Biological and genetic evolution of the nucleoprotein gene of human influenza A viruses.

There is a significant difference in the ability of human influenza A virus H1N1 strains isolated up to 1977 and those isolated later to rescue temperature-sensitive mutants of fowl plague virus with a defect in the nucleoprotein (NP) gene. Therefore the NP genes of five human H1N1 and H3N2 influenza A virus strains, isolated between 1950 and 1978, have been sequenced. By comparison with previous and more recent isolates, an evolutionary pathway has been established. Three amino acid replacements were found which might be responsible for the functional difference between the USSR (1977) and th

Kinetochore reproduction in animal evolution: cell biological explanation of karyotypic fission theory.

Karyotypic fission theory of Todd offers an explanation for the diverse range of diploid numbers of many mammalian taxa. Theoretically, a full complement of acrocentric chromosomes can be introduced into a population by chromosomal fission. Subsequent inheritance of ancestral chromosomes and paired fission derivatives potentially generates a diploid range from the ancestral condition to double its number of chromosomes. Although it is undisputed that both chromosomal fission and fusion ("Robertsonian rearrangements") have significantly contributed to karyological diversity, it is generally ass

Nothing in Evolution Makes Sense Except in the Light of Genomics: Read-Write Genome Evolution as an Active Biological Process.

The 21st century genomics-based analysis of evolutionary variation reveals a number of novel features impossible to predict when Dobzhansky and other evolutionary biologists formulated the neo-Darwinian Modern Synthesis in the middle of the last century. These include three distinct realms of cell evolution; symbiogenetic fusions forming eukaryotic cells with multiple genome compartments; horizontal organelle, virus and DNA transfers; functional organization of proteins as systems of interacting domains subject to rapid evolution by exon shuffling and exonization; distributed genome networks i

Biological Systems as Physical Data Processors: Evolution as a Case of Embodied Computing.

The prevailing view of biological evolution is not unlike bricolage/pastiche/tinkering-in sharp contrast with rational engineering. Yet, different paths often lead to solutions that coincide or converge whether they emerge from naturally-occurring evolution or rationally designed. Such a conjunction-often presented as an anecdote-reveals the ability of biological systems to explore solution spaces and gravitate toward information-rich attractors, which can be found through different routes. This scenario evokes one of embodied computing, a non-conventional type of data processing in which the

From viral evolution to spatial contagion: a biologically modulated Hawkes model.

SUMMARY: Mutations sometimes increase contagiousness for evolving pathogens. During an epidemic, scientists use viral genome data to infer a shared evolutionary history and connect this history to geographic spread. We propose a model that directly relates a pathogen's evolution to its spatial contagion dynamics-effectively combining the two epidemiological paradigms of phylogenetic inference and self-exciting process modeling-and apply this phylogenetic Hawkes process to a Bayesian analysis of 23 421 viral cases from the 2014 to 2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The proposed model is able t

Biological and Clinical Implications of Clonal Heterogeneity and Clonal Evolution in Multiple Myeloma.

Clonal heterogeneity and clonal evolution have emerged as critical concepts in the field of oncology over the past four decades, largely thanks to the implementation of novel technologies such as comparative genomic hybridization, whole genome/exome sequencing and epigenetic analysis. Along with the identification of cancer stem cells in the majority of neoplasia, the recognition of intertumor and intratumor variability has provided a novel perspective to understand the mechanisms behind tumor evolution and its implication in terms of treatment failure and cancer relapse or recurrence. [Evolution of biological management during pregnancy: from uncertainty to evidence in rheumatoid arthritis].

Over the last decade, the management of biologic therapies during pregnancy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients has significantly evolved, shifting from uncertainty to robust evidence. Initially, in 2006, the use of these treatments was discouraged due to insufficient safety data and potential fetal risks. Notable cases, such as the fatal disseminated BCG infection in a newborn exposed to infliximab, highlighted the importance of neonatal monitoring and led to guidelines restricting live-virus vaccinations until 12 months. Later studies demonstrated significant differences in placental trans

DNA Methylation Profiling in IDH-Mutant Gliomas: Biological Evolution, Molecular Grading and Clinical Implementation.

Mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 or 2 (IDH1/2) define a major subgroup of adult-type diffuse gliomas and induce accumulation of D-2-hydroxyglutarate, resulting in extensive DNA and histone methylation changes. This epigenetic reprogramming underlies the glioma CpG island methylator phenotype (G-CIMP) and contributes to tumour lineage, differentiation state and clinical behaviour. DNA methylation profiling has consequently evolved from a research tool into an important ancillary method for CNS tumour classification, molecular subclassification and copy-number analysis. This narrative rev

Evolution and biological characterization of H5N1 influenza viruses bearing the clade 2.3.2.1 hemagglutinin gene.

H5N1 avian influenza viruses bearing the clade 2.3.2.1 hemagglutinin (HA) gene have been widely detected in birds and poultry in several countries. During our routine surveillance, we isolated 28 H5N1 viruses between January 2017 and October 2020. To investigate the genetic relationship of the globally circulating H5N1 viruses and the biological properties of those detected in China, we performed a detailed phylogenic analysis of 274 representative H5N1 strains and analyzed the antigenic properties, receptor-binding preference, and virulence in mice of the H5N1 viruses isolated in China. The p

Modeling the Evolution of Biological Neural Networks Based on Caenorhabditis elegans Connectomes across Development.

Knowledge of the structural properties of biological neural networks can help in understanding how particular responses and actions are generated. Recently, Witvliet et al. published the connectomes of eight isogenic Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodites at different postembryonic ages, from birth to adulthood. We analyzed the basic structural properties of these biological neural networks. From birth to adulthood, the asymmetry between in-degrees and out-degrees over the C. elegans neuronal network increased with age, in addition to an increase in the number of nodes and edges. The degree dis

Biological Characteristics and Patterns of Codon Usage Evolution for the African Genotype Zika Virus.

We investigated temporal trends of codon usage changes for different host species to determine their importance in Zika virus (ZIKV) evolution. Viral spillover resulting from the potential of codon adaptation to host genome was also assessed for the African genotype ZIKV in comparison to the Asian genotype. To improve our understanding on its zoonotic maintenance, we evaluated in vitro the biological properties of the African genotype ZIKV in vertebrate and mosquito cell lines. Analyses were performed in comparison to Yellow fever virus (YFV). Despite significantly lower codon adaptation index

Bone events and evolution of biologic markers in Gaucher disease before and during treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Known biomarkers of Gaucher-disease activity are platelets, chitotriosidase, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and ferritin. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the frequency of bone events (BE) and biomarker changes during two periods: diagnosis to first enzyme-replacement therapy (ERT) and the latter to the closing date. METHODS: BE of 62 treated patients, among the 73-patient cohort followed at Beaujon Hospital, Clichy, France, were described with Kaplan-Meier curves, and linear-mixed models were used to analyze

Smart CO2 capture and release and an insight into biological evolution based on its characteristics.

Since the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased, disrupting Earth’s heat radiation balance and contributing to the rise in global mean temperature. This temperature increase naturally accelerates the evaporation of H2O and intensifies climate change. To mitigate climate change effectively, the accumulated atmospheric CO2 concentration must be reduced immediately. Current CO2 capture technologies primarily rely on amines (synthetic organic compounds), but the global adoption of these technologies remains limited. In this context, we recently developed an innovativ

The biological evolution of the Leeds-Keio ligament in the human knee. A histological and ultrastructural study.

The authors report their experience in the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament using the Leeds-Keio ligament in 12 patients, 7 by open arthrotomy and 5 by an arthroscopic technique. The biological evolution of the new ligament was studied macroscopically and histologically in the first 6 cases treated by open arthrotomy. Arthroscopic monitoring and biopsy was carried out 4 to 10 months after operation. In 5 cases the new ligament appeared to be intact and histologically vital, with proliferation of new tissue along the new ligament. There were broken filaments of dacron hanging fr
