Antagonistic responses of native Trichoderma spp. vary among Bipolaris sorokiniana isolates.

Spot blotch caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana is a major threat to barley production worldwide. Although the genus Trichoderma is widely recognized for its biocontrol potential, the extent to which genetic diversity among distinct pathogen isolates influences antagonistic responses remains poorly understood. This study screened eight native Trichoderma isolates from threatened Araucaria Forest remnants against six B. sorokiniana field isolates using exclusively in vitro assays. Pathogen genetic diversity was assessed using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers, while biocontrol potential w

A Zinc Polyphenolic Compound Increases Maize Resistance Against Infection by Bipolaris maydis.

Maize leaf blight (MLB), caused by the fungus Bipolaris maydis, is an important disease affecting maize production. In order to minimize the use of fungicides in agriculture, nutrient-based resistance inducers may become a promising alternative to manage MLB. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential of Semia® (zinc (20%) complexed with a plant-derived pool of polyphenols (10%)) to hamper the infection of maize leaves by B. maydis by analyzing their photosynthetic performance and carbohydrate and antioxidative metabolism, as well as the expression of defense-related genes. Plants

1H NMR-guided isolation of ophiobolins from Bipolaris maydis and their bioactivities.

Ophiobolins present characteristic 1H NMR resonances, which distinctly differ from other metabolites reported from Bipolaris maydis, and were used for an NMR-guided isolation in this research. As a result, 17 undescribed ophiobolin-sesterterpenoids, ophiobolinoids A-Q (1-17), were isolated from Bipolaris maydis. Ophiobolinoids A-C possessed a rare oxygen bridge connecting C-3 and C-21. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, DP4+ calculations, ECD calculations, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Specifically, ophibolinoid C showed a weak inhibitory effect on NO p

Fatal fungal endarteritis caused by Bipolaris spicifera following replacement of the aortic valve.

A 73-year-old man presented to our hospital 5 months after a porcine replacement of an aortic valve with persistent fevers, meningoencephalopathy, and progressive renal failure; evidence of systemic emboli was found subsequently. The results of an exhaustive evaluation were negative except for two of 23 blood cultures that were performed; each of these two cultures yielded one colony of Drechslera species (now known as Bipolaris) on one plate. Autopsy revealed a fungal vegetation (9.5 x 3.2 x 3.0 cm) in the ascending aorta that arose from suture material 1.0 cm distal to the aortic valve. Myco

Physiological characterization of Cochliobolus bicolor (sin. Bipolaris bicolor) from wheat BRS 264 seeds.

Several diseases cause a reduction on the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield, among which is helminthosporiosis, which infects the plant in all its stages of development. The objective of this work was to carry out the physiological characterization, under different temperature regimes of Cochliobolus bicolor isolates from BRS 264 wheat seeds. The six isolates of C. bicolor were recovered from the mycoteca stored in the Plant Pathology Laboratory of the Goiás State University. For the physiological evaluation, C. bicolor isolates were inoculated in Petri dishes containing PDA medium and subjec

A Novel Member of miR169 Family Negatively Regulates Maize Resistance Against Bipolaris maydis.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been confirmed to play important roles in plant defense response. However, the key maize miRNAs involved in the defense response against Bipolaris maydis are very limited. In this study, a novel member of the miR169 family in response to B. maydis, named zma-miR169s, was discovered and investigated. The expression levels of pre-miR169s and zma-miR169s were significantly repressed during B. maydis infection. The CRISPR/Cas9-induced zma-miR169s mutant exhibited more resistance against B. maydis, whereas overexpression of zma-miR169s enhanced susceptibility, supporting tha

An isolate of human blood-associated partitivirus naturally infects the phytopathogenic fungus Bipolaris maydis.

