Assessment of behavioral and affective symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.

Noncognitive behavioral symptoms occurring during the prior week were studied in 34 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 21 spousal control subjects via caregiver and patient interviews using the Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Delusional or paranoid features were reported in 13 subjects (38%) and hallucinations in six (18%); patients with these psychoticlike symptoms had lower scores on the Folstein's Mini-Mental State Examination. Other behavioral symptoms reported in AD patients included anxiety (50%) and activity d

Sleep disturbances and behavioral symptoms in pediatric Sotos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare overgrowth genetic disease caused by intragenic mutations or microdeletions of the NSD1 gene located on chromosome 5q35. SoS population might present cognitive impairment and a spectrum of behavioral characteristics, with a worse profile in patients with microdeletion. Although patients with SoS are known to have impaired sleep habits, very little data are available. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders (SDs) in a pediatric cohort of patients with SoS and their correlation with neuropsychiatric profiles. METHODS: We inc

Clinicopathological correlates of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms are commonly observed in a majority of demented patients at some time during the course of their illness. Many of these psychiatric manifestations, especially those related to mood, may be early expressions of dementia and/or mild cognitive impairment. The literature suggests that behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are an integral part of the disease process. The dissociation, in many cases, between BPSD and the rather linear decline in cognitive functions suggests that independent pathophysiological mechanisms give rise to these symp

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence of, or associations with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in developing countries. METHODS: Individuals diagnosed as having dementia according to DSM-IV criteria (mild and moderate cases as defined by the Clinical Dementia Rating scale only), together with their main caregiver, were recruited from 21 centers in 17 developing countries. People with dementia were directly assessed with the Community Screening Interview for Dementia and the Geriatric Mental State Schedule (GMS); GMS data were processed by the AGECAT compute

Parental Weight Status and Offspring Behavioral Problems and Psychiatric Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: To assess relations of prepregnancy maternal and paternal obesity with offspring behavioral problems and psychiatric symptoms at 7-8 years in the Upstate KIDS study, a prospective cohort study. STUDY DESIGN: Maternal body mass index (BMI) was calculated from prepregnancy height and weight provided in vital records or self-report at 4 months postpartum. Mothers reported paternal height and weight. At 7-8 years, mothers indicated if their children had been diagnosed with ADHD or anxiety (n = 1915). Additionally, children's behavior was measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Qu

Behavioral and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer's dementia and vascular dementia.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are highly prevalent and represent a significant burden for patients and their caregivers. Early recognition and management of these symptoms is crucial as they are associated with increased risk of institutionalization, impairments in daily functioning, reduced quality of life, and more rapid progression to severe dementia. This chapter will discuss the pathophysiology, proposed diagnostic criteria, clinical features, and management of BPSD, including apathy, depression, agitation/aggression, psychosis, and sleep disturbances. Behavioral symptoms and sleep problems in children with anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are frequently associated with childhood behavioral problems and mental illnesses such as anxiety disorder. To identify promising behavioral targets for pediatric anxiety disorder therapy, we investigated the associations between specific sleep and behavioral problems. METHODS: We conducted retrospective reviews of 105 patients aged 4-12 years who met the DSM-IV criteria for primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (n = 33), separation anxiety disorder (n = 23), social phobia (n = 21), or obsessive compulsive disorder (n = 28). Atypical behavioral and psychiatric symptoms: Neurosyphilis should always be considered.

Syphilis still remains a major health concern worldwide because of the possibility of serious medical and psychological consequences, long-term disability, and death. Neurosyphilis (NS) may occur at any stage of infection. Its clinical presentation has been changing over recent years including- psychiatric and neurocognitive symptoms. Several recent studies have described cases with these symptoms as the principal signs of NS. We present the case of neurosyphilis with a psychiatric presentation characterized by mood disturbance and auditory and visual hallucinations.

Secondhand smoke exposure, parental depressive symptoms and preschool behavioral outcomes.

Little is known about the association of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and behavioral conditions among preschoolers. A cross-sectional analysis was used to examine billing and pharmacy claims from November 2004 to June 2012 linked to medical encounter-level data for 2,441 children from four pediatric community health clinics. Exposure to SHS was associated with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder/ADHD and disruptive behavior disorder/DBD after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Assessment of exposure to SHS and parental depressive symptoms in early childhood may increase provi

[New therapeutic strategies for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia].

Interventional studies, with the aim of reducing the burden of care through drug or non-drug therapies of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), have been scarce. However, we are now able to do pharmacological management for BPSD with new drugs such as atypical neuroleptics, SSRIs, and cholinesterase inhibitors. Delusions of theft are one of the most frequently observed BPSD in patients with AD. In addition, the delusions and ensuing aggression and anxiety are major factors that increase the burden of caregivers. Delusions of theft in patients with AD were eliminated or redu

Managing the behavioral and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia.

As the world's population ages, increasing numbers of patients with dementia can be expected, the signs and symptoms of which can be extremely disruptive. In particular, behavioral and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia reduce the quality of life of carers (usually family members) and increase the cost of care. Conventional neuroleptics have been used for many years in the management of disturbed and disruptive demented patients, although there are few well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating their efficacy. The use of the low-potency neuroleptics is associated with orthostatic

Behavioral abnormalities and psychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease: preliminary findings.

Behavioral abnormalities and psychiatric symptoms were assessed in 178 patients diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease by NINCDS/ADRDA criteria. The subjects were selected from a defined catchment area and therefore were representative of a group of patients with Alzheimer's disease of varying severity. Auditory hallucinations were found in 10%, visual hallucinations in 13%, and delusions in 16%. Symptoms suggestive of depression were reported by 39% of the patients and features of depression observed in 25%. Twenty percent were aggressive, and 7% were sexually disinhibited. Nineteen percent

Glial Cells in Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) affect the majority of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), substantially increasing caregiver burden and the likelihood of institutionalization. The clinical management of BPSD remains challenging because of its poorly understood pathogenesis, the limited efficacy of conventional interventions, and significant safety concerns associated with current treatments. These limitations underscore the urgent need to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop glia-centered treatment strategies. As essential components of the central nervo

Job loss-related complicated grief symptoms: A cognitive-behavioral framework.

In a significant minority of people, involuntarily job loss can result in symptoms of job loss-related complicated grief (JLCG). The present cognitive-behavioral framework is introduced to explain the underlying processes that may lead to the development and maintenance of JLCG symptoms. Three core processes play a central role, namely (1) negative cognitions related to the job loss and misinterpretation of one's grief reactions; (2) anxious and depressive avoidance strategies to cope with the job loss and its consequences; and (3) insufficient integration of the job loss into the autobiograph

Brain Volume Predicts Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms in Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are frequent and troublesome for patients and caregivers. Considering possible preventive approaches, a better understanding of underlying neural correlates of BPSD is crucial. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to assess whether brain regional volume predicts behavioral changes in mild AD. METHODS: This work took part from the PACO study, a multicenter and prospective study that included 252 patients with mild AD from 2009 to 2014. Fifty-three patients were retained. Forty healthy matched control subjects from the ADNI cohort were incl

Current treatment of behavioral and cognitive symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive and behavioral symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease, may occur even in the prodromal stages of the disease, worsen with disease progression, and surpass motor symptoms as the major factors affecting patient quality of life and caregiver burden. The symptoms may be caused by the disease pathology or they may represent adverse effects of treatment, or both etiological factors may contribute. Although many of these symptoms are related to dopaminergic dysfunction or dopaminergic medication, other neurotransmitters are involved as well. Behavioral symptoms including impulse control
