Challenges and opportunities in managing biodegradable plastic waste: A review.

Biodegradable plastics have certain challenges in a waste management perspective. The existing literature reviews fail to provide a consolidated overview of different process steps of biodegradable plastic waste management and to discuss the support provided by the existing legislation for the same. The present review provides a holistic overview of these process steps and a comprehensive relative summary of 13 existing European Union (EU) laws related to waste management and circular economy, and national legislations plus source separation guidelines of 13 countries, to ensure the optimal us

Research progress on degradation of biodegradable micro-nano plastics and its toxic effect mechanism on soil ecosystem.

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are known to decompose into micro-nano plastics (BMNPs) more readily than conventional plastics (CPs). Given the environmental risks posed by BMNPs in soil ecosystems, their impact has garnered increasing attention. However, research focusing on the toxic effects of BMNPs on soils remains relatively limited. The degradation process and duration of BMNPs in soil are influenced by numerous factors, which directly impact the toxic effects of BMNPs. This highlights the urgent need for further research. In this context, this review delineates the classification of BPs,

The hidden cost of green food packaging: Biodegradable plastics release more micro/nanoplastics and enhance PFAS co-exposure.

The global transition toward biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) aims to mitigate plastic pollution, yet their safety under realistic food service conditions remains underexplored. This study systematically assessed the release of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) from biodegradable (PLA, PBS, PBAT) versus conventional (PP, PE) FCMs under simulated takeout scenarios. Results demonstrated that biodegradable FCMs released significantly higher particle loads-approximately 10-fold more MPs and 2-fold more NPs-than their conventional counterparts. This release was notably exacerbat

Direct polymer-to-polymer upcycling of mixed PET/PBT wastes into biodegradable plastics: an environmental techno-economic assessment.

Upcycling of post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) typically relies on depolymerization. However, depolymerization can be energy-intensive and operationally complex, undermining the benefits of upcycling. In this study, we designed a direct polymer-to-polymer copolymerization process that converts mixed PET/PBT waste into biodegradable copolyesters. We evaluated the effects of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) loading (20-40 wt%) and the inclusion of a glass fiber removal step on process performance. To this end, we conducted an environmental

Biodegradation in Freshwater: Comparison Between Compostable Plastics and Their Biopolymer Matrices.

Plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems is an increasing environmental concern, prompting the search for biodegradable polymer (BP) alternatives. However, their degradation in natural aquatic environments remains poorly investigated and understood. This four-month in situ study compared the degradation in a lentic freshwater ecosystem of two compostable items, Mater-Bi® shopping bag and disposable dish, with their respective pure polymer matrices, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA). Additionally, biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate

Thermoplastic silk-plasticizer membranes for biodegradable artificial corneal endothelium.

Corneal endothelial dysfunction (CED) induces stromal edema through aqueous influx, disrupting collagen organization and causing corneal opacity, with chronic cases progressing to fibrosis. As a major cause of corneal blindness, CED currently requires corneal transplantation for treatment. However, the scarcity of human donors necessitates the urgent development of artificial corneal endothelial transplant materials. Previously reported non-biodegradable polymer materials suffer from inadequate adhesion and poor water barrier efficiency, with long-term implantation potentially causing foreign-

Treatment of biowaste commingled with biodegradable bioplastic films using Black Soldier Fly larvae: Generation and fate of micro-plastics.

The use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae is emerging as a promising alternative for biowaste (i.e. food waste) treatment, generating larval biomass and process residues, suitable for use as animal feed and fertilizer, respectively. In line with an increasing use of starch-based bioplastics in food packaging, the presence of these biopolymers and associated biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) in food waste is expected to rise. Knowledge of the generation of BMPs and their fate in the BSF treatment process is scarce, or indeed, completely lacking in the case of small-sized BMPs (<50 μm). The pre

The impact of biodegradable plastics on methane and carbon dioxide emissions in soil ecosystems: a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy approach.

Biodegradable plastics (BPs), promising eco-friendliness, raise environmental concerns as they degrade into numerous microplastics (Bio-MPs). The impact of Bio-MPs on methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in soil ecosystems remains largely unexplored. Utilizing Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we innovatively designed a circulating system, integrating a long optical-path gas cell with a static chamber for continuous and convenient CH4/CO2 monitoring in paddy soils with the addition of Bio-MPs (PBAT). On the 7th day of incubation, we observed a significant increase in

Biodegradation of sachet water polyethylene plastic waste using bacteria isolates.

