Implicit assumptions and interpretation bias in youth with severe, chronic social phobia.

Interpretation bias and dysfunctional social assumptions are proposed to play a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of social phobia (SP), especially in youth. In this study, we aimed to investigate disorder-specific implicit assumptions of rejection and implicit interpretation bias in youth with severe, chronic SP and healthy controls (CG). Twenty-seven youth with SP in inpatient/day-care treatment (M age = 15.6 years, 74% female) and 24 healthy controls (M age = 15.7 years, 54% female) were included. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) and the Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP

Pilot investigation into the influence of racial implicit bias on physician clinical reasoning.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence for the impact of racial implicit bias and clinical reasoning remains conflicting. Our inability to characterize the relationship between racial implicit bias and clinical reasoning (CR) precludes development of comprehensive interventions seeking to address the impact of racial implicit bias on clinical encounters. To address this gap, we conducted a simulation-based investigation with clinical presentations with known health disparities, cognitive stressors common to clinical environments, and Black and White standardized patients (SPs). METHODS: We recruited 75 early-c

Implicit Bias in Counseling for Permanent Contraception: Historical Context and Recommendations for Counseling.

We provide an overview of the causes, manifestations, and potential mitigating steps regarding implicit bias in counseling for permanent contraception. The historical context of sterilization abuses and the implications of these on society's notions of fitness for parenthood are reviewed. We present contemporary examples of contraceptive coercion and discuss the impact of implicit bias from health care providers. Finally, we outline steps for ensuring a patient-centered shared decision-making ethical approach to permanent contraceptive counseling.

Discrepancies of Implicit and Explicit Self-Esteem as Predictors of Attributional Bias and Paranoia.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to examine the association of implicit self-esteem, explicit self-esteem and their interaction with paranoia and attributional bias. The relationship of the size and the direction of the discrepancy between implicit and explicit self-esteem with paranoia and attributional bias was examined. METHODS: A total of 128 female college students participated. We administered the Implicit Association Test to assess implicit self-esteem, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to measure explicit self-esteem. Paranoia Scale was used, and the attributional bias was assesse

Implicit and explicit memory bias for threat in post-traumatic stress disorder.

We investigated explicit (cued recall) and implicit (word completion) memory in Vietnam combat veterans with (n = 24) and without (n = 24) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Half of the subjects in each group encoded combat, social threat, positive, and neutral words elaboratively, whereas the others encoded these words nonelaboratively. On the cued recall test, under both encoding conditions, both groups recalled more combat words than other words. However, difference scores obtained by subtracting the mean recall for neutral words from the mean recall scores for the other words revealed

Slow-wave sleep in the TPJ is linked to individual differences in implicit bias.

Implicit biases can profoundly impact social interactions and decision-making processes. Here, we investigate whether the heterogeneity of implicit racial bias can be explained by interindividual differences in the intracortical distribution of slow-wave activity (SWA), a marker of sleep depth. Using high-density EEG, we recorded sleep data from 52 healthy adults (27 females) during a typical night's sleep in their homes. Implicit racial bias was measured using the race Implicit Association Test (IAT). Whole-brain corrected source localization analysis identified a significant association betw

Implicit bias to food and body cues in eating disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Rigid, restrictive eating patterns, fear of gaining weight, body image concerns, but also binge eating episodes with loss of control leading to overweight, at times followed by compensatory measures to control weight, are typical symptoms in eating disorders (EDs). The regulation of food intake in EDs may underlie explicit processes that require cognitive insight and conscious control or be steered by implicit mechanisms that are mostly automatic, rapid, and associated with affective-rather than cognitive-processing. While introspection is not capable of assessing implicit response

Reduction of implicit cognitive bias with cathodal tDCS to the left prefrontal cortex.

Implicit associations can interfere with cognitive operations and behavioral decisions without direct intention. Enhancement of neural activity with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was proposed to reduce implicit associations by means of improved cognitive control. However, a targeted reduction of distractive implicit associations by inhibitory cathodal tDCS, recently shown in spatial-numerical associations, provides an interesting alternative approach to support goal-directed behavior with transcranial brain stimulation. To test this rationale with a sham-controlled cros

Evidence of Implicit Bias Against People Experiencing Homelessness Among Emergency Medical Services Providers.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel provide medical care for many low-income and underserved individuals, including people experiencing homelessness (PEH). However, whereas EMS providers report positive explicit attitudes toward PEH, when seeking care, PEH report being the target of discrimination, which may reflect automatic or implicit prejudice that EMS providers hold toward them. To examine if EMS providers hold implicit prejudice toward PEH, 42 certified emergency medical technician (EMT) workers from Southern Arizona completed an Implicit Associations Test (IAT). The results showe

Implicit Bias in Large Language Model Diagnosis of Eating Disorders: Experimental Vignette Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in mental health applications, yet growing evidence suggests they encode algorithmic biases that influence clinical outputs. Because these models now mediate patient-facing decisions, such biases carry the potential for direct harm. Whether they systematically affect psychiatric diagnosis across demographic groups remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine whether LLMs exhibit implicit demographic biases when generating psychiatric diagnoses. METHODS: We developed 1152 synthetic clinical vignettes using a ma

Implicit Negativity Bias Leads to Greater Loss Aversion and Learning during Decision-Making.

