Microalgae and cyanobacteria as biological agents of biocathodes in biofuel cells.

Biofuel cells (BFCs) are an environmental friendly technology that can simultaneously perform wastewater treatment and generate electricity. Peculiarities that hinder the widespread introduction of this technology are the need to use artificial aeration and chemical catalysts, which make the technology expensive and cause secondary pollution. A possible solution to this issue is the use of biocathodes with microalgae and cyanobacteria. Microalgae in the biocathodic chamber produce oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. Various BFC technologies with algal biocathode (microbial fuel cells, mi

Biofuel and co-products from algae solvent extraction.

This study reports a novel method of using algae biomass as a source of lipid and various other co-products. Solvent-based extraction techniques could yield a number of products simultaneously. Further, the study focuses on all possible characterization and utilization of the three layers obtained from chloroform-methanol extraction of lipids. The lipid from the chloroform layer was transesterified for Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) production. The fatty acid methyl esters derived by oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and phytol were majorly analysed by GC-MS. The methanol layer was ana

Characterization and structural analysis of alcohol-fractionated lignin biofuels processed at ambient temperature.

This study introduces Cold-processed Lignin in (M)ethanol Oil (CLEO/CLiMO), a novel biofuel technology derived from the alcohol-fractionation of lignin at ambient temperatures, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional marine fuels. The production process achieved solid loadings of up to 60 wt% lignin and a volumetric energy density 39 % higher than pure alcohols. Lignin concentrations above 30 wt% promoted colloidal stability through the proposed formation of a spanning network of lignin aggregates, associated with a 100-fold increase of viscosity. Additionally, we observed a decreas

Laboratory Production of Biofuels and Biochemicals from a Rapeseed Oil through Catalytic Cracking Conversion.

The work is based on a reported study which investigates the processability of canola oil (bio-feed) in the presence of bitumen-derived heavy gas oil (HGO) for production of transportation fuels through a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) route. Cracking experiments are performed with a fully automated reaction unit at a fixed weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 8 hr(-1), 490-530 °C, and catalyst/oil ratios of 4-12 g/g. When a feed is in contact with catalyst in the fluid-bed reactor, cracking takes place generating gaseous, liquid, and solid products. The vapor produced is condensed and colle

Synthetic biology development of microbial strains for liquid biofuel production.

As a renewable energy source, biofuels can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and effectively lower greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating the global climate change issue. The production of liquid biofuels primarily relies on the biosynthetic processes of microorganisms. While many natural strains possess specific metabolic capabilities to produce liquid biofuels, their performance often fails to meet the demands of industrial-scale production. Therefore, genetic engineering to construct strains with optimized metabolic pathways has become an inevitable approach. Synthetic biology technology has

Laboratory Conversion of Cultivated Oleaginous Organisms into Biocrude for Biofuel Applications.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a thermochemical process for the wet conversion of oleaginous microorganisms and other biomass and carbon rich feedstocks to biofuels under subcritical conditions. It is a novel green process that produces biocrude as a primary product along with other by-products which include gases, aqueous phase coproduct (ACP) and solid residues. Here we describe in detail the protocols for the conversion of biomass to biocrude through HTL and separation, quantification and analyses of HTL products.

An enzymatic glucose/O2 biofuel cell operating in human blood.

Enzymatic biofuel cells (BFCs) may power implanted medical devices and will rely on the use of glucose and O2 available in human bodily fluids. Other than well-established experiments in aqueous buffer, little work has been performed in whole human blood because it contains numerous inhibiting molecules. Here, we tested our BFCs in 30 anonymized, random and disease-free whole human blood samples. We show that by designing our anodic and cathodic bioelectrocatalysts with osmium based redox polymers and home-made enzymes we could reach a high selectivity and biofunctionnality. After optimization

Atmospheric emission of reactive nitrogen during biofuel ethanol production.

This paper evaluates emissions to the atmosphere of biologically available nitrogen compounds in a region characterized by intensive sugar cane biofuel ethanol production. Large emissions of NH3 and NOx, as well as particulate nitrate and ammonium, occur at the harvest when the crop is burned, with the amount of nitrogen released equivalent to approximately 35% of annual fertilizer-N application. Nitrogen oxides concentrations show a positive association with fire frequency, indicating that biomass burning is a major emission source, with mean concentrations of NOx doubling in the dry season r

Does biofuel smoke contribute to anaemia and stunting in early childhood?

BACKGROUND: Reliance on biomass fuels for cooking and heating exposes many women and young children in developing countries to high levels of air pollution indoors. Exposure to biomass smoke has been linked to reduced birth weight, acute respiratory infections, and childhood mortality. This study examines the association between household use of biofuels (wood, dung, and crop residues) for cooking and heating and prevalence of anaemia and stunting in children. METHODS: Data are from a 1998-99 national family health survey in India, which measured height, weight, and blood haemoglobin of 29 76

Liquid Biofuels for Transportation: Lessons of the Last Two Decades for the Next Two.

