Cassava wastewater valorization for the production of biosurfactants: surfactin, rhamnolipids, and mannosileritritol lipids.

The global production of cassava was estimated at ca. 303 million tons. Due to this high production, the cassava processing industry (cassava flour and starch) generates approximately ca. 0.65 kg of solid residue and ca. 25.3 l of wastewater per kg of fresh processed cassava root. The composition of the liquid effluent varies according to its origin; for example, the effluent from cassava flour production, when compared to the wastewater from the starch processing, presents a higher organic load (ca. 12 times) and total cyanide (ca. 29 times). It is worthy to highlight the toxicity of cassava

Characterization of the genus Pseudozyma by the formation of glycolipid biosurfactants, mannosylerythritol lipids.

Pseudozyma antarctica is one of the best producers of the glycolipid biosurfactants known as mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs), which show not only excellent surface-active properties but also versatile biochemical actions. In order to obtain a variety of producers, all the species of the genus were examined for their production of MELs from soybean oil. Pseudozyma fusiformata, P. parantarctica and P. tsukubaensis were newly identified to be MEL producers. Of the strains tested, P. parantarctica gave the best yield of MELs (30 g L(-1)). The obtained yield corresponded to those of P. antarctica,

Functional Implications of Marine Biosurfactants and Their Therapeutic Potential Against Alzheimer's Disease.

Neuronal damage and cerebral impairment are defining characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with amyloid-β aggregation, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Current treatments mainly provide symptomatic relief and do not effectively prevent disease progression, highlighting the need for novel disease-modifying strategies. Marine microorganisms produce amphiphilic substances called biosurfactants that exhibit diverse biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective activities. Due to their amphiphi

Biosurfactants: Secondary Metabolites Involved in the Process of Bioremediation and Biofilm Removal.

The search for environmentally friendly methods to remove persistent substances such as organic pollutants and sessile communities such as biofilms that severely affect the environment and human health resulted in biosurfactant discovery. Owing to their low level of toxicity and high biodegradability, biosurfactants are increasingly preferred to be used for removal of pollutants from nature. These amphipathic molecules can be synthesized inexpensively, employing cheap substrates such as agricultural and industrial wastes. Recent progress has been made in identifying various biosurfactants that

Remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated groundwater with the use of surfactants and biosurfactants.

Remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater is challenging due to the large volume of contaminated water, restricted aquifer access, and the recalcitrance of hydrocarbons. This study evaluates chemically-based surfactants (A and B, comprised of alcohols, esters and distillates from petroleum) and biosurfactants (C and BS, containing enzymes and microbial-derived surfactants) to enhance petroleum-hydrocarbon remediation. Surfactants/biosurfactants were evaluated under environmental conditions mimicking Arabic Region groundwater. The influence of factors like surfactant to crude oil rati

Biosurfactant-functionalized porphyrin chromophore that forms J-aggregates.

Structurally complex biosynthesized building blocks whose structures can be systematically varied are of great interest for the synthesis of manipulable self-organizing supramolecular systems. Sophorolipids (SLs) are an important class of glycolipid biosurfactants that consists of a sophorose (glucose disaccharide) polar head group that allows structural diversification by full or selective acetylation at the 6'- and 6''-positions. Porphyrins are a group of naturally-occurring heterocyclic macromolecular organic compounds that have efficient charge transfer properties. Herein we describe the s

A Biosurfactant-Inspired Heptapeptide with Improved Specificity to Kill MRSA.

The emergence and rapid spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a serious threat to public health. New antibiotics and strategies are urgently needed to combat S. aureus associated infections. Bacaucin, a novel cyclic lipopeptide from Bacillus subtilis CAU21, is reported. Bacaucin shows broad antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, but is also hemolytic and cytotoxic. However, bacaucin-1, a bacaucin-inspired ring-opened heptapeptide, shows specific antibacterial activity against MRSA by a membrane-disruptive mechanism without detectable toxicity to mam

Compositional and Functional Characterization of Glycolipid Biosurfactants from an Olive-Derived Lactiplantibacillus plantarum.

Biosurfactants from lactic acid bacteria are attractive as safe, multifunctional ingredients for food and cosmetic applications, yet many remain only partially characterized. An olive-derived strain was identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum J2K-1229 by 16S rRNA gene and genome-based phylogeny. Grown in rapeseed oil-containing medium, it secreted extracellular material with surface/interfacial activity, and its cell-free supernatant emulsified diverse plant oils (emulsification index after 24 h, 26.67-41.33%). A purified biosurfactant fraction gave carbohydrate- and lipid-positive, ninhyd

Isolation and screening of antimicrobial biosurfactants obtained from mangrove plant root-associated bacteria.

The unique properties of biosurfactants obtained from microbes, including their activity at extreme temperatures, make them more attractive than synthetic alternatives. Henceforth, the principle objective is to isolate and detect the antibacterial and antifungal activities of the biosurfactants produced from bacteria of the economically competitive mangrove ecosystem. Using the serial dilution method, 53 bacterial strains were recovered from the Manakudy mangrove forest in Kanyakumari, India, for the investigation. Different biosurfactant screening methods and morphological and biochemical tes

Highlighting the Potency of Biosurfactants Produced by Pseudomonas Strains as Anti-Legionella Agents.

Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, is a waterborne bacterium mainly found in man-made water systems in close association with free-living amoebae and multispecies biofilms. Pseudomonas strains, originating from various environments including freshwater systems or isolated from hospitalized patients, were tested for their antagonistic activity towards L. pneumophila. A high amount of tested strains was thus found to be active. This antibacterial activity was correlated to the presence of tensioactive agents in culture supernatants. As Pseudomonas strains were

Production and characterization of microbial biosurfactants for potential use in oil-spill remediation.

Two biosurfactants, surfactin and fatty acyl-glutamate, were produced from genetically-modified strains of Bacillus subtilis on 2% glucose and mineral salts media in shake-flasks and bioreactors. Biosurfactant synthesis ceased when the main carbohydrate source was completely depleted. Surfactin titers were ∼30-fold higher than fatty acyl-glutamate in the same medium. When bacteria were grown in large aerated bioreactors, biosurfactants mostly partitioned to the foam fraction, which was recovered. Dispersion effectiveness of surfactin and fatty acyl-glutamate was evaluated by measuring the crit

Streptococcus thermophilus and its biosurfactants inhibit adhesion by Candida spp. on silicone rubber.

The adhesion of yeasts, two Candida albicans and two Candida tropicalis strains isolated from naturally colonized voice prostheses, to silicone rubber with and without a salivary conditioning film in the absence and presence of adhering Streptococcus thermophilus B, a biosurfactant-releasing dairy isolate, was studied. Coverage of 1 to 4% of the surface of silicone rubber substrata with adhering S. thermophilus B gave significant reductions in the initial yeast adhesion regardless of the presence of a conditioning film. Mechanistically, this interference in yeast adhesion by S. thermophilus B
