This paper is concerned with existential anxiety, as elaborated by Paul Tillich. It is related to and distinguished from neurotic anxiety. The paper is in four sections: a brief historical background of the development of existentialism with particular reference to Heidegger; a discussion of Tillich's thought regarding three basic forms of anxiety associated with death, meaninglessness and condemnation; a description and discussion of the experiences of a young woman with extreme anxiety; (4) a consideration of the case in the light of Tillich's propositions suggests that, although more famili

Bereavement is a common human experience that often involves significant impacts on psychological, emotional and even cognitive functioning. Though various psychological theories have been proposed to conceptualize the grief process, our current understanding of the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms of grief is limited. The present paper proposes a neurocognitive model to understand phenomena in typical grief, which links loss-related reactions to underlying learning and executive processes. We posit that the competitive relationship between the basal ganglia (BG) and circuitry involving th

BACKGROUND: Insomnia symptoms are common following bereavement and may exacerbate severe and protracted grief reactions, such as prolonged grief disorder (PGD). However, typical trajectories of insomnia symptoms and risk factors for having a more chronic insomnia trajectory following bereavement are yet unknown.
METHOD: In the current investigation, 220 recently bereaved (≤6 months post-loss) participants, completed questionnaires assessing sociodemographic and loss-related characteristics, rumination, experiential avoidance and symptoms of (prolonged) grief and depression, on three time-poin

Losing a loved to suicide is one is one of life's most painful experiences. The feelings of loss, sadness, and loneliness experienced after any death of a loved one are often magnified in suicide survivors by feelings of quilt, confusion, rejection, shame, anger, and the effects of stigma and trauma. Furthermore, survivors of suicide loss are at higher risk of developing major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal behaviors, as well as a prolonged form of grief called complicated grief. Added to the burden is the substantial stigma, which can keep survivors away from much ne

Perinatal death entails bereavement for the family and confusion for the care-givers. In the light of a brief theoretical study of grief, the present article reviews the difficulties and complications of parental grief and the propositions for support and counselling. The most recent works in the subject as well as topics for future research are emphasized. Perinatal bereavement is followed by severe complications: depression, psychosis for mothers, mainly following the next live birth; family disagreement; disturbances, running away, drug, suicide among already born or future children, especi

OBJECTIVES:: A sizable minority of those who lose a loved one in hospice will experience symptoms of bereavement-related mental health disorders. Though hospices offer services to bereaved informal caregivers (family members or friends) of patients, little is known about services offered or interest in them. Therefore, we sought to assess services offered by hospice staff and interest expressed by bereaved informal caregivers with symptoms of depression, anxiety, or complicated grief (CG).
METHODS:: De-identified electronic bereavement care charts of 3561 informal caregivers who lost someone

This paper reviews quantitative evaluations of the efficacy of intervention programs designed to reduce the pain and suffering associated with bereavement. After identifying the psychological and physical health impacts of bereavement and outlining the prevalence of detrimental outcomes, we conclude that a minority of bereaved persons experience severe and sometimes lasting consequences, whereas the majority manage to overcome their grief across the course of time. We detail criteria for establishing the efficacy of bereavement intervention and examine the impact of intervention according to t

This study investigates risk factors for suicidal ideation among Turkish bereaved adults, focusing on bereavement-related guilt. Utilizing the Prolonged Grief Scale, Bereavement Guilt Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory's suicide item, 570 bereaved participants were assessed. Suicidal ideation prevalence was found to be 20.2%. Higher rates of low income, single status, and unnatural death, as well as younger ages of the bereaved and deceased, were observed in the suicidal ideation group. Additionally, significantly elevated scores on the Prolonged Grief Scale and Bereavement Guilt Scale subsc

OBJECTIVES: The death of a child from cancer is a devastating event with long-term psychological and social consequences for parents. While bereavement support is increasingly recognised as a standard of care in paediatric oncology, structured programmes remain limited and heterogeneous.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of bereaved parents of paediatric oncology patients treated at our institution. A structured questionnaire, developed by a multidisciplinary team, explored experiences with bereavement initiatives and preferences for supportive activities.
RESULTS: Of 156 questi

This qualitative study explores the bereavement experiences of 12 surviving siblings in India, focusing on familial, societal, and cultural influences. Six themes emerged: "The Demanding Familial Role," "Isolation That Accompanies the Grief," "Damaging Impact of Society," "Positive Role of Friends and Family," "Support Systems," and "Continuing Bonds." Participants often felt the burden of supporting their parents, leading to personal grief suppression and isolation, exacerbated by societal stigmas. Conversely, empathetic friends, supportive extended family, and professional resources like the

When grief over the death of a loved one becomes complicated, protracted and circular, ruminative counterfactual thinking in which the bereaved relentlessly but vainly seeks to somehow reverse the tragedy of the loss often plays a contributory role in sustaining the person's suffering. In this article we summarize the growing evidence implicating this cognitive process in interfering with meaning reconstruction following loss, and identify four foci for counterfactual, "if only" cognition, directed at the self, the deceased, relevant others, or the circumstances of the death itself. We then il

BACKGROUND: Cryptorchidism (undescended testis) is a common anomaly with largely unexplained etiology. Animal studies have suggested maternal emotional stress as a potential risk factor, but this has not been studied in humans. We aimed to investigate whether maternal bereavement due to the death of a close relative in the antenatal period increases the occurrence of cryptorchidism in the offspring.
METHODS: In a population-based cohort, we studied death of a close relative as the exposure and cryptorchidism entries in nationwide medical registries as the outcome. Danish national registries i

BACKGROUND: Pre-DSM-III (where DSM is Diagnostic and Statistical Manual), a series of studies demonstrated that major depressive syndromes were common after bereavement and that these syndromes often were transient, not requiring treatment. Largely on the basis of these studies, a decision was made to exclude the diagnosis of a major depressive episode (MDE) if symptoms could be "better accounted for by bereavement than by MDE" unless symptoms were severe and very impairing. Thus, since the publication of DSM-III in 1980, the official position of American Psychiatry has been that recent bereav

The bereaved are a population at high risk for the development of subsequent emotional and physical illness. This paper describes a preventive program for families of cardiovascular surgery and oncology patients facing possible or inevitable death. The purpose of the program is prevention or redlction of the negative consequences of unresolved grief. The social worker's prior relationship with the family is used to provide advance preparation for possible or anticipated death, immediate intervention at the time a death occurs, preparation for the course of the normal grief reaction, and outpat

BACKGROUND: Problematic alcohol use (PAU) is highly prevalent in the United States. Although bereavement, a highly stressful and ubiquitous experience across the lifespan, is believed to increase the risk for PAU based on a small number of studies, research using large diverse samples of bereaved adults has yet to be conducted. Therefore, relations between PAU and bereavement remain poorly understood, hampering the reach and effectiveness of alcohol interventions. The current study addresses this limitation by investigating rates and correlates of PAU and service utilization among a large nati
