Use of Selected Recommended Clinical Preventive Services - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, United States, 2018.

Clinical preventive services play an important role in preventing deaths, and Healthy People 2020 has set national goals for using clinical preventive services to improve population health (1). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires many health plans to cover certain recommended clinical preventive services without cost-sharing when provided in-network (covered clinical preventive services).* To ascertain prevalence of the use of selected recommended clinical preventive services among persons aged ≥18 years, CDC analyzed data from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveill

Association of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with higher risk of cancer: a behavioral risk factor surveillance system study.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and risk of cancer in young adults. METHODS: We utilized data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a nationally representative US telephone-based survey to identify participants in the age group of 18-55 years who reported a history of ASCVD. These patients were defined as having premature ASCVD. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to study the association between premature ASCVD and cancer including various cancer subtypes. RESUL

Health-Related Quality of Life and Bereavement in the 2019 Georgia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Poor Self-Rated Health (SRHp) is part of a four-item scale for self-assessment. SRH from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) is used to test hypotheses linking population-level well-being influenced by bereavement due to the death of a close friend or relative. By linking the prevalence rates of population-level well-being with exposure to bereavement, we extend our knowledge of this exposure beyond single-person studies. SRHp and bereavement were asked about in the 2019 field survey of 7354 adults aged 18 years and older. Multiple imputation was applied to handle missi

Chronic Disease Disparities by County Economic Status and Metropolitan Classification, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2013.

INTRODUCTION: Racial/ethnic disparities have been studied extensively. However, the combined influence of geographic location and economic status on specific health outcomes is less well studied. This study's objective was to examine 1) the disparity in chronic disease prevalence in the United States by county economic status and metropolitan classification and 2) the social gradient by economic status. The association of hypertension, arthritis, and poor health with county economic status was also explored. METHODS: We used 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. County economi

Assessing population risk for postmenopausal osteoporosis: a new strategy using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

UNLABELLED: Osteoporosis public health measures are hindered by the inability to easily identify subclinical disease. We have now estimated state-specific osteoporosis prevalences using a simple formula (OST Index) to analyze age and weight of 62,882 older women; the prevalences determined are similar to those based on BMD. This new method has potential use for guiding implementation of osteoporosis prevention/treatment programs. INTRODUCTION: Although osteoporosis-related fractures are a major U.S. public health issue, population-based prevention programs have not yet been developed. One con

Cross sectional examination of public perceptions around substance misuse using state behavioral risk factor surveillance system data.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore public sympathy toward individuals with substance misuse, including relationships between that phenomenon and demographic, socioeconomic, and health factors in a single U.S. state. METHODS: Weighted summary statistics and logistic regression analyses were conducted using data from the 2021 Utah Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The outcome measure was derived from a unique question which asked about sympathy toward those misusing substances, which may reflect behaviors indicative of or preceding substance use disorder (SUD). Other measures inc

Self-perceptions of mental health among U.S. Veterans and non-Veterans: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Veteran and other service member sub-populations have an increased likelihood of mental illness. Diagnosed mental health conditions among Veteran populations have been well described. However, direct self-perceptions of mental health have been under-researched. This study examined the association between Veteran status and self-perceived mental health in U.S. adults to provide better monitoring of frequent mental distress among Veteran populations. Methods: The 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) cross-sectional telephone survey data were used in this analysis

Trends in HIV Testing Among Adults in the Deep South: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2017-2023.

HIV testing is an entry point for both HIV prevention and treatment, and the CDC recommends that all adults of reproductive age undergo HIV testing at least once in their lifetime. However, HIV testing rates remain suboptimal. This study analyzed trends in HIV testing using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2017 to 2023 across nine Deep South states-Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Descriptive statistics and Joinpoint linear regression were employed to assess lifetime HIV testing and testing within the p
