Birth order and health disparities throughout the life course.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown ample evidence of how birth order affects health; however, these studies focus on specific health outcomes and ages. OBJECTIVE: We provide a comprehensive picture of the effects of birth order on health disparities over the life course. METHOD: We study the effects of birth order from birth to age 70 on hospitalizations, visits to open care facilities and mortality using Swedish register data from 1987 to 2016. We identify the effects by comparing siblings within the same family. RESULTS: We find that firstborns have worse health at birth. In adolescence, the

Birth order, atopy, and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Immune deficiency is a strong risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but whether or not other forms of immune dysregulation are associated with NHL risk is unknown. We investigated associations between atopy, which is associated with a Th2-dominant immune response, and NHL risk. Because late birth order and childhood crowding are inversely associated with atopy, we also investigated their associations with NHL risk. METHODS: We carried out a population-based case-control study among adults aged 20-74 years in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. NH

Respiratory distress syndrome and birth order in premature twins.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of birth order on respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in the outcome of twins in a large premature population managed in a modern neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: An historical cohort study design was used to analyse the neonatal outcomes of 301 premature liveborn twin sibling pairs of between 23 and 31 weeks gestation from the Australia and New Zealand Neonatal Network 1995 database. RESULTS: Among the 56 twin sibling pairs who were discordant for RDS, the second twin was affected in 41 cases (odds ratio (OR) 2.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5 to

Delivery mode, birth order, and sex impact neonatal microbial colonization.

The initial microbial colonization of the infant gut during birth plays a critical role in shaping both immediate and long-term health outcomes. While mode of delivery is a known determinant of this colonization process, the potential impacts of infant sex and birth order remain underexplored. This study investigates the influence of delivery mode, infant sex, and birth order (maternal parity) on the microbial communities in first-pass meconium samples from neonates, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We found that delivery mode impacted the presence of detectable microbial communities. Specifica

Siblings, shopping, and sustainability: Birth-order differences in green consumption.

Several studies have examined the role of birth order in shaping human personality, but fewer have tested this variable in relation to other pressing issues. We conducted a birth-order study on green consumption, which enabled us to detect a small-to-moderate effect size equivalent to r = 0.15 or d = 0.30 with sufficient statistical power (N = 335). To capture green consumption, participants indicated their tendency to express the value of environmental protection through purchases and consumption behaviors. Firstborns (vs. laterborns) consistently expressed lower concerns linked to environmen

Does antenatal ultrasound labeling predict birth order in twin pregnancies?

OBJECTIVE: It is often assumed by obstetricians, neonatologists and parents that the prenatal nomenclature used to identify twins on ultrasound is consistent with twin labeling after their birth. The aim of this study was to use a large regional database of twin ultrasound scans to validate the effectiveness of a scan before delivery in predicting twin birth-order. METHODS: A large regional database of twin ultrasound scans with data from nine hospitals over a 10-year period was used to identify all ultrasound examinations carried out just before birth. The discordance in twin order between t

Correlation between prenatal and neonatal birth order in twin pregnancy.

Little data is available correlating the in utero order of presentation and the birth order of twins. Our objective was to determine whether birth order in twin pregnancies corresponds to the order of presentation early in pregnancy. All twin pregnancies in which amniocentesis was performed from 1996 to 1998 were identified. Those with discordant genders that delivered at our hospital were included. Order of presentation was documented by ultrasound at the time of amniocentesis. Delivery data were obtained from review of medical records. Statistical comparison was done using two-tailed Fisher'

Birth order and sickness absence: Register-based evidence from Finland.

BACKGROUND: In working ages, sickness absence is strongly related to persons' health condition. We studied how birth order was associated with receipt of sickness allowance, distinguishing between mental disorders, musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. METHODS: A follow-up study based on the entire Finnish population was conducted for sibling groups born 1969-1982, in which each sibling was observed from age 35 years in the period 2004-2018. Focus was on within-family variation in first-time sickness allowance receipt. RESULTS: Results of stratified Cox regressions revealed that each incre

Birth Order and Injury-Related Infant Mortality in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of death during the first year of life due to injury, such as unintentional injury and homicide, by birth order in the U.S. METHODS: Using national birth cohort-linked birth-infant death data (births, 2000-2010; deaths, 2000-2011), risks of infant mortality due to injury in second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth or later-born singleton infants were compared with first-born singleton infants. Risk ratios were estimated using log-binomial models adjusted for maternal age, marital status, race/ethnicity, and education. The statistical

BIRTH ORDER AND ANDROPHILIC MALE-TO-FEMALE TRANSSEXUALISM IN BRAZIL.

Previous research has indicated that biological older brothers increase the odds of androphilia in males. This finding has been termed the fraternal birth order effect. The maternal immune hypothesis suggests that this effect reflects the progressive immunization of some mothers to male-specific antigens involved in fetal male brain masculinization. Exposure to these antigens, as a result of carrying earlier-born sons, is hypothesized to produce maternal immune responses towards later-born sons, thus leading to female-typical neural development of brain regions underlying sexual orientation. Birth order of patients with DSM-III-R somatization disorder.

A sample of 143 patients, 76 meeting strict DSM-III-R criteria for somatization disorder and 67 somatizers, was studied using Slater's index to measure birth order position. The results showed that birth order position was not associated with the diagnosis of somatization disorder and that sibship position in both groups occurred by chance. Thus, although environmental factors may influence the development of somatization disorder, the expression of environmental influence through birth order is unlikely.

Perinatal mortality in second- vs firstborn twins: a matter of birth size or birth order?

OBJECTIVE: Second-born twins on average weigh less than first-born twins and have been reported at an elevated risk of perinatal mortality. Whether the risk differences depend on their relative birth size is unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of birth order with perinatal mortality by birth order-specific weight difference in twin pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: In a retrospective cohort study of 258,800 twin pregnancies without reported congenital anomalies using the US matched multiple birth data 1995-2000 (the available largest multiple birth dataset), conditional logi

The Fraternal Birth Order Effect in the Royal House of Nineveh.

Based on evidence of the cuneiform documents and studies in prosopography of the Neo-Assyrian Empire of the seventh century BCE, it can be demonstrated that the last great king of the Sargonid dynasty, Assurbanipal (669-631 BCE), was the fourth son of his mother Ešarra-hammat. This information can be combined with later accounts in the Classical sources, in which the same Assyrian king, called Sardanapal(l)os in Greek, is depicted as effeminate and bisexual. The fact that the king Assurbanipal was the fourth son of his mother lends additional support to these later materials through the hypoth

Higher-order multiple births in Abakaliki, Southeast Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Higher-order multiple births have implications for perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine the incidence and outcomes of higher-order multiple pregnancies in a rural area in Southeast Nigeria. METHODS: The study reviewed the data on all higher-order multiple deliveries conducted in two tertiary health institutions in Abakaliki over a seven-year period from January 2000 to December 2006. RESULTS: Higher-order multiple births constituted 0.13 percent of the 16,968 deliveries at the two institutions. There were 21 triplet births and one quadru

Birth order and ratio of brothers to sisters in Spanish transsexuals.

Three Western studies have shown that male-to-female (MF) homosexual transsexuals tend to be born later than their siblings and to come from sibships with more brothers than sisters. The objective of this study was to determine whether these variables would be replicated in 530 MF and female-to-male (FM) Spanish transsexuals according to sexual orientation. The results showed that MF homosexual transsexuals had significantly more older brothers than the non-homosexual MF group. Compared with the expected rates in the general population, birth order was significantly higher in both MF (Slater's
