Demonstration of adapted packed-bed bioreactor for accurate and rapid estimation of biochemical oxygen demand: insights into the influence of microbial community structure and functions.

This study demonstrated a novel approach to accurately estimate 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) in textile wastewater using a microbial consortium from food processing wastewater fixed on coconut fibers. Although glucose-glutamic acid (GGA) has been widely known as the most preferred substrates for microbial respiration, its calibration surprisingly resulted in an overestimation of BOD5 in textile wastewater due to its lower utilization rate compared to that of textile wastewater. After being adapted with a new nutrient environment composed of GGA and textile wastewater, the adapted pac

Portable Photoelectrochromic Visualization Sensor for Detection of Chemical Oxygen Demand.

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important parameter to estimate water quality, and many methods have been developed to measure COD. However, these methods are not satisfying because of the use of hazardous materials, the interference of chloride, and complicated operations. Meanwhile, the development of portable sensors for field testing COD is still at an early stage. In this work, we propose a new portable COD sensor based on the photoelectrochromic principle. The whole detection can be conducted with a small indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode modified with photocatalytic material TiO2/g-C3

Diagnosing activated sludge dysfunction: A full-scale wastewater treatment study.

Activated sludge systems treating municipal wastewater frequently experience performance dysfunction, yet conventional diagnostics rely on isolated parameter monitoring that is difficult to integrate for prioritising interventions. Here, we report an integrated diagnostic framework combining machine learning interpretation, microbial community profiling, and multi-parameter assessment to characterise and prioritise the likely drivers of critical operational failures in a full-scale plant (50,000 m3/day). Treatment of fresh leachate by microaeration pretreatment combined with IC-AO2 process: Performance and mechanistic insight.

Fresh leachate is commonly featured with high concentrations of degradable organic matters, which can impede the performance of traditional biological treatment, especially the anaerobic reactor. Aiming at improving the biological treatment process of fresh leachate, this study creatively proposed a microaerobic-IC-AO2 (MAICAO2) process and compared it with traditional biological process, then optimized the operating conditions. Meanwhile, this work investigated the transformation rules and molecular compositions of dissolved organic matters (DOM) during MAICAO2 process, particularly the hazar

Development of a molasses wastewater treatment system equipped with a biological desulfurization process.

In this study, a laboratory scale experiment for the treatment of synthetic molasses wastewater using a combination of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and a two-stage down-flow hanging sponge (TSDHS) reactor (ABR-TSDHS system) was conducted. The TSDHS comprised a closed-type first-stage down-flow hanging sponge (first DHS) for desulfurization and an open-type second-stage DHS (second DHS) for post-treatment of effluent from the ABR and first DHS. Effluent from the second DHS was sprinkled on top of the first DHS, whereas biogas produced from the ABR was supplied to its bottom. A chemical ox

Electrochemical oxidation as a post treatment for biologically tannery wastewater in batch reactor.

Tannery wastewater is known to contain high concentrations of organic compounds, heavy metals, nitrogen, sulphur, chromium, and many other chemicals. Both aerobic and anaerobic biological approaches have proven ineffective in the treatment of tannery wastewater due to the high salinity and toxic chemicals contained within the medium. Electrochemical oxidation presents a promising method for solving this problem. High pollutant removal efficiency, low energy consumption, and high electrode stability are three important factors supporting the feasibility of an efficient electrochemical treatment

A mechanistic comparison of two constructed wetlands responding to atrazine in agricultural runoff: Divergent removal efficiencies and eco-physiological strategies.

Two constructed wetlands (CWs) included horizontal subsurface flow (HSFCW) and surface flow constructed wetland (SFCW), were established to evaluate performance and underlying mechanisms in removing atrazine and conventional pollutants from non-point source pollution. The introduction of atrazine resulted in a notable decrease in the removal efficiencies for COD, TP and NH4+-N across CWs. Notably, when hydraulic loading rate (HLR) was reduced, a significant recovery was observed in HSFCW, with the removal rates of COD (76.85 ± 12.82%), TP (81.97 ± 2.87%), and NH4+-N (54.14 ± 4.11%) reaching or

Threshold and recovery of anaerobic digestion under high ammonia stress: Influence of COD/NH4+ ratio and CO2 enrichment.

This study underscores the importance of maintaining an optimal chemical oxygen demand to ammonia (COD/NH4+) ratio to ensure stable anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. The optimal COD/NH4+ ratio ranges from 24.0 to 33.0, while a critical threshold is identified between 11.0 and 17.0, below which AD performance declines. However, the AD of protein-rich substrates typically operates under an "inhibited steady-state" condition, characterized by a lower COD/NH4+ level. At lower COD/NH4+ ratios, the acetoclastic methanogenesis is inhibited, while hydrogenotrophic methanogens remain active, as evi

Fe3O4-Enhanced Continuous Production of Medium-chain Fatty Acids from Sludge: Metagenomic Perspective on Microbial Synergy.

Fe3O4 exhibits promising potential in enhancing chain elongation (CE) for medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production from sludge, yet its application in continuous flow processes remains underexplored. In this study, MCFAs were continuously produced from sludge via a Fe3O4-enhanced CE process. Optimal performance was achieved with 20 g/L Fe3O4, 5.8 g COD/L/d ethanol loading rate (ELR), and 3-day hydraulic retention time (HRT), yielding 11.4 ± 0.8 g COD/L MCFAs and a production rate of 3.7 ± 0.1 g COD/L/d. n-Caproate and n-caprylate accounted for 40.9 % and 54.4 % of total MCFAs, respectively.