Introduced in the early 1990s, Nigeria's most consumed potable water packaging material is dumped indiscriminately into various environments despite concerns about its harmful effects on these environments. The study was designed to isolate and characterise potential microbial degraders and their degradation potentials using various methods. Various environmental samples (soil, sediment, and marine water) were obtained using standard protocols. Microplastic from the sachet water (SW) plastic was generated mechanically using a sterile grater and used to enrich the various samples from which pot

Biodegradation of a phthalate plasticizer, di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), by Sphingobium chungbukense.

In this study, di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) was efficiently degraded by Sphingobium chungbukense KCTC 2955. The optimal conditions for DINP (100 mg L(-1)) degradation by S. chungbukense in a mineral salts medium were found to be pH 7.0, 30 degrees C, and stirring at 200 rpm. The maximum specific rate of DINP degradation was found to be concentration dependent, with a maximum of 4.12 mg DINP L(-1) h(-1). DINP was transformed rapidly by S. chungbukense, with the formation of monoisononyl phthalate (MIP) and phthalic acid, which subsequently degraded further. These results highlight the potential

Biodegradation of plastics by a novel microorganism isolated from the working area of a plastic recycling company in Gebze, Kocaeli, Türkiye.

Plastics have become a major environmental concern today, primarily due to their extensive use and the subsequent inability to be effectively recycled. Conventional recycling methods for plastics have been shown to be both inefficient and environmentally detrimental. As a result, research is ongoing to develop more sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of degrading plastics. In the present study, a microorganism capable of using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a carbon and energy source was isolated by screening of contaminated water, soil and plastic samples collected from the working

Harnessing fungi and bacteria to speed up the biodegradation of plastic mulch films.

Plastics and microplastics are pervasive in agricultural systems, underscoring the need for effective mitigation strategies. Here, we explored microbial treatments to accelerate the degradation of plastic mulch films composed of commercial (LDPE-m) and additive-free (LDPE-p) low-density polyethylene and a blend containing polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate and polylactic acid (PBAT-PLA). We tested four microbial treatments: a compost-derived microbial community (m1), a multi-strain Aspergillus consortium with Peribacillus simplex (B. simplex) (m2), an Aspergillus-only fungal consortium (m3)

Methanol biotransformation for the production of biodegradable plastic monomer L-lactate in yeast.

Methanol is an ideal feedstock for biomanufacturing, and production of the biodegradable plastic monomer lactate from methanol is a promising approach for mitigating white pollution. However, it is challenging to engineer microbes for lactate production from methanol because of strong competition between product synthesis and cell growth. Here, Ogataea polymorpha is rewired to synthesize L-lactate from methanol, where the cofactor ratio of NADPH/NADP+ is higher than that of NADH/NAD+. By engineering gene expression, enhancing cell viability, modifying cofactor homeostasis, and performing mitoc

Comparing the effects of conventional and biodegradable plastic mulch particles and their leachates on Chironomus riparius.

Agricultural mulches are commonly employed to enhance crop yields, these mulches are typically made of conventional plastic such as polyethylene (PE). As an alternative, mulches can be made of biodegradable plastics. However, both plastics are prone to weathering, causing plastic fragments and unintended leachate to end up in the adjacent water systems. Plastic leachates can contain various chemical additives depending on plastic type, yet their effects are poorly studied. Here, we exposed Chironomus riparius larvae through the water phase to artificially weathered plastic particles of convent

Electrocatalytic CO2 Upgrading to Biodegradable Plastic by Bromine-Assisted C2H4 Oxidation and Polymerization.

The electrochemical upgrading of carbon dioxide (CO2) to long-chain value-added products has remained challenging due to the complex reaction pathways with sluggish carbon-carbon coupling kinetics. Although ethylene (C2H4), a major CO2 electroreduction product, may serve as a potential alternative for the coupling and carbon-chain elongation, the efficient C2H4 oxidation under ambient conditions and selective control of the oxidation level still represent two main bottlenecks for realizing long-chain products. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient tandem electrochemical approach for synthesizing

From insect biodegradation to microbial upcycling: A closed-loop framework for plastic waste valorization.

Global plastic waste management requires low-energy, value-oriented strategies capable of handling heterogeneous and contaminated feedstocks. Insect-mediated plastic degradation offers a promising biological route, as larvae physically fragment plastics and, together with oxidative reactions, gut microorganisms, and host-derived enzymes, promote polymer depolymerization under mild conditions. However, this process generates frass containing residual micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), which limits the direct reuse of insect residues and may cause secondary environmental release.
