Sexual and Religious Obsessions in Relation to Suicidal Ideation in Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Obsessions and suicidal behavior are common among patients with bipolar disorder. The relation between them and their impact on disease severity should be a focus of attention. This study aimed at assessment of the presence of sexual and religious obsessions in patients with bipolar disorder and their relation to suicide ideation. METHODS: Ninety patients diagnosed with bipolar I disorder were recruited consecutively and subdivided into two groups: bipolar disorder with and without sexual/religious obsessions. Both groups were subjected to Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsi

Temporal relation between sleep and mood in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Early recognition of the prodromal symptoms of bipolar disorder, combined with a patient action plan, may help to prevent relapses. Sleep disturbances are frequent warning signs of both mania and depression. This study used cross correlation analysis to characterize the relationship between mood, sleep and bedrest in longitudinal data. METHODS: Self-reported mood, sleep and bedrest (mean 169 +/- 59 days of data per patient) from 59 outpatients with bipolar disorder receiving standard treatment were analyzed. The cross correlation function was used to determine the latency between

Patient-based utilities for bipolar disorder-related health states.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder which impacts patient functioning and well-being. With increasing interest in cost-effectiveness of treatments, it is necessary to provide estimates of patient's perspectives on treatment outcomes. This study estimated health state utilities for hypothetical bipolar-related health states and patient's current health from bipolar I patients. METHODS: Clinicians completed Young Mania Rating Scale, Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, and Global Assessment Score. Patients completed structured standard gamble (SG) utility assessment int

[Comorbid anxiety disorders and alcohol-related disorders in a population of bipolar I disorder: investigation in a Flemish population].

BACKGROUND: Bipolar I disorder (bp i) is a very debilitating psychiatric disorder which is frequently associated with comorbid psychiatric and somatic disorders. Many studies in other countries show strongly elevated prevalences of anxiety disorders and alcohol-related disorders in the bp i population, but so far no data on this topic are available with regard to the Flemish population. AIM: To determine the prevalence of anxiety disorders and alcohol-related disorders in a Flemish population of bp i outpatients in remission and to find out whether comorbidity of these disorders is linked to

Can polygenic risk scores help identify pediatric bipolar spectrum and related disorders?: A systematic review.

The genetic basis of mood disorders can, theoretically, provide diagnostic information in scenarios of clinical uncertainty. Therefore, we examined the available body of knowledge on the association between polygenic risk scores for bipolar disorder (BP-PRSs) and pediatric bipolar spectrum and related disorders. We performed a literature search through PubMed in March of 2020. The following variables were extracted from relevant studies: population age, study sample size, source of polygenic risk scores, source of data, the primary goal of the study, the assessments used during the course of t

DSM-5 reviewed from different angles: goal attainment, rationality, use of evidence, consequences—part 2: bipolar disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, personality disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, neurocognitive disorders.

Part 1 of this paper discussed several more general aspects of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and offered a detailed, paradigmatic analysis of changes made to the chapter on depressive disorders. This second part focusses on several other disorders, including bipolar and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The respective changes and their possible consequences are discussed under consideration of traditional psychiatric classification, particularly from the perspective of European traditions and on the basis of a PubMed search and review papers. The general conclus

Circadian and Sleep-Related Polygenic Scores in Relation to Lithium Treatment Response in Bipolar Disorder.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Circadian rhythms are reflected through sleep-wake patterns and chronotype. Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) frequently exhibit disrupted sleep patterns and a tendency for evening chronotype. Also, genetic risk factors for BD partially overlap with those influencing sleep traits. Lithium (Li), the first-line therapy for BD, stabilizes circadian rhythms and promotes morningness in responders (Rp). This study aimed to evaluate whether the polygenic burden of sleep-related traits is associated with Li response in BD patients. METHODS: A total of 114 European ances

Apparent comorbidity of bipolar disorder in a population with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Combat is often associated with the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. Battle may also lead to other emotional extremes. Sometimes this is enough to meet criteria for a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BPD), but it is open to debate if this is clinically appropriate. This study examined the rate of BPD, as assessed by structured interview, in combat veterans who clinicians believed met the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder but not BPD. Structured interviews were conducted with 109 such participants. Close to 81% endorsed a history of a major depressive episode, 34.9% endorsed

Patient-control association study of substance P-related genes in unipolar and bipolar affective disorders.

In the search of genes potentially implicated in the aetiology of affective disorders (AD), SUBSTANCE P (SP) pathway is receiving increased interest. SP receptor antagonists, such as MK-869 and L-759274, have been shown to have antidepressant effect. Results from preclinical and human studies implicate SP and its pathway in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. We investigated a possible association between 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) among four SP-related genes and unipolar and bipolar ad (UPAD and BPAD) in a first sample of 92 UPAD patients and 92 control individuals and in a

Psychiatric comorbidity in individuals with bipolar disorder: relation with clinical outcomes and functioning.

