Artificial neural interfaces for bionic cardiovascular treatments.

An artificial nerve, in the broad sense, may be conceptualized as a physical and logical interface system that reestablishes the information traffic between the central nervous system and peripheral organs. Studies on artificial nerves targeting the autonomic nervous system are in progress to explore new treatment strategies for several cardiovascular diseases. In this article, we will review our research targeting the autonomic nervous system to treat cardiovascular diseases. First, we identified the rule for decoding native sympathetic nerve activity into a heart rate using transfer function

SMA-actuated bionic eye for humanoid expression.

Inspired by the mechanism of human facial expression, this paper designs and implements a bionic eye system driven by shape memory alloy (SMA) springs. To meet the requirements of multidirectional eye movement, a spherical joint actuation model based on antagonistic SMA spring arrangement is proposed. Four SMA springs are evenly spaced at 90° intervals around the spherical joint. By differentially contracting the opposing springs, precise upward, downward, leftward, and rightward eye rotations are achieved, and real-time force sensor feedback is used to construct a closed-loop PID controller.

Bionic concepts for assessment of defecatory function and dysfunction.

Bionic technology is gaining momentum in medical research. In gastroenterology, bionic technologies such as the PillCam and SmartPill assess intestinal mucosa morphology and function during the gastrointestinal passage of the devices. Oral drug delivery devices and intestinal robots are other bionic technologies under development. Recently, Fecobionics, a simulated feces, was developed for assessment of anorectal (defecatory) function. It is an anally insertable device with shape and consistency like feces. The integrated device measures anorectal pressures, orientation, bending (a proxy of th

An All-Protein Multisensory Highly Bionic Skin.

To achieve a highly realistic robot, closely mimicking human skin in terms of materials and functionality is essential. This paper presents an all-protein silk fibroin bionic skin (SFBS) that emulates both fast-adapting (FA) and slow-adapting (SA) receptors. The mechanically different silk film and hydrogel, which exhibited skin-like properties, such as stretchability (>140%), elasticity, low modulus (<10 kPa), biocompatibility, and degradability, were prepared through mesoscopic reconstruction engineering to mimic the epidermis and dermis. Our SFBS, incorporating SA and FA sensors, demonstrat

NEUROTRANSMISSION IN VISUAL ANALYZER AND BIONIC EYE. A REVIEW.

AIMS: The aim of the work is to point out the transmission of electrical voltage changes in the visual analyser and thus the efficiency of the bionic eye. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The review deals with the question of the transmission of electrical changes in visual path voltage under physiological and pathological conditions. In particular, it points to feedback autoregulatory damage not only of primarily altered cellular structures, but of all other, both horizontally and vertically localized. Based on the results of functional magnetic resonance imaging and electrophysiological methods, it sh

A Bionic Neural Link for peripheral nerve repair.

Peripheral nerve injuries with large gaps and long nerve regrowth paths are difficult to repair using existing surgical techniques, due to nerve degeneration and muscle atrophy. This paper proposes a Bionic Neural Link (BNL) as an alternative way for peripheral nerve repair. The concept of the BNL is described, along with the hypothetical benefits. A prototype monolithic single channel BNL has been developed, which consists of 16 neural recording channels and one stimulation channel, and is implemented in a 0.35-µm CMOS technology. The BNL has been tested in in-vivo animal experiments. Full fu

Outcomes of Patients With Coronary Arterial Bifurcation Narrowings Undergoing Provisional 1-Stent Treatment (from the BIONICS Trial).

Treatment of bifurcation lesions is technically challenging and has been associated with an increased risk of adverse events. We sought to evaluate the clinical and angiographic outcomes of patients who underwent bifurcation lesion provisional treatment in the BioNIR Ridaforolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System in Coronary Stenosis trial. A prospective, multicenter, 1:1 randomized trial was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ridaforolimus-eluting stents (RES) versus zotarolimus-eluting stents (ZES). Enrollment of bifurcation lesions treated with a provisional 1-stent technique was

Multimodal Bionic Magnetic Miniature Amphibious Soft Robots.