Applying a dynamic membrane filtration (DMF) process for domestic wastewater preconcentration: Organics recovery and bioenergy production potential analysis.

Wastewater is increasingly recognized as a valuable resource rather than as a waste, motivating a shift in the perspective of wastewater treatment from pollution control to resource recovery. This study proposes the recovery of organic matter from domestic wastewater for the production of bioenergy through a novel process of wastewater preconcentration based on dynamic membrane filtration (DMF). The selection of a dynamic membrane (DM) supporting material, the preconcentration performance of organics, and the biomethane production potential (BMP) of the organic concentrate were investigated. Trace organic contaminant removal in six full-scale integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) systems treating municipal wastewater.

Trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) often pass through conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plants (CAS-WWTPs) and are discharged into surface waters, where they can threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health, largely due to the hormone disrupting effects of certain TrOCs. The integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process is a cost-effective means of upgrading CAS-WWTPs by adding free-floating carrier media, which promotes biofilm formation in the well-mixed suspended growth reactors, providing a potential niche for slow-growing microorganisms. Although IFAS upgrades are

Long-term variations of water quality in the Inner Murchison Bay, Lake Victoria.

The water quality in the Inner Murchison Bay (IMB) located in Uganda on the northern shores of Lake Victoria is affected by a complex mixture of processes and driving factors including pollution, river inflows, lake water levels, wetland management and flora and fauna populations. This study attempts to explain long-term variations of the IMB water quality and to provide a plausible water quality model. Because intermittent monitoring around the Bay hinders accurate determination of pollution, concentrations at the extreme northern shores (hotspots) are considered indicative of the pollutant l

Use of Anaerobic Sludge Microbial Consortia in a Microbial Fuel Cell Biosensor for Biochemical Oxygen Demand Measurement.

Effective management of wastewater treatment plants often requires real-time measurements of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). Conventional methods for determining Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) are often time-consuming, labor-intensive and prone to inaccuracies. Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) have emerged as a viable alternative technology for BOD measurement, offering real-time monitoring capability. However, challenges remain in its validity for testing different types of wastewater. This study developed a cost-effective dual-chamber MFC with graphite felt electrodes and a CMI-7000 membrane, i

Low-dose sodium acetate-mediated energy compensation stabilizes oxygen-limited urea hydrolysis coupled with partial nitritation/anammox for high-strength urea wastewater treatment.

The high free ammonia (FA) environment generated during high-strength urea wastewater hydrolysis can impair biological nitrogen removal, while insufficient energy supply under inorganic influent conditions may limit long-term high-load urea hydrolysis. In this study, a continuous-flow two-stage system coupling an up-flow anaerobic filter reactor (UAFR) with a partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) reactor was developed, and the role of low-dose sodium acetate in stabilizing UAFR urea hydrolysis was investigated. The UAFR showed hydrolysis deterioration under inorganic feeding, whereas hydrolysis p

Impact of various aeration strategies on the removal of micropollutants and biological effects in aerated horizontal flow treatment wetlands.

Two aerated horizontal subsurface flow treatment wetlands were studied over two years for the removal efficacy with respect of conventional wastewater parameters, micropollutants and effect-based methods. One wetland served as control and was aerated 24 h d-1 across 100% of the fractional length of the system. The second aerated horizontal flow treatment wetland was investigated under several aeration modes: first year with a zone of 85% aeration, followed by five months with a zone of 50% aeration and six months with a zone of 35% aeration. With 85% aeration, no significant difference in the

Impact of total dissolved solids on the environment and recent strategies for the complex industrial effluents treatment.

High-TDS wastewater discharged from various industries, including textile, dye & dye intermediate, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, tannery, dairy, food, brewery etc., pose a serious impact on environment. Generally, TDS effluents shows concentration considerably higher than their general regulatory discharge limits. Release of high TDS effluent with other contaminants harms aquatic life and makes it difficult to use such aquatic systems for human and animal consumption. A partial reduction of TDS can be achieved in the range of 15-35% by physicochemical treatments like coagulation-flocculatio

Carbonaceous materials from a petrol primary oily sludge: Synthesis and catalytic performance in the wet air oxidation of a spent caustic effluent.

Oil refineries produce annually large quantities of oily sludge and non-biodegradable wastewater during petroleum refining that require adequate management to minimize its environmental impact. The fraction solid of the oily sludge accounts for 25 wt% and without treatment for their valorization. This work is focused on the valorization of these solid particles through their transformation into porous materials with enhanced properties and with potential application in the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of a non-biodegradable spent caustic refinery wastewater. Hence, dealing with the valor

Optimization of stabilized anaerobic landfill leachate treatment using ozonation with metallic compound using response surface methodology.

Malaysia encounters a consistent rise in the generation of solid waste and leachate on a daily basis. It should also be noted that leachate has a low degree of biodegradability (BOD5 /chemical oxygen demand [COD]), as shown by its BOD5 /COD ratio. Its high toxicity levels significantly threaten the environment, water bodies, and human well-being. High concentrations of COD, color, and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3 -N) in leachate prevent this wastewater from being allowed to be discharged directly into the water body. Therefore, an effective process to remove the pollutant is desired. The aims of t
