomedical, socio-behavioral, and implementation science gaps in MPT research. Biomedical gaps and barriers include limited dosage forms, challenges around drug selection and stable coformulation of multiple drugs, and an unclear regulator
