Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract and includes both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Patients with IBD often present with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding but may also have a wide variety of other symptoms such as weight loss, fever, nausea, vomiting, and possibly obstruction. Given that the presentation of IBD is not specific, the differential diagnosis is broad and encompasses a wide spectrum of diseases, many of which can mimic and/or even coexist with IBD. It is important for physicians to differentiate symp

Cu in blood has been believed to transport into cell via albumin and some amino acids. To shed light on the Cu transport process we studied the reaction of the Cu(II)-peptide with the amino acid by absorption and CD spectra. Albumin mimic peptides GlyGly-L-HisGly (GGHG) and penta-Gly(G5) formed stable 4N coordinated Cu(II) complexes, but in the reaction with histidine (His) and penicillamine (Pes) the ternary Cu(II) complex formations were observed different by the kinetic study. Cu(II)-G5 complexes reacted with Pes to form the ternary complex Cu(H(-1)G5)(Pes(-)) which was subsequently transfo

Biliverdin is one of the few endogenous green pigments in animals, yet its use in camouflage and fluorescence is limited by rapid degradation or excretion. Multiple arboreal frogs have overcome this constraint by evolving biliverdin-binding serpins (BBSs)-proteins that stabilize biliverdin. Here, we show that BBSs have convergently evolved high-affinity biliverdin binding comparable to hormone-receptor interactions and tune biliverdin's spectral properties to produce leaf-like green coloration. We further show that BBSs from independent lineages exhibit distinct spectral properties, including

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates a strong link between Zika virus (ZikV) and neurological complications. Acute myelitis, optic neuritis, polyneuropathy, and encephalomyelitis that mimic inflammatory idiopathic demyelination disorders (IIDD) after ZikV infection have been reported in Brazil.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the possible occurrence of molecular mimicry between ZikV antigens and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) autoantigens, the most frequent IIDD of the central nervous system (CNS).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study with 305 patients admitted due to suspected arboviru

Psoriasis vulgaris is a T cell-mediated autoimmune skin disease. First disease onset and disease worsening are often triggered by tonsillar infection with Streptococcus pyogenes. Here we demonstrate the incidental detection of S. pyogenes DNA in samples of different biological origin from patients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis by PCR. These findings may support the model of molecular mimicry in psoriasis pathogenesis.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of acute paralysis in the United States. Campylobacter jejuni is a common trigger for GBS, igniting autoimmunity as a result of molecular mimicry between C. jejuni lipooligosaccharide (LOS) and host gangliosides. Evidence also suggests an active role for cell-mediated and innate immunity in pathogenesis of GBS. Infection alone is not enough for GBS to develop, infection with the same strain might yield different outcomes in different patients. C. jejuni strains with low to absent molecular mimicry to self-antigens can cause full-blown GBS

Camouflaged objects are harder to detect if the background itself is more heterogeneous, and search becomes increasingly inefficient when the scene contains multiple items resembling the target. Some adult leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) with highly specialized habits make holes on host plant leaves while feeding. We propose that leaf beetles camouflage themselves with their feeding holes. The presence of holes makes predators' visual search harder, thus giving beetles more time to escape from the leaf surface either by jumping (Galerucinae: Alticini) or rolling (rest of Chrysomelidae

In Batesian mimicry, mimetic traits are not always as convincing as predicted by theory-in fact, inaccurate mimicry with only a superficial model resemblance is common and taxonomically widespread. The "selection trade-offs hypothesis" proposes a life-history trade-off between accurate mimetic traits and one or more vital biological functions. Here, using an accurate myrmecomorphic (ant-mimicking) jumping spider species, Myrmarachne smaragdina, we investigate how myrmecomorphic modifications to the body shape impact the internal anatomy in a way that could be functionally limiting. Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare, slow-growing mesenchymal neoplasm of the dermis and subcutaneous tissues that has a low-to intermediate-grade malignancy. DFSP commonly involves the trunk and extremities, and very rarely the breast skin, mimicking a primary breast neoplasm with few reported cases in the literature. We report a 35-year old female patient who was referred to the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman in 2017, with a two-year history of a slow growing left breast lump. Assessment of the breasts with mammography revealed a lobulated lesion in the left-upper-inner quadrant w