The aim was to assess the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity (PC) in Brazilian euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder type I, and investigate its effects on clinical outcomes and functioning. A group of 179 outpatients with BD-I in the recuperation phase were assessed, of whom 75 (41.9%) had PC and 104 (58.1%) had not. Both groups were compared using sociodemographic/clinical questionnaire, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV axis I and II, Sheehan Disability and Barratt Impulsiveness Scales. Patients with PC presented less religious affiliation, more history of lifetime p

Sleep in Adolescents With Bipolar I Disorder: Stability and Relation to Symptom Change.

Sleep disturbances are common features of bipolar disorder (BD), yet little is known about trajectories of sleep disturbances in youth with BD. Using longitudinal data, this study assessed the stability of sleep disturbances and their ability to predict symptom progression in adolescents diagnosed with BD compared to controls. Thirteen- to 19-year-olds meeting diagnostic criteria for BD I (n = 19, 16.2 ± 1.75 years, 57.9 % female, 68.4% Caucasian) and psychiatrically healthy age-comparable controls (n = 21, 15.7 ± 1.48 years. 52.4% female, 57.1% Caucasian) were assessed for sleep onset latency

Age at Onset of Bipolar Disorder Related to Parental and Grandparental Illness Burden.

OBJECTIVE: The age at onset of bipolar disorder varies greatly in different countries and continents. The association between load of family history of psychiatric illness and age at onset has not been adequately explored. METHODS: 979 outpatients with bipolar disorder (from 4 sites in the United States and 3 in the Netherlands and Germany) gave informed consent and completed a questionnaire about their demographics, age at onset of illness, and family history of unipolar and bipolar disorder, alcohol and substance abuse comorbidity, suicide attempts, and "other" illnesses in their parents, 4

Assessment of risk factors related to suicide attempts in patients with bipolar disorder.

We compared the characteristics of patients with bipolar disorder with and without a history of suicide attempts to identify the risk factors of suicide in this disorder. Among 212 patients with bipolar disorder, 44 (21.2%) patients had histories of suicide attempts. Suicide attempters were younger and more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar II. The variables that differentiated those who did from those who did not attempt suicide included age at first contact, lifetime history of antidepressant use, major depressive episode, mixed episode, auditory hallucinations, rapid cycling, the number o

Trait-related decision-making impairment in the three phases of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: In bipolar disorder (BD), little is known about how deficits in neurocognitive functions such as decision-making are related to phase of illness. We predicted that manic, depressed, and euthymic bipolar patients (BPs) would display impaired decision-making, and we tested whether clinical characteristics could predict patients' decision-making performance. METHODS: Subjects (N = 317; age range: 18-65 years) including 167 BPs (45 manic and 32 depressed inpatients, and 90 euthymic outpatients) and 150 age-, IQ-, and gender-matched healthy control (HC) participants, were included with

Psychosis and relapse in bipolar disorder are related to GRM3, DAOA, and GRIN2B genotype.

OBJECTIVE: Dysfunction in glutamate signalling is thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). There is evidence of associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GRM3, GRIN2B, and DAOA genes and the diagnosis of BD. In this pilot study, we investigated the frequency of SNP variants in these 3 genes within South African population groups, and assessed interactions between genes and phenotypes of BD disease severity. METHOD: Multiplex SNaPshotTM PCR was used to genotype 191 case and 188 control samples. Cases comprised of 191 individuals in a South Af

Is aspirin useful in patients on lithium? A pharmacoepidemiological study related to bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Administration to rats of mood stabilizers approved for bipolar disorder (BD) downregulates markers of the brain arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) metabolic cascade, including phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) and cyclooxygenase (COX) expression. We hypothesized that other agents that target the brain AA cascade, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids, also would ameliorate BD symptoms. METHODS: Medication histories on subjects who had been prescribed lithium were collected from the Netherlands PHARMO Record Linkage System. Data were stratified according to drug

Health-related quality of life and functioning in bipolar disorder: the impact of pharmacotherapy.

Bipolar disorder has a major deleterious impact on many aspects of a patient's functioning and health-related quality of life. Although the formal measurement of these deficits has been neglected until recently, many well-designed trials now include an assessment of functioning and health-related quality of life using one or more rating scales. This review describes recent developments in the measurement of functioning and health-related quality of life in bipolar disorder, and discusses the evidence that medications that improve symptoms in bipolar disorder also offer clinically relevant bene
