Berberine induces pleiotropic beneficial effects via hormesis.

Berberine is a phytochemical that has been shown to prevent a spectrum of serious ailments, to slow aging, and to extend lifespans and health spans of animals, demonstrating its pleiotropic effectiveness. Like sulforaphane, metformin, resveratrol, and many other phytochemicals, berberine suppresses the expression of critical etiological factors-particularly oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular damage-involved in the progression of many diseases (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and neurodegenerative disorders) and the aging process. Since the salutary responses elicite

Berberine Inhibits Dengue Virus through Dual Mechanisms.

Mosquito transmitted viruses, particularly those of the genus Flavivirus, are a significant healthcare burden worldwide, especially in tropical and sub-tropical areas. However, effective medicines for these viral infections remains lacking. Berberine (BBR) is an alkaloid found in some plants used in traditional medicines in Southeast Asia and elsewhere, and BBR has been shown to possess anti-viral activities. During a screen for potential application to mosquito transmitted viruses, BBR was shown to have virucidal activity against dengue virus (DENV; IC50 42.87 µM) as well as against Zika viru

Effects of nano-berberine and berberine loaded on green synthesized selenium nanoparticles on cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization of goat sperm.

After cryopreservation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) can damage sperm. Antioxidants are the primary defense against oxidative damage. Berberine is a bioactive alkaloid found in Berberis vulgaris, Curcuma longa, and Ergon grape, and is a potent antioxidant. Due to the negative effects of free radicals in oxidative stress processes, antioxidant chemicals are required to protect sperm. However, berberine has low bioavailability, making it less effective. Loading techniques on nanoparticles and nanotechnology can help overcome this limitation. Selenium nanoparticles were synthesized with barberry

Berberine: A Negentropic Modulator for Multi-System Coordination.

Berberine (BBR), a protoberberine alkaloid with a long history of medicinal use, has consistently demonstrated benefits in glucose-lipid metabolism and inflammatory balance across both preclinical and human studies. These diverse effects are not mediated by a single molecular target but by BBR's capacity to restore network coordination among metabolic, immune, and microbial systems. At the core of this regulation is an AMP-activated Protein Kinase (AMPK)-centered mechanistic hub, integrating signals from insulin and nutrient sensing, Sirtuin 1/3 (SIRT1/3)-mediated mitochondrial adaptation, and

Berberine-induced hypoglycaemia and electrocardiogram interpretation in athletes.

An athletic male in his 40 s presented to the emergency department following a syncopal episode. He was initially found to be hypoglycaemic at 0.9 mmol/L and improved clinically with resuscitation and normalisation of blood sugar. Cardiology was consulted, as his ECG showed sinus bradycardia, incomplete right bundle branch block and first-degree heart block. Medical history revealed that the patient took berberine supplements as a performance-enhancing herbal medication. A literature search showed that berberine-induced hypoglycaemia has previously only been reported in patients with diabetes

In Vitro Inhibitory Effect of Berberine Against Rotavirus.

Although berberine (BBR) is well known as an active constituent in traditional medicines used in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, its potential against viral gastroenteritis has not been specifically reported. This study aims to investigate the antiviral activity of BBR against rotavirus and evaluate its cytotoxicity and pharmacological efficacies, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. Using ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, the saturation concentration of BBR was determined as 2261 μg/mL, indicating that BBR is a poor water-soluble compound. Th

Berberine influences multiple diseases by modifying gut microbiota.

Berberine (BBR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid that is widely distributed in the plant kingdom and is commonly found in Coptis chinensis Franch. It has low bioavailability, but it can interact with gut microbiota and affect a variety of diseases. The effects of BBR in diabetes, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, liver diseases, intestinal diseases, mental disorders, autoimmune diseases, and other diseases are all thought to be related to gut microbiota. This review systematically and comprehensively summarize these interactions and their effects, and describes the changes of gut microbiota after th

Berberine behind the thriller of marked symptomatic bradycardia.

Patients with chronic aortic dissections are at high risk of catheter-induced complications. We report a Berberine is used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia and has a good safety profile. We report a case of a 53-year-old sportsman referred to our hospital for the onset of fatigue and dyspnoea upon exertion after he started berberine to treat hypercholesterolaemia. An electrocardiogram showed sinus bradycardia (45 bpm), first-degree atrioventricular block, and competitive junctional rhythm. An ergometric str

Conjugates of Chloramphenicol Amine and Berberine as Antimicrobial Agents.

In order to obtain antimicrobial compounds with improved properties, new conjugates comprising two different biologically active agents within a single chimeric molecule based on chloramphenicol (CHL) and a hydrophobic cation were synthesized and studied. Chloramphenicol amine (CAM), derived from the ribosome-targeting antibiotic CHL, and the plant isoquinoline alkaloid berberine (BER) are connected by alkyl linkers of different lengths in structures of these conjugates. Using competition binding, double reporter system, and toeprinting assays, we showed that synthesized CAM-Cn-BER compounds b

Identification of the natural product berberine as an antiviral drug.

Drugs targeting the fusion process of viral entry into host cells have been approved for clinical use in the treatment of AIDS. There remains a great need to improve the use of existing drugs for HIV therapy. Berberine is traditionally used to treat diarrhea, bacillary dysentery, and gastroenteritis in clinics, here our research shows that berberine is effective in inhibiting HIV-1 entry. Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis studies reveal that berberine can directly bind to both N36 and C34 to form a novel N36-berberine-C34 complex and effectively block the six-helix bundle formation bet
