Percutaneous fine needle biopsy guided by computed tomography is now a well established method in most university radiological departments. Positive results are obtained in some 80% of cases. With this tehcnique most abdominal and pelvic structures can be reached without danger for the patient under local anesthesia, even when the fine needle passes through the gastric or bowel walls. In some instances the technique can also be employed for biopsy of pulmonary and mediastinal lesions.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine whether percutaneous core needle biopsy (CNB) of suspicious axillary lymph nodes in patients with breast cancer offers improved diagnostic accuracy compared with fine-needle aspiration (FNA).
METHODS: Records of 400 patients were reviewed to identify patients undergoing ultrasound-guided biopsy followed by surgical axillary evaluation (sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary lymph node dissection). Patients underwent diagnosis and treatment at a single high-volume county hospital. Data collected included demographics, treatment, biopsy, and surgical pathology

INTRODUCTION: Fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNABs) have become increasingly important in the assessment of infectious diseases. We assess the ability of cytopathology to predict the presence of a pathogen and review how often neoplasia occurs concurrently with infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3-year retrospective review of FNABs with concurrent culture results was performed at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Rapid onsite evaluation was performed for all cases by a pathologist. The results of the special and immunohistochemical stains and polymerase chain

With the worldwide acceptance of mechanically assisted, ultrasound guided thin needle biopsy of the prostate gland, prostate fine needle aspiration (FNA) has fallen out of favor with both urologists and cytopathologists. Nonetheless, given today's trend to submit from 12 to 18 core biopsies per patient, prostate FNA remains less expensive, more expedient and more economical than any other sampling method so far developed. This short overview presents prostate FNA as a sensitive, specific and reliable diagnostic modality that should not be dismissed, as an anachronism, from the diagnostic armam

To assess the efficacy of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of axillary lymph nodes (ALN), we retrospectively analyzed 140 FNAB of ALN at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, examining technique and cytologic-histologic correlation. Of the 140 FNAB, 124 were performed by the conventional method and 16 by ultrasound guidance (USG). The diagnoses included: unsatisfactory, 20; negative, 38; positive, 72; suspicious, 6; and indeterminate, 4. Positive diagnoses included: carcinoma, 44.4%; melanoma, 43.0%; lymphoma, 5.6%; sarcoma, 5.6%; and mesothelioma, 1.4%; one of which was false-positive,

We describe the cytologic, histologic, and clinical features of two cases of melanotic schwannoma, arising in the neck and superior mediastinum, respectively. Cytologic findings in both cases included the presence of cells with heavily pigmented cytoplasm, showing long branching projections. The cells were arranged in clusters, with ill-defined boundaries. Histologic findings included interlacing fascicles of cells, with abundant melanin pigment, calcification, and necrosis. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for S. 100 protein and anti-human melanoma (HMB45). Both patients died with met

A 54-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of fever, night sweats, and weight loss. He had hepatosplenomegaly, and bilateral adrenal masses were discovered on computed tomographic (CT) scan. CT-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the right adrenal mass demonstrated purulent material. Special stains done on this material showed organisms with morphologic features of Histoplasma capsulatum. The patient was started on antifungal therapy and discharged. FNAB of the adrenal gland is an effective method in the diagnosis of unusual infectious diseases. Special stains for micro-orga

This report details the fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) cytomorphologic features of two cases of salivary gland mycosis. Both patients had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and presented with parotid gland masses. The first patient had Histoplasmosis with secondary infection by Candida. Cytopathologically, the FNAB smears showed classic features of a deep-seated mycosis characterized by necrosis and scattered fungal forms. The second patient had a colonizing sialadenitis caused by either Asperigillus or Fusarium. Cytopathologically, the findings were similar to those seen in asper

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy, used extensively for evaluating head and neck masses in adults, also provides an excellent minimally invasive means of evaluating infants with neck masses and torticollis. Three cases of torticollis involving infants are presented. In each case, fine-needle aspiration revealed a benign fibrous lesion, ruling out malignancy. The remaining cytologic differential diagnosis between infantile fibromatosis, fibromatosis colli, and calcifying aponeurotic fibrosis is discussed, with mention of the possible causes of and treatment for congenital torticollis. We conclude t

Forty-one intraoperative fine needle aspiration biopsies were performed on 35 patients during exploratory thoracotomy (33 patients) or mediastinoscopy (2 patients). Each biopsy was done with a 22 gauge needle. Smears were prepared at the operating table, air-dried, sent directly to the laboratory, stained, and interpreted immediately by the pathologist. Preparation and reporting time averaged ten minutes. Surgical decisions were made on the basis of the pathologist's reports. Intraoperative fine needle aspiration biopsy was 100% accurate in differentiating inflammatory from neoplastic lesions.

AIMS: We retrospectively investigated the diagnostic accuracy and complication rate of transthoracic core biopsy using an automated biopsy gun and compared the findings with those of aspiration needle biopsy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-three patients underwent 74 core biopsy procedures and 50 patients underwent 52 aspiration biopsy procedures. Of these, a final diagnosis was obtained in 107 lesions with surgery or clinical course. Fifteen patients in which a final diagnosis was not obtained were excluded from the study on diagnostic accuracy. Thus, in the study of diagnostic accuracy, 63 c

Syphilis is coming back in the recent a few decades especially in the gay and HIV populations. Since syphilis can be "the great mimic" clinically and pathologically, a case report with updated review can be helpful to the medical community. We report, a case of syphilitic lymphadenitis diagnosed via fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The pitfalls associated with the diagnosis of syphilitic lymphadenitis will be discussed. The patient's medical records were reviewed. The pertinent history, clinical course, and ancillary studies including FNAB cytology with special stains are presented. In ad

The cytologic findings from intraocular biopsy of coronal adenomas of three previously surgically enucleated eyes were studied. Cohesive clusters of nonpigmented epithelial cells were observed. Clusters of epithelial cells were surrounded by characteristic intercellular matrix material. Coronal adenomas have been clinically mistaken for intraocular melanomas. It is important for pathologists to be familiar with the aspiration cytology of the coronal adenoma to avoid unnecessary enucleation or iridocyclectomy.

Percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy of the mediastinum has become a safe and reliable diagnostic technique that can decrease the need for mediastinoscopy in a large number of cases. It is particularly useful in detecting metastatic carcinoma, but it can also be helpful in the diagnosis of a number of other mediastinal lesions including thymoma, lymphoma, and cysts. Experience with the procedure and good cytopathological interpretation are important to the success of the procedure.

Real-time ultrasonography (US) was used to guide fine-needle aspiration biopsy of 111 breast masses and three axillary lymph nodes. The masses included 51 (45%) nonpalpable lesions. Two different guidance techniques were used, with satisfactory results. Lesions less than 1 cm in diameter could be accurately aspirated, and the method allowed quick and accurate cytologic characterization of solid breast masses. The sensitivity of the cytologic diagnosis of malignancy was 92%, and the specificity was 93%. US-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of breast masses should be routinely performed, sinc
