Treatment of Traumatic Degloving Injury of the Foot Using a Biologic Dressing in a Pediatric Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Degloving injuries of the foot involve the management of extensive soft tissue and osseous damage secondary to significant forced avulsion of soft tissue, which can present a major challenge for the surgeon. Surgical procedures on pediatric foot degloving involving split-thickness and/or full-thickness skin grafts and rotational flaps can result in negative consequences, such as donor site comorbidities and psychosocial implications when the pediatric patient returns to daily life. CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a 16-year-old girl with no past medical history who su

Effectiveness of human amnion preserved long-term in glycerol as a temporary biological dressing.

Human amnion as a temporary biological wound dressing has remained a beneficial and cost-effective means of treating burns in developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine whether human amnion that has undergone long-term preservation in glycerol is an effective biological dressing compared to fresh amnion and glycerol-preserved human skin. Samples of human amnion and skin were preserved in sterile containers of 85% glycerol at 4 degrees C for over a year. Dorsal full-thickness or split-thickness skin wounds were produced in rats. The defects were divided into four areas, each o

The impact of copper nanoparticles surfactant on the structural and biological properties of chitosan/sodium alginate wound dressings.

Multifunctional wound dressings based on hydrogels are an efficacious and practicable strategy in therapeutic processes and accelerated chronic wound healing. Here, copper (Cu) nanoparticles were added to chitosan/sodium alginate (CS/SA) hydrogels to improve the antibacterial properties of the prepared wound dressings. Due to the super-hydrophobicity of Cu nanoparticles, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a surfactant, and then added to the CS/SA-based hydrogels. The CS/SA/Cu hydrogels were synthesized with 0, 2, 3.5, and 5 wt% Cu nanoparticles. The structural and morphological properties i

Use of Amniotic Membrane as a Biological Dressing for the Treatment of Torpid Venous Ulcers: A Case Report.

Chronic venous disease manifested as ulcers in the lower limb is a highly prevalent pathology in our population. Antiseptics and dressings designed to improve epithelialization are often used to cure the ulcer during outpatient therapy. Despite careful management, sometimes ulcers do not respond to treatment. In this report, we discuss the antiseptic and potentially immunomodulatory effects of the amniotic membrane as a biological dressing for the treatment of venous ulcers refractory to conventional therapy.

Contemporary Methods Allowing for Safe and Convenient Use of Amniotic Membrane as a Biologic Wound Dressing for Burns.

Partial-thickness burns involve damage to the upper layer of skin, which leaves nerve endings exposed, and therefore represent the most painful of several categories of thermal injuries. Historically, partial-thickness burns were treated conservatively by debriding the blisters, by daily tubbing and washing, and the application of new bandages with topical medications. Human amniotic membrane has been used for centuries as a biological wound dressing. In the past 20 years, there has been an increasing body of literature addressing the use of amniotic tissue in chronic wounds and burns. In this

Physical and biological assessments of the innovative bilayered wound dressing made of silk and gelatin for clinical applications.

The physical and biological assessments of the innovative bilayered wound dressing made of silk and gelatin that we have developed previously were performed to evaluate its efficacy for clinical applications. The absorption ability and dehydration rate of the dressing were assessed using the split-thickness skin graft and leg ulcer wound bed models. The bioactivities of the bilayered wound dressing were evaluated. The bilayered dressing showed continuous absorption rate of wound exudate, providing the suitability for the wound with extended inflammation phase. The dehydration rate of the bilay

CICAFAST: comparison of a biological dressing composed of fetal fibroblasts and keratinocytes on a split-thickness skin graft donor site versus a traditional dressing: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Wound repair is one of the most complex biological processes of human life. Allogeneic cell-based engineered skin substitutes provide off-the-shelf temporary wound coverage and act as biologically active dressings, releasing growth factors, cytokines and extracellular matrix components essential for proper wound healing. However, they are susceptible to immune rejection and this is their major weakness. Thanks to their low immunogenicity and high effectiveness in regeneration, fetal skin cells represent an attractive alternative to the commonly used autologous and allogeneic skin g

Application of biological dressings from radiosterilized amnios with cobalt 60 and serologic studies on the handling of burns in pediatric patients.

We present the use of biological dressing (amnios) as an alternative for skin replacement due to burn accidents. With the use of serologic tests, it is guaranteed to be free of the possibility of transmitting infectious diseases. The amnios is sterilized with 60Co gamma radiation. In this way, amnios is free of bacteria and fungi. In addition, with the use of serologic tests at the moment of the childbirth and 6 months later, we can be sure that it won't transmit the syphilis, AIDS, hepatitis b and c viruses. This treatment was applied to 12 children with burns of 1 degree and 2 degrees degree

Graphene Oxide-IPDI-Ag/ZnO@Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Nanocomposite Films for Biological Wound-Dressing Applications.

In this work, we proposed a feasible approach to prepare multifunctional composite films by introducing a nanoscaled filler into a polymer matrix. Specifically, thanks to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) acting as a coupling agent, the hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and the hydroxyl groups on the surface of silver-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ag/ZnO) are covalently grafted, forming GO-IPDI-Ag/ZnO (AGO). The prepared AGO was then introduced into the hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) matrix to form AGO@HPC nanocomposite films by solution blending. AGO@HPC

Umbilical cord inverting technique: a simple method to utilize the umbilical cord as a biologic dressing for sutureless gastroschisis closure.

A sutureless gastroschisis closure provides a cosmetically appealing outcome. The umbilical cord is usually used as a covering material in a sutureless closure because it is a native tissue. However, during the staged closure with a silo placement, special attention is required to keep the umbilical cord moist. The authors report a simple technique to preserve the feasibility of the umbilical cord as a biologic dressing during the silo placement in staged gastroschisis closures.

Synthesis of novel nano composite based on silicone/HEMA/AAm/ZnO as an efficient wound dressing: physicochemical and biological study.

Modern wound dressings are used for burn injuries to prevent complications such as infection and to promote tissue regeneration. In this study, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), acrylamide (AAm), and silicone were simultaneously copolymerized in a dioxane solution via an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) method to produce nanoparticles (NPs). In the next step, to fabricate nanocomposite (NC) films for wound dressing applications, the IPN NPs were blended with silicone and zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs as an antibacterial agent. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the synthesized I

Viable placental allograft as a biological dressing in the clinical management of full-thickness thermal occupational burns: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Occupational burn injuries can be detrimental and difficult to manage. The majority of complex cases are referred and managed at regional burn centers where access to specialized care is available. As an alternative to hospitalization with staged surgical procedures, placental products may be used for outpatient medical management of these common burn injuries, especially if access to a regional burn center is limited or restricted.Fresh amnion has been a treatment of choice in burns for more than 100 years. As a biological covering with a broad scope of potential uses, human placen

Nanofibrous ε-polycaprolactone scaffolds containing Ag-doped magnetite nanoparticles: Physicochemical characterization and biological testing for wound dressing applications in vitro and in vivo.

Skin wounds can lead to numerous complications with dangerous health consequences. In this work, magnetite nanoparticles were doped with different concentrations of antimicrobial silver (Ag) ions and incorporated into the electrospun nanofibrous ε-polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds. Nanoparticles and scaffolds with various Ag contents were characterized using a range of physicochemical techniques. Ag entered magnetite as cations and preferentially positioned at tetrahedral sites, introducing lattice distortions and topographic irregularities.