It is widely accepted there is the existence of negativity bias, a greater sensitivity to negative emotional stimuli compared with positive ones, but its effect on decision-making would depend on the context. In risky decisions, negativity bias could lead to non-rational choices by increasing loss aversion; yet in ambiguous decisions, it could favor reinforcement-learning and better decisions by increasing sensitivity to punishments. Nevertheless, these hypotheses have not been tested to date. Our aim was to fill this gap. Sixty-nine participants rated ambiguous emotional faces (from the NimSt

Drinkers' memory bias for alcohol picture cues in explicit and implicit memory tasks.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol cues can bias attention and elicit emotional reactions, especially in drinkers. Yet, little is known about how alcohol cues affect explicit and implicit memory processes, and how memory for alcohol cues is affected by acute alcohol intoxication. METHODS: Young adult participants (N=161) were randomly assigned to alcohol, placebo, or control beverage conditions. Following beverage consumption, they were shown neutral, emotional and alcohol-related pictures cues. Participants then completed free recall and repetition priming tasks to test explicit and implicit memory, respec

Bias in a blink: Shedding light on implicit attitudes toward patients with a cleft lip.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that patients with cleft lip and/or palate may be stigmatized in society. The objective of this study was to use an implicit association test to evaluate the subconscious biases of non-health care providers and orthodontists against patients with a repaired cleft lip (CL). METHODS: Respondents participated in an implicit association test. Pictures of patients with CL and controls were shown to participants, along with terms representing positive and negative attributes. Participants were prompted to match pictures to the attributes. Implicit and explicit anti-fat bias: The role of weight-related attitudes and beliefs.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of anti-fat bias in American society comes at a great cost to the health and well-being of people who are overweight or obese. A better understanding of the correlates of anti-fat bias would inform development of interventions for reducing anti-fat bias. Based on three theoretical perspectives, this study tested the relation between attitudes and beliefs about weight and anti-fat bias (implicit and explicit): (1) The belief that one is like people who are fat (social identity theory). (2) The belief that one can control her/his weight (attribution theory

Implicit race bias decreases the similarity of neural representations of black and white faces.

Implicit race bias has been shown to affect decisions and behaviors. It may also change perceptual experience by increasing perceived differences between social groups. We investigated how this phenomenon may be expressed at the neural level by testing whether the distributed blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) patterns representing Black and White faces are more dissimilar in participants with higher implicit race bias. We used multivoxel pattern analysis to predict the race of faces participants were viewing. We successfully predicted the race of the faces on the basis of BOLD activatio

Subtract to solve: a pilot study testing implicit and experiential interventions against additive bias.

When seeking to transform an object, idea, or situation, individuals often default to adding new components rather than removing existing ones, a cognitive tendency known as additive bias. Although recently formalized in cognitive science, strategies to mitigate this bias remain limited. This pilot study investigated the potential of the additive bias Implicit Association Test (ad-IAT) as a scalable educational tool for raising awareness of additive bias and promoting subtractive thinking. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: ad-IAT, experiential learning, or c

Do clinicians have an implicit bias in favor of specific disease over nonspecific illness?

BACKGROUND: Some patients and clinicians have an explicit preference to associate symptoms with specific pathology. This bias can manifest in relatively specific names for illnesses with nonspecific symptoms and signs such as radial tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injury, and fibromyalgia. This might be a manifestation of a desire for a sense of control and measurable as an unconscious bias for specific over non-specific illnesses. QUESTIONS: There are no factors independently associated with orthopedic surgeon unconscious bias against non-specific illness; Is there a relationship between

Is your own team against you? Implicit bias and interpersonal regard in criminal defense.

Racial disparities in conviction and incarceration have been lamentable features of legal systems for a long time. Research has addressed the attitudes and decisions of police, prosecutors, jurors, and judges in contributing to these disparities, but very little attention has been paid to defendants' own team members-i.e., criminal defense attorneys. Researchers have specifically identified this as a "scholarly gap". To address this, we conducted an empirical study of criminal defense attorneys practicing in forty-three U.S. states (N = 327). The attorneys completed both an implicit measure de
