Odor emissions and microbial activity associated with biosolids dewatered using seven different polyacrylamide cationic polymers were investigated. Nitrogen, sulfur, ketone, and odor unit emissions, and biosolids microbial community metabolic profiles were measured for biosolids containing each polymer. Ammonia represented more than 98% of total nitrogen flux for all polymers, with small concentrations of trimethyl amine. Dimethyl disulfide and carbon disulfide fluxes summed represented 87 to 97% of the sulfur flux for all polymers, with lesser quantities of dimethyl sulfide. Maximum dimethyl

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are widely recognized as hotspots for the accumulation of antimicrobial resistance determinants (AMR). This study analyses the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and antibiotic residues in influent and effluent wastewater, as well as in dehydrated and composted sludge from a municipal WWTP including a composting facility in southern Spain. Influent wastewater exhibited different ARG profiles, including macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLSB), aminoglycoside, tetracycline, quinolone, and multidrug resistance rel

Although modern technologies have significantly reduced mass emissions of particulate matter, there remains growing concern about the number emissions of particles smaller than 10 nm in diameter. Despite their minimal contribution to total aerosol mass, these particles have high surface-to-volume ratios, making them highly reactive and capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory tract. Here we show that biosolid processing facilities can emit nanoparticles. Repeated and persistent episodes of elevated particle number concentrations (PNs) were observed downwind from a facility, frequently

Trichloroethene (TCE) is a widespread toxic groundwater contaminant; thus, the development of inexpensive and accessible remediation materials is needed. Bioremediation of TCE under field conditions often requires the addition of carbon amendments. This study examines the use of biosolids at a field site as a sustainable carbon-rich and microbial amendment. A trench with amendments was installed upstream of a TCE-contaminated site, which was filled with biosolids, limestone, and biochar. Field monitoring of water quality parameters was compared with microbial community changes in soil samples

Treatment of municipal wastewater, which involves multiple steps, produces large amounts of biosolid sludge, which is either incinerated or disposed in landfills. This sludge contains carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous in appreciable amounts, and hence, it is being recently suggested that it should be used as a fertilizer. However, the biosolid sludge also contains large amounts of heavy metals, which exert harmful effects on the plantation and therefore, they must be removed before it can be used as a fertilizer. In addition, some of these heavy metals are precious such as gold. In this work,

Many groundwater aquifers around the world are contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE), which can be harmful to human and ecosystem health. Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) are commonly used to remediate TCE-contaminated groundwaters especially when a point source is ill defined. Using biosolids from wastewater treatment plants as a PRB filling material can provide a source of carbon and nutrients for dechlorinating bacterial activity. However, under the anaerobic conditions of the PRB, methanogenesis can also occur which can adversely affect reductive dechlorination. We conducted bench scale

Hydrogen sulfide emissions from wastewater affect human health and equipment durability, thus presenting a complex issue for utilities. Several VOC emission models have been used before to predict H2S in collection systems and water resources recovery operations, even if with restrictions. By contrast, fewer studies focus on biosolids emissions and modelling. This paper presents a dynamic modelling approach to predict H2S concentration in a tank headspace of a wastewater biosolids recovery facility. Data from one of the largest Portuguese water resources recovery facilities was collected under

The authors studied the health status of residents living in Wood County, OH, near farm fields that were permitted to receive biosolids. They mailed a health survey to 607 households and received completed surveys from 437 people exposed to biosolids (living on or within 1 mile of the fields where application was permitted) and from 176 people not exposed to biosolids (living more than 1 mile from the fields where application was permitted). The authors allowed for up to 6 surveys per household. Results revealed that some reported health-related symptoms were statistically significantly elevat

ABSTRACT: The impact of the menstrual cycle on physical fitness in athletes remains controversial in the scientific literature. Notable fluctuations in sex hormones occur at three key phases of the menstrual cycle, during which estrogen and progesterone levels vary significantly. In addition, the presence of regular bleeding does not ensure ovulation; therefore many women may not be aware that they have anovulatory cycles. These sex hormones can influence the physiology of women and can affect their level of cardiorespiratory performance depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle they are i

The solubility of P in biosolids and manures has been shown to influence the potential for dissolved P losses in runoff and leachate when these materials are land applied. As a result, some Mid-Atlantic US states have developed P source coefficients (PSCs) to account for differences in P solubility between fertilizers, manures, and biosolids in P risk assessment tools. The reliability of these PSCs has not been evaluated under anoxic conditions, where environmental changes may affect the P solubility of biosolids or manures. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of anoxic condi

BACKGROUND: Fertilisation of land with processed sewage sludges, which often contain low levels of pathogens, endotoxins, and trace amounts of industrial and household chemicals, has become common practice in Western Europe, the US, and Canada. Local governments, however, are increasingly restricting or banning the practice in response to residents reporting adverse health effects. These self-reported illnesses have not been studied and methods for assessing exposures of residential communities to contaminants from processed sewage sludges need to be developed.