Miniature amphibious soft robots (MASRs) show great potential for operation in unstructured and complex environments, owing to their ability to move flexibly through narrow spaces with complex obstacles. However, existing MASRs still lack diverse movement modes and struggle with inefficient performance in both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion, limiting their ability to meet the demands of motion in complex amphibious environments. Here, we propose a joint-based magnetic MASR with four locomotion modes: crawling, rolling, jumping, and swimming, inspired by the structural features of four orga

DEM Study and Field Experiments on Coupling Bionic Subsoilers.

Subsoiling is an effective tillage method for breaking up the plough pan and reducing soil bulk density. However, subsoilers often encounter challenges such as high draft resistance and excessive energy consumption during operation. In this study, the claw toes of the badger and the scales of the pangolin were selected as bionic prototypes, based on which coupling bionic subsoilers were designed. The discrete element method (DEM) was used to simulate and analyze the interactions between soil and both the standard subsoiler and coupling bionic subsoilers. Field experiments were conducted to val

Habilitation beyond the Bionic Metaphor: Producing Deafnesses of the Future.

In this article, we travel back to the early days of experimental use of cochlear implants (CIs) in the 1970s, when unsettled expectations of the device and broad investigations of its effects began to settle and center on speech outcomes. We describe how this attention to speech outcomes coalesced into specific understandings of what CIs do, and how implicit or explicit understandings of CIs as bionic devices that normalize hearing influenced research on and expectations of CIs into the present. We conclude that accumulated evidence about what is known and unknown about experiences and materi

Bidirectional bionic limbs: a perspective bridging technology and physiology.

Precise control of bionic limbs relies on robust decoding of motor commands from nerves or muscles signals and sensory feedback from artificial limbs to the nervous system by interfacing the afferent nerve pathways. Implantable devices for bidirectional communication with bionic limbs have been developed in parallel with research on physiological alterations caused by an amputation. In this perspective article, we question whether increasing our effort on bridging these technologies with a deeper understanding of amputation pathophysiology and human motor control may help to overcome pressing

The current state of bionic limbs from the surgeon's viewpoint.

Amputations have a devastating impact on patients' health with consequent psychological distress, economic loss, difficult reintegration into society, and often low embodiment of standard prosthetic replacement. The main characteristic of bionic limbs is that they establish an interface between the biological residuum and an electronic device, providing not only motor control of prosthesis but also sensitive feedback.Bionic limbs can be classified into three main groups, according to the type of the tissue interfaced: nerve-transferred muscle interfacing (targeted muscular reinnervation), direc

Artificial baroreflex: clinical application of a bionic baroreflex system.

BACKGROUND: We proposed a novel therapeutic strategy against central baroreflex failure: implementation of an artificial baroreflex system to automatically regulate sympathetic vasomotor tone, ie, a bionic baroreflex system (BBS), and we tested its efficacy in a model of sudden hypotension during surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS: The BBS consisted of a computer-controlled negative-feedback circuit that sensed arterial pressure (AP) and automatically computed the frequency (STM) of a pulse train required to stimulate sympathetic nerves via an epidural catheter placed at the level of the lower thor

Capillary Integrated SERS System Inspired by Bee-Hive Bionics: Enabling Dynamic Multi-Component Detection of Trace Biomolecules.

To address bottlenecks in biomolecular trace detection, such as cumbersome sample processing and insufficient dynamic detection capabilities, we propose and construct an Ag-Au Bee-Hive Cavity (BHC) array SERS substrate based on the Bee-Hive bionic synergy concept. This design integrates the stability of solid substrates with the high adaptability of nanoparticles (NPs). The Ag-Au BHC array provides a stable, ordered "hot spots" framework, while Au NPs serve as "enhancement units", establishing a dynamically coupled "NPs-BHC" system. The substrate is capable of detecting Rhodamine 6G (R6G) at c

Bionic Copper-Piceatannol for Polyamine Depletion-Synergized Radioimmunotherapy.

Elevated intracellular glutathione, intratumoral hypoxia, and excessive polyamines severely compromise the efficacy of radiotherapy (RT) by attenuating radiation damage and maintaining an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (ITME). Strategies that concurrently address these obstacles are urgently needed to enhance RT outcomes. Herein, we fabricated a biomimetic nanoplatform (PCuP) via the self-assembly of copper ions and piceatannol into CuP nanometal-polyphenol cores, followed by surface camouflage with platelet membranes (PM). Owing to the platelet membrane coating, PCuP preferentially
