BACKGROUND: Berberis plants are widely distributed medicinal herbs with a long history of traditional use worldwide. Their primary active constituents are isoquinoline alkaloids, including berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine, and berbamine, which exhibit promising pharmacological activities in anti-inflammation, antibacterial, hypoglycemic, lipid-regulating, and antitumor effects. However, under specific doses, routes of administration, or individual conditions, these constituents may also induce multi-system toxic reactions, making the safety profile of Berberis plants a critical concern that

Berberis integerrima Bunge is a valuable plant of the Berberidaceae family used in medicine and industry. The properties of the different parts of this plant vary and depend on the distribution of its secondary metabolites, including alkaloids and phenolic compounds. Here, we aimed to evaluate and compare phenolics and alkaloids of the different organs and tissues of B. integerrima. Our results showed that the highest content of phenolic compounds was found in the fruit and leaf, while the total alkaloid level was higher in the root. In the fruit, leaf and stem, the main phenolic acids were ca

Treating BCR-ABL-positive chronic myeloid leukemia remains impeded by the development of clinical resistance to imatinib. It has been demonstrated that berberine, a plant alkaloid, has activity against imatinib-resistant BCR-ABL mutants by inducing autophagic degradation of BCR-ABL, thereby preventing the acquisition of drug-resistant mutations.See related article by Yin et al., p. 4040.

Berberis vulgaris L. (barberry) is a very well-known herb in traditional medicine. Apart from its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, the antilipogenic effect of barberry on the sebaceous glands in animals may further suggest it could be employed as an anti-acne agent. This study examined the effect of oral aqueous extract of barberry on acne vulgaris. Adolescents aged 12-17 years with moderate to severe acne vulgaris were randomly given oral gelatin capsules containing either aqueous extract of dried barberry (600 mg daily for 4 weeks, n = 25) or placebo (n = 24). Many plants of the Berberis genus have been reported pharmacologically to possess anti-diabetic potential, and Berberis calliobotrys has been found to be an inhibitor of α-glucosidase, α-amylase and tyrosinase. Thus, this study investigated the hypoglycemic effects of Berberis calliobotrys methanol extract/fractions using in vitro and In vivo methods. Bovine serum albumin (BSA), BSA-methylglyoxal and BSA-glucose methods were used to assess anti-glycation activity in vitro, while in vivo hypoglycemic effects were determined by oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Moreover, the hypolipidemic and