Biosolids, the major by-products of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), are widely applied to agricultural land as cost-effective fertilisers and soil amendments. However, they have emerged as a source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) released into the environment. This study investigated PFAS leachability from 22 biosolids collected from various Australian WWTPs before and after addition of two sorbents, granular activated carbon (GAC) and biochar, applied at 1% (w/w). A total of 22 PFAS compounds with different CF₂ chain lengths and functional head groups were detected in the b

Biosolids can provide a nutrient rich soil amendment, particularly for poor soils and semi-arid or drought-prone areas. However, there are concerns that sludge and biosolids could be a source of propagation and exposure to AMR determinants such as antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). To inform risk assessment efforts, a systematic literature review was performed to build a comprehensive spreadsheet database of ARB and ARG concentrations in biosolids (and some sludges specified as intended for land application), along with 69 other quantitative and qualit

Antifungals are used widely in clinical and agricultural practice to control fungal growth, either treating or preventing infection. There are reports of increasing prevalence of resistance to antifungals in human pathogens and concern that their use in agriculture is driving clinical resistance in patients. While crop protection products are the most obvious source in agriculture, a further source may be biosolids from wastewater treatment. In the UK, these are applied to land to provide nutrients and improve soil structure for crops. In this study, biosolids from ten sites in England and one

Little is known about the dissipation rate of microcontaminants in biosolids during storage and stabilization in stockpiles (unsaturated) or storage lagoons/tanks (saturated). The objective of this study was to characterize the dissipation in biosolids of two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP), in microcosms under saturated and unsaturated conditions that simulate biosolids that are stockpiled on land or deposited in lagoons/tanks, respectively. The laboratory experiment was conducted at 22 °C using biosolids spiked at an initial nominal concentration of 10 mg kg-1 for

This study, one of the few conducted to date on working farms in the US, examined per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in 10 farms treated with biosolids using a paired control-treatment approach. Biosolids are nutrient-rich and inexpensive soil amendments, however, if the biosolids contain PFAS which are known to be toxic, mobile and to bioaccumulate, they can leave lasting negative impacts on farming soil and water. Our study showed significantly higher concentrations of PFAS in biosolids-treated (treatment) soils compared to (untreated) controls. Soil depth, soil physico

The interaction of inorganic contaminants present in biosolids with iron, aluminum, and manganese oxy/hydroxides has been advocated as a key mechanism limiting their bioavailability. In this study, we investigated whether this is indeed the case, and further, whether it can be exploited to produce optimized biosolids products through the addition of chemical additives during sewage sludge processing. Experiments were conducted to investigate whether the addition of iron- and aluminum-based amendments (at 5 different rates) during the anaerobic digestion phase of wastewater treatment can effect

Mercury contaminated stockpiles of biosolids (3.5-8.4 mg kg(-1) Hg) from Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant (MW-WTP) were investigated to evaluate the possibility for their phytoremediation. Nine plant species (Atriplex codonocarpa, Atriplex semibaccata, Austrodanthonia caespitosa, Brassica juncea, Brassica napus, Gypsophila paniculata, Sorghum bicolor, Themeda triandra and Trifolium subterraneum) were screened for phytoextraction potential in Hg-contaminated biosolids from MW-WTP. In addition, the same plant species were germinated and grown in two other substrates (i.e. potting mix an

The influence of a composted biosolid from urban wastewater treatment on the retention and solubility of Cu, Pb or Zn added to a soil was studied by batch adsorption/desorption experiments, equilibrating both materials and their mixtures with solutions containing various metal concentrations. The composted biosolid adsorbed less Cu or Pb and slightly more Zn than the soil, and thus caused a noticeable decrease in the retention of Cu or Pb and an increase in Zn adsorption by soil-biosolid mixtures, but these effects in the mixtures were not additive for any metal. The pH effects were studied by