Human blood-associated partitivirus (HuBPV) was first identified through metagenomic analysis of serum samples from two Peruvians, but its natural host remains unknown. Here, we report the detection of an HuBPV strain (HuBPV-Bm) in the phytopathogenic fungus Bipolaris maydis strain HN11 in Hubei Province, China. The dsRNA1 and dsRNA2 of HuBPV-Bm show more than 97.6% and 98.8% nucleotide sequence identity, respectively, to those from the metagenomically discovered HuBPV strain (HuBPV-M). Notably, HuBPV-Bm contains a third dsRNA segment that was not reported for HuBPV-M. All mycelia derived from

Bipolaris hawaiiensis-caused phaeohyphomycotic orbitopathy. A devastating fungal sinusitis in an apparently immunocompetent host.

The authors present a case report of a devastating bilateral optic neuropathy and orbitopathy initiated by a contiguous fungal sinusitis, in an apparently immunocompetent young man. The causative organism, Bipolaris hawaiiensis, and other species classified in the genus Bipolaris, are being recognized with increased frequency as causes of several ophthalmic and systemic disorders in both immunocompromised and normal hosts. A literature review demonstrates the variety of clinical presentations with emphasis on those cases which may present to the ophthalmologist.

Phaeohyphomycosis caused by the fungal genera Bipolaris and Exserohilum. A report of 9 cases and review of the literature.

We have reported 7 new cases of Bipolaris infection and 2 of Exserohilum infection, which demonstrate the capability of these 2 genera to cause invasive as well as "allergic" disease. As noted previously, it is likely that all of the cases of "Helminthosporium" and Drechslera infections reported in the literature were caused by Bipolaris or Exserohilum. Infections due to these 2 genera are probably more common than previously recognized. They should be included in the differential diagnosis of central nervous system and disseminated fungal disease, sinusitis, keratitis, peritonitis associated

Antimicrobial Activities of Ophiobolins from Bipolaris maydis against Foodborne Pathogenic Bacteria via Biofilm Formation Inhibition.

Bipolarizens A-O (1-15), 15 previously undescribed ophiobolin derivatives, and one known analog, 3-anhydroophiobolin A (16), were discovered from the fungus Bipolaris maydis. All of the compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic data, DP4+ analyses, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations, and X-ray crystallography studies. Compound 1 had a 15-oxatetracyclo[9.3.2.02,12.04,8]hexadecane-bridged system. Compound 2 featured a 5/8/5/7-tetracyclic sesterterpenoid framework, constituting only the second reported example of this structural class. Bioactivity research revealed that c

Genome-based mining of new antimicrobial meroterpenoids from the phytopathogenic fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana strain 11134.

Polyketide-terpenoid hybrid compounds are one of the largest families of meroterpenoids, with great potential for drug development for resistant pathogens. Genome sequence analysis of secondary metabolite gene clusters of a phytopathogenic fungus, Bipolaris sorokiniana 11134, revealed a type I polyketide gene cluster, consisting of highly reducing polyketide synthase, non-reducing polyketide synthase, and adjacent prenyltransferase. MS- and UV-guided isolations led to the isolation of ten meroterpenoids, including two new compounds: 19-dehydroxyl-3-epi-arthripenoid A (1) and 12-keto-cochlioqui

A small cysteine-rich fungal effector, BsCE66 is essential for the virulence of Bipolaris sorokiniana on wheat plants.

The Spot Blotch (SB) caused by hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana is one of the most devastating wheat diseases leading to 15-100% crop loss. However, the biology of Triticum-Bipolaris interactions and host immunity modulation by secreted effector proteins remain underexplored. Here, we identified a total of 692 secretory proteins including 186 predicted effectors encoded by B. sorokiniana genome. Gene Ontology categorization showed that these proteins belong to cellular, metabolic and signaling processes, and exhibit catalytic and binding activities. Further, we functionally

Bipolaris sorokiniana, a cereal pathogen of global concern: cytological and molecular approaches towards better controldouble dagger.

Summary Bipolaris sorokiniana (teleomorph Cochliobolus sativus) is the causal agent of common root rot, leaf spot disease, seedling blight, head blight, and black point of wheat and barley. The fungus is one of the most serious foliar disease constraints for both crops in warmer growing areas and causes significant yield losses. High temperature and high relative humidity favour the outbreak of the disease, in particular in South Asia's intensive 'irrigated wheat-rice' production systems. In this article, we review the taxonomy and worldwide distribution, as well as strategies to counteract th