BACKGROUND: Thousands of flowering plant species attract pollinators without offering rewards, but the evolution of this deceit is poorly understood. Rewardless flowers of the orchid Erycina pusilla have an enlarged median sepal and incised median petal ('lip') to attract oil-collecting bees. These bees also forage on similar looking but rewarding Malpighiaceae flowers that have five unequally sized petals and gland-carrying sepals. The lip of E. pusilla has a 'callus' that, together with winged 'stelidia', mimics these glands. Different hypotheses exist about the evolutionary origin of the me

At oceanic depths >200 m, there is little ambient sunlight, but bioluminescent organisms provide another light source that can reveal animals to visual predators and prey [1-4]. Transparency and mirrored surfaces-common camouflage strategies under the diffuse solar illumination of shallower waters-are conspicuous when illuminated by directed bioluminescent sources due to reflection from the body surface [5, 6]. Pigmentation allows animals to absorb light from bioluminescent sources, rendering them visually undetectable against the dark background of the deep sea [5]. We present evidence sugges

Müllerian mimicry, where groups of chemically defended species display a common warning color pattern and thereby share the cost of educating predators, is one of the most striking examples of ecological adaptation. Classic models of Müllerian mimicry predict that all unpalatable species of a similar size and form within a community should converge on a single mimetic pattern, but instead communities of unpalatable species often display a remarkable diversity of mimetic patterns (e.g. neotropical ithomiine butterflies). It has been suggested that this apparent paradox may be explained if diffe

Molecular mimicry between infectious agents and normal human host cell components is one of the mechanisms responsible for autoimmunity. Among infectious agents, some viruses represent ideal candidates for their ability to infect human cells, where they are harbored for the duration of the life of the host in a latent state. Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) infection has been implicated in the pathogenesis of vascular damage in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and atherosclerosis. Based on recent data describing a cause and effect relationship between hCMV and endothelial cell damage in SSc and atheroscle

Many cryptic green animals match leaves in invisible near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. This observation is an enduring puzzle because animals do not see NIR light, so NIR background matching is unlikely to contribute to visual camouflage. Two alternative explanations have been proposed-infrared camouflage (i.e. matching the temperature of the background) and thermoregulation-but neither hypothesis has been experimentally tested. To test these hypotheses, we developed bilayer coatings that mimicked the reflectivity of green leaf-sitting frogs with high NIR (HNIR) or low NIR (LNIR) reflectance. U

Prey-predator interactions have resulted in the evolution of many anti-predatory traits. One of them is the ability for prey to listen to predators and avoid them. Although prey anti-predatory behavioural responses to predator auditory cues are well described in a wide range of taxa, studies on whether butterflies change their behaviours in response to their predatory calls are lacking. Heliconius butterflies are unpalatable and form Müllerian mimicry rings as morphological defence strategies against their avian predators. Like many other butterflies in the Nymphalidae family, some Heliconius

Iridescence is a striking and taxonomically widespread form of animal coloration [1], but that its intense and varying hues could function as concealment [2] rather than signaling seems completely counterintuitive. Here, we show that the color changeability of biological iridescence, produced by multilayer cuticle reflectors in jewel beetle (Sternocera aequisignata) wing cases, provides effective protection against predation by birds. Importantly, we also show that the most likely mechanism to explain this increase in survival is camouflage and not some other protective function, such as apose

The peptidome mimicry hypothesis (PMH) builds on the principle that vertebrate immunity recognizes peptides absent from the host proteome. It extends this idea to predict host-parasite coevolution outcomes, systematic 'missing peptides', the narrow host specificity of many parasites, and the higher susceptibility of some interspecies hybrids to infection. PMH proposes that long-term coevolution reduces parasite peptide vocabularies and drives convergence toward host repertoires - a pattern that can help to infer a parasite's original host. For example, analyses of SARS-CoV-2 peptide vocabulari

Biological photoprotection refers to the enhancement, preservation, or mimicry of the skin's intrinsic defense systems to prevent or mitigate damage induced by solar and environmental stressors. Unlike conventional sunscreens, which primarily act by reducing photon penetration, biological photoprotection targets the downstream molecular and cellular responses triggered by these exposures. It is achieved by incorporating nonfiltering photoprotective ingredients (PINGs) into sunscreens, which act on key biological pathways involved in skin damage and recovery. Emerging evidence suggests that the
