PURPOSE: Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a rare, chronic, bilateral posterior uveitis uniquely associated with HLA-A29. Despite this genetic linkage, the immune mechanisms driving BSCR remain poorly defined. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize evidence on immune mediators in BSCR and their potential as biomarkers or therapeutic targets.
METHODS: Canada a systematic search of OVID MEDLINE, PubMed and Embase databases was performed on August 1, 2024 following PRISMA guidelines. Eligible studies investigated cytokines, chemokines, and immune cell populations in BSCR. Non-English …

PURPOSE: Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR) is a bilateral, chronic uveitis primarily involving the posterior segment that often results in progressive vision loss. Histopathology on eyes with BCR has been limited, but we had the rare opportunity to study the eyes of a donor with BCR. We sought to compare immunolabeling in the eyes of this donor who was treated with immunosuppression for over 30 years to age-matched controls.
METHODS: From each eye, a macular punch and superotemporal regions were used for cryostat sectioning, and immunohistochemistry was performed on the sections using antibodi…

Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a type of chronic posterior uveitis with limited characterization of extraocular manifestations, including headache. We describe two HLA-A29-positive patients with BSCR who developed refractory unilateral periorbital headaches temporally associated with visual symptom onset. Headaches lateralized to the more affected eye and the patients exhibited migrainous and prominent cranial autonomic features resembling trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs) and variable responses to standard headache therapies. Together, this supports the International Classificati…

INTRODUCTION: Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR) is a chronic, bilateral posterior uveitis characterized by yellow-white fundus lesions and a strong association with HLA-A29. Visual decline, often due to cystoid macular edema (CME) and retinal atrophy, necessitates early immunomodulatory therapy. This case report describes the clinical course of BCR and highlights the role of intravitreal corticosteroids in managing inflammation and CME.
CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old previously healthy male diagnosed with BCR based on clinical findings and a positive HLA-A29 test presented with refractory CME. Ove…

Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a presumed autoimmune disease of the eye affecting mostly middle-aged women and typically associated with the HLA-A29 genetic haplotype. Presenting symptoms include blurred vision, nyctalopia, and floaters. Classic fundus findings are multiple, bilateral, creamy, oval lesions around the optic nerve, mostly nasal and inferior to the disc. Fluorescein/indocyanine angiography, optical coherence topography, and fundus autofluorescence can be used for diagnosis and disease monitoring. Here, we present a case of a patient with giant cell arteritis (GCA) on tocili…
