Incremental Influence of Betrayal Trauma and Personality Traits on PTSD Symptoms.

Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common reactions to trauma. One factor that influences the manifestation of PTSD symptoms is the type of trauma experienced. Traumas perpetrated by someone on whom the trauma survivor trusts and relies on for support (i.e., betrayal traumas) are especially predictive of PTSD symptoms. However, the degree to which this is true differs somewhat across men and women. Another factor that influences PTSD symptoms is personality, which is most often operationalized in terms of discrete personality traits. Among these traits, Neuroticism (the tende

Considerations of Dissociation, Betrayal Trauma, and Complex Trauma in the Treatment of Incest.

Child sexual abuse committed by a parent (incest) is related to particularly severe physical and psychological symptoms across the life span. Incest is associated with low self-esteem, self-loathing, feelings of contamination, worthlessness, and helplessness, as well as somatization and low self-efficacy. A child's negative constructions often are attempts to derive some meaning that justifies the incest, such as, "it is because of my badness that it happens to me." Survival often involves voluntary or involuntary disconnection from self, others, and the environment, or compartmentalization of

Betrayal Trauma in Youth and Negative Communication During a Stressful Task.

Attachment-based theories and related research illustrate that emotion regulation develops in the context of a secure relationship between a child and caregiver. When a secure bond is broken, such as in the context of betrayal trauma, children fail to develop necessary emotion regulation skills which can lead to an array of relational problems. The current study examined the relations between betrayal trauma history, type of communication during a stressful interpersonal laboratory task, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of trauma-exposed adolescents. Results showed that adolesce

Posttraumatic stress disorder treatment outcomes for events related to institutional betrayal.

Institutional betrayal can occur when an organization fails to prevent or respond appropriately to traumatic events perpetrated within its ranks. This experience of violated trust can exacerbate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and related sequelae. The primary aim of this quality assurance project was to preliminarily assess whether our standard treatment approach and treatment dosing (single-treatment protocol, 12-15 sessions) was sufficient for patients presenting with institutional betrayal. We compared outcomes for individuals presenting for care following institutional betra

"It Will Always Feel Worse Because it Comes with That Added 'Betrayal'": Intersectionality Praxis and Black Young Women Survivors' Perspectives on Cultural Betrayal Trauma Theory.

Because of interlocking oppressions of racism and sexism (e.g. intersectionality), Black women's experiences of high rates of sexual violence are often ignored. A critical Black feminist framework, cultural betrayal trauma theory (CBTT) examines within-group violence in the Black community, which has compounding harm due to inequality. Though quantitative research has found support for CBTT, Black young women survivors' perspectives have not been examined. Therefore, the purpose of the current exploratory study was to engage in intersectionality praxis to qualitatively examine Black young wome

From betrayal to support: Toward trans refuge in higher education.

U.S.-based trans people and their families are increasingly targeted with discrimination and hate at the federal, state, and local levels. Some are relocating in search of safety and access to care, often to "shield" and/or "trans refuge" states. Shield states offer legal protection for anyone seeking or providing gender-affirming medical care. Some states have also legally enshrined trans people as a protected class (i.e., trans refuge states). However, laws and policies alone are unlikely to transform culture. These states have a responsibility to consider not just legal protections but also

Dealing with betrayal in close relationships: does commitment promote forgiveness?

This work complements existing research regarding the forgiveness process by highlighting the role of commitment in motivating forgiveness. On the basis of an interdependence-theoretic analysis, the authors suggest that (a) victims' self-oriented reactions to betrayal are antithetical to forgiveness, favoring impulses such as grudge and vengeance, and (b) forgiveness rests on prorelationship motivation, one cause of which is strong commitment. A priming experiment, a cross-sectional survey study, and an interaction record study revealed evidence of associations (or causal effects) of commitmen

From guardians to traitors: molecular mechanisms of tumor-induced T cell betrayal.

As the core effector cells of the adaptive immune system, T cells play a crucial role in the body's anti-tumor immune responses. However, various toxic factors widely present in the tumor microenvironment (TME), including metabolic abnormalities, mitochondrial transfer phenomena, and diverse toxic mediators, can exert "poisoning" effects on T cells through complex and diverse mechanisms, consequently leading to T cell intoxication. In this state, their roles within the TME undergo profound transformation, with exhaustion being the most typical manifestation. This exhaustion is characterized by

Gendered Sexual Violence: Betrayal Trauma, Dissociation, and PTSD in Diverse College Students.

Young adults' transition into college includes risk for onset of mental health problems and sexual violence, particularly for women. Compared to men and boys, women and girls across the lifespan are more likely to be sexually abused, with the perpetrators often being someone close to them. High betrayal trauma is linked to varied mental health outcomes. Despite literature depth, many samples are not ethnically diverse, which results in uncertainty about the generalizability of these findings outside of majority White American populations. The purpose of the current study is to assess gender an

Betray my trust, shame on me: Shame, dissociation, fear, and betrayal trauma.