Biofuel mandates and subsidies in several countries led to a 5-fold global growth in ethanol and biodiesel from edible crops in the last two and a half decades. The impacts of this growth for the economy and environment are uncertain and vary with feedstock, production practices, time horizon for impacts, policy parameters, and assumptions inherent to lifecycle assessments and economic modeling. In this context, we offer a perspective on the path forward given that many of the reasons that motivated existing biofuel policies remain relevant. Given advances in batteries and to a lesser extent i

Subnanometric Cu clusters on atomically Fe-doped MoO2 for furfural upgrading to aviation biofuels.

Single cluster catalysts (SCCs) are considered as versatile boosters in heterogeneous catalysis due to their modifiable single cluster sites and supports. In this work, we report subnanometric Cu clusters dispersed on Fe-doped MoO2 support for biomass-derived furfural upgrading. Systematical characterizations suggest uniform Cu clusters (composing four Cu atoms in average) are homogeneously immobilized on the atomically Fe-doped ultrafine MoO2 nanocrystals (Cu4/Fe0.3Mo0.7O2@C). The atomic doping of Fe into MoO2 leads to significantly modified electronic structure and consequently charge redist

Climate impact of biofuels in shipping: global model studies of the aerosol indirect effect.

Aerosol emissions from international shipping are recognized to have a large impact on the Earth's radiation budget, directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation and indirectly by altering cloud properties. New regulations have recently been approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aiming at progressive reductions of the maximum sulfur content allowed in marine fuels from current 4.5% by mass down to 0.5% in 2020, with more restrictive limits already applied in some coastal regions. In this context, we use a global bottom-up algorithm to calculate geographically resolv

Higher Wood Density Lowers Feedstock Cost and Has Minimal Impact on Biomass Conversion to Biofuels.

Poplar and other woody feedstocks have the potential to provide up to 200 million tons of biomass per year that can be converted to liquid fuels. Most forestry strategies that aim to increase biomass productivity per hectare rely on short rotation plantations of fast-growing varieties. The improvement of the wood density as a key trait itself has largely been overlooked. We evaluated natural variation in wood density across a population of genetically diverse Populus trichocarpa trees grown in a common garden. Wood density varies greatly within this population but is heritable; higher wood den

Metabolic Engineering of Lachancea kluyveri with Enhanced Glucose and Xylose Co-utilization for Lignocellulosic Biofuels.

Lignocellulose biorefinery provides a sustainable supply of fuels and value-added compounds. However, the major limitation of its application is the inefficient co-utilization of glucose and xylose by the model yeast. Here, we report for the first time on the metabolic engineering of non-model industrial yeast Lachancea kluyveri for co-utilization of glucose and xylose sustainably using lignocellulosic feedstock. Co-utilization in L. kluyveri was achieved by heterologous expression of XYLl, XYL2, and XYL3 and overexpression of TAL1 and TKL1, which eliminated the imbalanced cofactor specificity

Valorizing Every Carbon Atom: A Cascade Bioprocess for Advanced Biofuels from Corn-Stover-Derived Lignocellulose.

Conventional biorefining of lignocellulosic biomass, such as corn stover (CS), is hampered by poor carbon efficiency, as nearly half of the substrate carbon is lost as CO2 during ethanol fermentation. This study presents a holistically integrated cascade process designed to capture and valorize all major carbon streams. The system synergistically couples three stages: (1) high-productivity ethanol fermentation (1.68 g/L/h) using the engineered yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CE10; (2) anaerobic digestion of the resulting stillage, which efficiently converted residual organics into methane (171

Use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for enhanced lipid production in micro-algae based biofuels.

Microalgae are an alternative source for renewable energy to overcome the energy crises caused by exhaustion of fuel reserves. Algal biofuel technology demands a cost effective strategy for net profitable productivity. Inconsistent illumination intensities hinder microalgal growth. The light-utilizing efficiency of the cells is critical. Light scarcity leads to low production and high intensities cause photo-inhibition. We report effective usage of LEDs of different band wavelengths on the growth of microalgae in a closed, controlled environment to generate biomass and lipid yields. Among the

Plasma Treatment of Cellulose as the First Step in the Synthesis of Second-Generation Biofuel.

Cellulosic ethanol has been an attractive biofuel for over a century. Despite the large scientific interest, the first step of treating cellulose before enzymatic hydrolysis is still inadequate, so the scientific community seeks innovative solutions. Among them, plasma treatment of raw cellulose represents an interesting approach. The literature on approaches to treat cellulose with gaseous plasma is surveyed, and the results reported by different authors are interpreted. Reactive gaseous particles like ions, electrons, metastables, and radicals interact chemically with the surface but do not

pH adjustment increases biofuel production from inhibitory switchgrass hydrolysates.

Biofuels derived from renewable and sustainable lignocellulosic biomass, such as switchgrass, offer a promising means to limit greenhouse gas emissions. However, switchgrass grown under drought conditions contains high levels of chemical compounds that inhibit microbial conversion to biofuels. Fermentation of drought switchgrass hydrolysates by engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zymomonas mobilis results in lower ethanol production than does fermentation of hydrolyzed switchgrass from a typical rainfall year. Here, it is demonstrated that this inhibitory effect can be alleviated by alteri
