Mental retardation and developmental disabilities research reviews2001eng
This paper summarizes a conference held at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development on December 6-7, 1999, on self-injurious behavior [SIB] in developmental disabilities. Twenty-six of the top researchers in the U.S. from this field representing 13 different disciplines discussed environmental mechanisms, epidemiology, behavioral and pharmacological intervention strategies, neurochemical substrates, genetic syndromes in which SIB is a prominent behavioral phenotype, neurobiological and neurodevelopmental factors affecting SIB in humans as well as a variety of animal models

This study examined the relative efficacy of cognitive-behavioral and behavioral treatment approaches for bulimia nervosa. Female bulimic Ss were randomly assigned to cognitive-behavioral, behavioral, or attention placebo conditions. At posttreatment, 92% of the cognitive-behavioral group, 100% of the behavioral group, and 69% of the nonspecific self-monitoring group were abstinent from binge eating-purging. At 6-month follow-up, 69% of the cognitive-behavioral group, 38% of the behavioral group, and 15% of the nonspecific self-monitoring group were abstinent from binge eating and purging. The

The tremendous increase in interest in eating disorders, and especially in bulimia nervosa, that has occurred since the last 1970s has resulted in a large and contradictory literature about the relationships between eating disorders and addictive disorders, especially alcohol and drug abuse. At first sight, according to the differences observed between these disorders in most of their phenomenological characteristics (age, sex, socio-cultural factors), it may seem difficult to draw a parallel between them. However, studies showed that eating behavior problems, alcohol and drug abuse nowadays s

Early descriptions of the Type A coronary-prone pattern include both nonverbal and motoric signs. Facial behaviors during the Type A Structured Interview of 24 Type A and 24 Type B men were examined using the Facial Action Coding System. In addition, speech components and heart rate reactivity during the Structured Interviews were examined. Among the facial behaviors assessed, two significantly differentiated Type As from Type Bs: Glare and Disgust. The Glare and Disgust facial scores correlated significantly with a number of speech components, most notably Hostility, which has been found to b

Background: Due to the rise in Alzheimer disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (AD/ADRD) in an aging population, millions of caregivers will be at risk for physical and mental health decline. As those they care for already have physical and cognitive impairment, it is crucial that caregivers maintain health-promoting behaviors. Because regular physical activity (PA) prevents functional loss and improves physical health and well-being, understanding how to help caregivers adopt and sustain PA despite unique time, caregiving, and self-efficacy barriers is a pressing public-health priority. BACKGROUND: Behavior change is essential for promoting health and preventing illness; yet, motivating individuals to adopt and maintain healthy behaviors remains a significant challenge. Multiple models have been developed in Psychology and Behavioral Sciences to understand and encourage behavior change, including the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behavior model (COM-B model), the Health Belief Model, the Behavior Change Wheel, the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), nudge theory, and Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs). Among these, the Fogg Behavior Model (FBM), developed by Dr. BJ Fog

What is a 'natural' behavior? I argue that the study of natural behaviors is often the study of the spontaneous behaviors of animals placed in quantifiably different environments. For behavioral generalists such as rodents, humans, and many other species, there may be no such definable construct as a native habitat or 'natural behavior', due to their successful abilities and needs to rapidly adapt to a wide range of different ecosystems. Instead of prioritizing naturalness, it may be more essential to determine objective outcome measures related to specific behaviors; i.e., which sequences of

Eye movements occur when motor neurons (cranial nerves III, IV and VI) discharge and cause contractions of the extraocular muscles. Movements of the eye are influenced by several main factors: the force generated in each muscle, the inertia of the globe, the viscous and elastic properties of the muscles, and the viscoelasticity of the suspensory orbital tissues (all of which constitute the oculomotor plant). Overall, the response of the plant is sluggish, so the innervation to the muscles must have a specific time-course of activation. Otherwise, the movements of the eye would be too slow and

Making lesions in the brain to relieve the distress of mental illness has had a checkered career due to a mixture of misuse and also caution about making permanent lesions in the brain where there was no physical abnormality. However, over the last 10 years a more flexible approach has developed. The method is still in its infancy and very little used. However, GKNS has been shown to be useful for OCD and also some cases of sever anxiety. It has been attempted for depression and anorexia nervosa but at present its role for these conditions remains to be determined.

Behavioral addictions are slowly becoming recognized as a valid category of psychiatric disorder as shown by the recent allocation of pathological gambling to this category in DSM-5. However, several other types of psychiatric disorder proposed to be examples of behavioral addictions have yet to be accorded this formal acknowledgment and are dispersed across other sections of the DSM-5. This brief review marks this important point in the evolution of this concept and looks to future investigation of behavioral addictions with the theoretical frameworks currently being used successfully to inve

The practice of behavioral dermatology encompasses the management of any dermatologic condition for which there is a substantial behavioral or emotional component. Commonly recognized behavioral dermatoses such as acral lick dermatitis, psychogenic alopecia, and hyperesthesia are syndromes rather than discrete diagnoses. Successful patient management is dependent upon integrating physiological, social, and environmental factors which contribute to the clinical manifestation of behavioral dermatoses.

The notion of respiratory behaviour is grounded, among other approaches, on studies of neuronal mechanisms of voluntary breathing, clinical data, conditioning experiments and respiratory sensations. The interactions between cortical centres of voluntary breathing and respiratory neurones in the brain stem are poorly understood: voluntary control operates through the direct action of corticomotor centres on respiratory motoneurones; however these cortical structures may directly act on bulbopontine centres, and therefore indirectly on respiratory motoneurones. Recordings in animals of brain ste

This article focuses on three nutritional problems that are associated with developmental problems in infancy and childhood. Major points are that (a) nutritional problems are often linked to environmental disadvantage, (b) the possibility exists for long-term developmental effects, (c) treatment for undernutrition does not appear to reverse all negative effects, and (d) prevention of nutritional disorders rather than treatment holds the greatest promise for eradicating behavioral and developmental problems.

The contemporary behavior analyst, to operate ethically and effectively, must be aware of many more factors affecting behavior than simple consequences. Although the literature demonstrating the effectiveness of active behavior management is impressive, a compelling argument can be made that a great number of behavior problem seen in individuals with developmental disabilities may be attributable to factors other than consequences. Our experience has been more often than not that physiological, organic, medication, or situational variables are the actual culprits in maladaptive behavior. Indiv