Recent research suggests that betrayal is a fundamental dimension of trauma that may be a major factor contributing to posttraumatic distress (Freyd & Birrell, 2013). In the current study using a college student sample of female trauma survivors, (N = 124; 79% Caucasian; mean age = 20.40, SD = 3.60), we examined the contribution of high- and low-betrayal trauma history to shame, dissociation, and fear responses to threat. We hypothesized that (a) overall, shame and dissociation would be higher following interpersonal compared with noninterpersonal threat; (b) high- but not low-betrayal trauma

Chutes and Ladders: A Grounded Theory Analysis of Commitment and Betrayal in Intimate Relationships.

The purpose of this study was to use qualitative grounded theory methods to explore how commitment and betrayal are experienced in intimate relationships. Participants were recruited through convenience and theoretical sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and constructivist grounded theory methods were used to code the data and generate analytic categories that were arranged into a process model. Findings suggest that commitment is experienced through five main dimensions: fidelity, prioritization, relational investment, wholeheartedness, and endurance. Betrayal was experienced

Periodontal immune homeostasis: neutrophils as guardians and betrayers, and strategies for precision modulation.

The health of periodontal tissues fundamentally depends on a delicate, dynamic immune homeostasis; disruption of this balance constitutes the pathological basis driving the initiation and progression of chronic periodontitis. Due to their high heterogeneity and phenotypic plasticity, neutrophils play multifaceted roles in maintaining periodontal homeostasis and driving disease progression. Under homeostatic conditions, through precisely regulated mechanisms including chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and extracellular trap formation, neutrophils actively clear microorganisms and sustain tissue toleran

Development, Reliability, and Initial Validation of the Fear of Institutional Betrayal Questionnaire.

Fear of institutional betrayal is a new conceptual extension of the original institutional betrayal framework. The original framework is a way of making sense of, and giving credibility to, the experiences of harm perpetrated by institutions. The original authors developed a checklist of institutional actions or inactions that harm survivors of sexual violence. Building on this work, fear of institutional betrayal is an attitudinal construct that represents the belief that post-secondary institutions will inevitably fail to prevent or acceptably respond to campus sexual violence, and that enga

The elephant in the room: Is betrayal trauma associated with borderline personality disorder?

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been found to be closely linked to childhood trauma, particularly betrayal trauma. AIM: In our study, we aimed to investigate the association between betrayal trauma and anxiety among young adults. METHODS: We assessed a total of 305 young adults using a Google form utilizing three assessment tools: the 10-item McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD), the 12-item Brief Betrayal Trauma Survey (BBTS), and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) to evaluate borderline personality traits, betrayal tra

Sexual revictimization: double betrayal and the risk associated with dissociative amnesia.

This study aimed to identify new treatment targets in order to develop more empirically informed initiatives to prevent sexual revictimization. A retrospective Web-based survey employing a mixed-methods design attracted a self-selecting sample of 481 community respondents, 183 of whom indicated a history of childhood sexual abuse. Seventy-four percent were females whose ages ranged from 16 to 69 years (mean = 31.2 years). Betrayal trauma referred to CSA committed by a trusted perpetrator (often caregivers). Disclosure experiences in childhood were reported though open-dialogue boxes. Double be

Betrayal experiences among individuals living in war zones: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Betrayal, a component of moral injury, refers to the harm caused by the deliberate actions or inaction of someone trusted, violating one's values and beliefs. This study examines the impact of betrayal experiences-specifically perceptions of failure by political and military leadership-on mental health outcomes among civilians in Israeli conflict zones, focusing on anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It also explores the relationship between betrayal and war-related factors such as traumatic loss, forced displacement, and income loss, along with the roles

Emotional Betrayal From Child Sexual Abuse Measure (EBSCAM): A psychometric analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the psychometric properties of a new scale, the Emotional Betrayal from Child Sexual Abuse Measure (EBCSAM), which assesses feelings of betrayal in adult survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). Emotional betrayal is examined with respect to the perpetrator as well as others in the survivor's immediate environment (i.e., family, friends, etc.) during the time of the abuse. METHOD: A sample of 342 CSA survivors were anonymously surveyed online in order to examine the psychometric properties of the EBCSAM. RESULTS: The original 16-item measure did not produce a goo

Psychological Outcomes of Within-Group Sexual Violence: Evidence of Cultural Betrayal.

Cultural betrayal trauma theory is a new framework for understanding trauma-related mental health outcomes in immigrant and minority populations. The purpose of the current study is to empirically test cultural betrayal trauma theory. We hypothesized that the association between within-group sexual violence and mental health outcomes would be stronger for minorities. Participants (N = 368) were minority and majority college students, who completed online measures of sexual violence victimization and mental health outcomes. A MANOVA revealed that the link between within-group sexual violence an

Betrayal trauma theory of dissociative experiences: stroop and directed forgetting findings.

According to betrayal trauma theory, many survivors of childhood sexual abuse learn to compartmentalize (i.e., dissociate) their traumatic experiences from conscious awareness by dividing attention. This theory predicts that those who dissociate extensively should be at an advantage during dual tasks. Using a modified Stroop task in Experiment 1 and a direct forgetting task in Experiment 2, we tried to replicate Freyd and colleagues' finding that high-dissociative people perform better under dual task conditions. However, in Experiment 1 we found that, relative to low-dissociative people, high
